Hi all,
unless I'm overseeing some developments, the big prizes for the European competition are not going extremely well. There is the prize offered by Europeana of course (and the 12 calendars!), but aside from that it is still a bit empty unfortunately. In the European budget, we reserved 1500 euro for a European prize, and analogue to the Indonesian writing contest, the idea has been with several people to spend that on a "scholarship" for the winner to visit Wikimania.
Also, there is one special prize for video (from Sound & Vision), and one special prize for Art Nouveau (from Europeana). See also http://www.wikilovesmonuments.eu/awards/ .
Am I missing anything? Would there be huge objections to the scholarship idea as a first prize?

A scholarship for Wikimania would be a great idea if the contest was aimed at Wikimedians specifically... Which is not the case, as far as I know...
If the winner of the contest is not a Wikimedian, what would be the point in sending him (or her) to a 3-days conference about topics he doesn't care ?

Hi Sylvain,
no matter what the prize is, there will be people who like it more than others. You are of course right that our target audience is broader than just regular Wikimedians. The idea of the scholarship is that the winner can "present" the winning photo at Wikimania, and of course besides that it is a nice trip to Washington. Advantage is that Washington is relatively speaking just as far for any country in Europe. And similarly expensive.
To be clear, we're talking about a full scholarship, including travel, conference fee and stay.
Also, if the first prize winner really doesn't like it, he can choose between the offered prizes, the second winner gets second choice etc. It would be really great if we get a few more prizes to choose from so that everybody gets something they really like.
Best,
Lodewijk

I tend to agree with Sylvain, a scholarship would be good for a hardcore Wikimedian (even most Wikimedians don't seem to care about Wikimania). But it could be given as a choice between that and another prize, perhaps.

For non-wikipedians you can see it as a 3 day vacation to washington DC, where you only have to go to the conference once to tell something about the picture.
Still a very nice price I would say then.

Wow, wow, wow...hold on guys :) You're not seriously considering forcing the winner to present his picture at Wikimania, are you? This is supposed to be a prize, not a task.
If we market this as a "three day vacation to DC with the possibility to take part in Wikimania" it would be OK I guess, but we should not force the winner to go to the conference for whatever reason.

That was just my interpretation of 'the idea was to present the winning foto at wikimania'.

"present" should in this context not be read as "give a presentation" ;-) I could imagine though that we print the winning photos and "present" it that way to the audience.

Glad we clarified this :) I'm personally in favor of this prize, as long as we market it as a vacation. However, you should consider that the citizens in some of the participating countries - including Romania - need a visa for entering the US. This might discourage them from participating.

Or additionally encourage them if they'd like to visit Washington or the USA and we can offer them some help with the visa that they couldn't get in any other way (a good chance to test the visa organization of the WM2012 team :-p).

Hi!
In my opinion, a prize that you can't enjoy until almost a year later, it's not a good prize. I'm agree with Strainu too. I think that we would have to do a brainstorming of possible European first prize.

Hi everyone,
Lodewijk and I noted the objections to having a full scholarship to Wikimania 2012 as the main European prize, but nobody came up with a reasonable alternative and we ran out of time. So we decided to go through with this and include it at http://www.wikilovesmonuments.eu/awards/ . We'll do a separate blog post about this and will include it in our communication. I would suggest to include it in your local communication too.
This week we're going to start with Wiki Loves Monuments. This week your communication should go out to whomever you know: Press releases, twitter, facebook, etc etc. Saturday the site notice will be enabled. Let the world know what cool project we're doing!
