Dear all,
If there is sufficient interest from the community, I will propose a workshop on the WLM participants' survey and the insights we can gather from it. I think it is important that as many people involved in the organization of WLM 2012 and WLM 2013 as possible take part in the workshop, so we can get some collective sense making going.
So please sign up on the proposal page if you are interested: https://wikimania2014.wikimedia.org/wiki/Submissions/What_can_we_learn_from_...
It would certainly also be possible to present the results from the organizers' survey during the same workshop (possibly asking for a bit more time). Please let me know if that would be an option.
Concerning the participants' survey in 2014, we discussed with John Andersson about having one survey for all photo contests during this year. Please let me know what you think. - Whether a participants' survey will be carried out this year at all, will probably also depend on the interest among WLM organizers. It's a lot of work; so I would suggest doing it only if there is a concrete demand for it. Any feedback is appreciated.
Kind regards, Beat

Hi Beat,
sorry for the delay in responding again.
I think using the same questions makes a lot of sense. That way the different surveys become comparable. It would be extra double smart, if you checked the questions for validity and stupid mistakes the first time, so they can be avoided in the other surveys too :)
However, for practical reasons I don't think a /single survey/ would be feasable.
Best, Lodewijk

Dear Lodewijk, dear all,
I've updated the questionnaire: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Monuments_2014/Partici...
I think it would be possible to adapt it in a way to make exactly the same version fit both WLM and WLE (I could take care of this, if needed). The alternative, of course, would be to produce a WLM and a WLE version (this can easily be done on the basis of the updated version provided).
Known issues:
- There is a translation mistake in Russian for the word "username"
- For some languages we only had partial translations last year (or none at all); we would also need to check which languages would need to be added due to new countries participating in the contest
Next steps:
- We need someone to take care of the technical issues (setting up the survey tool, preparing the questionnaire for translation, exporting/importing the questionnaire for translation, sending out the invitation messages, export the data, including the coordination of these steps) as well as of the coordination of the translation work (Realistically, we need to know this person by the end of next week if we want to run the survey twice, once for WLE and once for WLM)
- Make the timeline for 2014 (this can be done based on the 2013 timeline: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Monuments_2013/Partici...)
I'm happy to give support and advice where I am able to do so; for the rest, I will focus on the analysis of the 2013 survey data.
Cheers, Beat

Hello Beat, I just found this proposal while reviewing old unread mail, and seems very interesting.
This would basically simply need the variables {{contest}}, {{year}}, {{previous year}}, {{previous month}}, {{coordinating team}} and {{team signature}}, plus the country list and run the same survey on any contest. The cool thing is that we could perform a blind replacement on the translations we currently have and it _should_ work.
This kind of usage assumes that on all languages the contest name will appear on the same part of the phrase (which is probably the case) and won't be differences like WLM and WLE having different genders.
Regards
PS: For the countries you added, we would need the languages: Portuguese, Khmer, Kurdish?, Greek, Latvian, Macedonian, Malagasy?
Hi Platonides,
Yes, it should work by doing a replacement on a few string variables.
There are two questions that are a bit tricky: - The one listing all the previous contests (this one would need to be updated after each contest that has taken place - not a huge problem) - The one asking when the pictures were mainly taken (here, the items need to be adapted from year to year as well as specifically with regard to the date of the contest)
Another issue is that we didn't have full translations available for all needed languages. So we would need to run another translation sprint for the missing languages.
If you are taking care of the technical stuff, I can review the questionnaire once you have set it up with the changing variables, and I can try to establish a list of the languages that still would need translation.
Cheers, Beat

I hear Ter-burg is interested in the survey, as well as in providing survey respondents who asked for it an occasion to be re-contacted, namely "GLAMout Global". You should hear from him soon. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:GLAM/GLAMout/2014/October

Hi Nemo,
The basic analyses from the past two surveys can be found here: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Monuments_2013/Partici...
Along with most of the data, by the way (except for data that would be problematic from a data protection perspective).
I presently don't have the time to run further analyses on these data (e.g. country comparisons) and to write a proper report on this; let alone to compare the results to data from server statistics. Therefore, I would be very glad if someone else could jump in. By the way, we thought we had found someone at Wikimania in London who would continue the work on a volunteer basis, but he has jumped off again as he has found a new job. There is a proposed analysis plan, and Jaime from the WMF Evaluation team and I are happy to provide guidance if needed. So, if anyone is interested, please let me know! (maybe it could be coupled with an individual engagement grant)
My feeling so far has been that there is only punctual interest from the side of WLM/WLE organizers in this survey; and as far as I know there haven't been any attempts to actually have a budget for the evaluation of the contests at the international level in order to set the evaluation and learning process up in a sustainable manner. This is certainly also due to the ad-hoc / last-minute culture when it comes to WLM at the international level. - So, I'm looking forward to hearing from Sebastiaan and his thoughts about this.
Regarding the Wikimania workshop on the WLM participants' survey: it was accepted with a score of 9 out of 10, but it was allocated only 30 minutes instead of 70 minutes by the organizing team. The same happened with my other two workshop proposals which had scored slightly higher. So I eventually dropped the WLM workshop and negotiated a time increase for one of the other sessions, so we could hold at least one proper workshop.
Cheers, Beat
