First congrats for the overall success of WLM 2012, and also for the awesome stats at http://toolserver.org/~emijrp/wlm/stats.php
Here are some extra stats about uploaders, with focus on new vs experienced contributors:
These data are provisional, while we vet input further (last chart seems to indicate there is still some anomaly), see at '==>'
This chart shows how the three WLM event lead to increasingly large peaks in new editors (on any project).
http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:WLM_uploaders_2010-2012_linear.png http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:WLM_uploaders_2010-2012_linear.png
Same chart with logarithmic y axis. This shows that numbers of old hands contributing to WLM is non-negligible.
http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:WLM_uploaders_2010-2012_log.png http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:WLM_uploaders_2010-2012_log.png
For completeness sake, similar linear and log charts where only WLM 2012 is taken into account.

Following bar chart shows experienced vs new uploaders to each WLM event.
http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:WLM_uploaders_2010-2012_bar_chart_cor rected.png
Last chart is similar as first chart, now with remaining Commons contributors to namespace 6 plotted as second line.
Surprisingly there is still a big leap in non WLM editors in Sep 2012
http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:WLM_uploaders_2010-2012_vs_other_NS6_ editors_linear.png
==> (hmmm, seems too coincidental, are we missing WML participants ?, in other words should some users still move from red to blue line ?)
Also updated is monthly Wikistats report:
http://stats.wikimedia.org/wikispecial/EN/TablesWikipediaCOMMONS.htm
Note that there was no time after closure of month to produce and process full archive dump. That will happen in coming week, and overall article counts and too much lesser degree editor activity counts will drop a few percent, but it should not affect uploader counts. (reason: for stub dump we cannot apply all official criteria for proper articles, as page content is not available: no check for internal or category link).
Also noteworthy: you can see which people are most active on the mailing list: http://www.infodisiac.com/Wikipedia/ScanMail/WikiLovesMonuments.html

Some more details:
Each year I get a list of user names of people who contribute to WLM.
In 2010 the list contained 201 names, in 2011 there were 5462 names and this year 14994.
That is 25 less than the 15019 mentioned on http://toolserver.org/~emijrp/wlm/stats.php
I found edits for 14737 out of the list of 14994 that was provided, that may need further scrutiny (maybe some unicode names got mixed up)
Platonides:
If we restrict to valid submissions:
time sql commonswiki_p "SELECT DISTINCT user_name FROM
u_platonides_wlm_p.wlm2012 JOIN user ON (user_id=wlm_author) WHERE wlm_source = 'commons' AND wlm_status='Participating';" > wlmParticipatingUsernames.txt

FYI, thought you would find the stats below to be interesting.

Thanks a lot Erik! Just two remarks:
When looking only at WLM2012, that the WLM2011 participants were overrepresented. That means... these people returned! That says a lot about how they enjoyed the competition. http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:WLM_uploaders_2010-2012_log.png
One reason for differences in stats (peaks) might be people who's submissions got deleted. Would it be possible that deleted uploads are also counted in the red line Erik? (Those wouldn't be valid submissions according to Platonides' definition).
Thanks again, and I'm looking forward to more retention stats :)

Hi Erik,
Thanks for sharing that. I know tomasz plan to share also mobile upload stats that could be interesting...
Take into consideration that in Israel people still uploading photos until the 15th. It's not thousands of photos per day, but still can effect the finall number a little...

And also some (or a lot of) pictures could be deleted in the future due to different causes, like non freedom of panorama, copyvios, images that don't show a monument or show a monument from a country that doesn't participate, etc. I hope this figure will not be so high but we must delete and image or the wlm template when we find a case of these.

Great stats Erik, and I agree with Lodewijk that we seem to have lots of returnees! It is very puzzling about the increased activity of non-WLM uploaders. Of course there is a lot going on behind the scenes at Wiki Commons with categorization and id-checking and so on, but I feel that the vast majority of volunteers on Commons and other projects are also uploading photos themselves (like me).
It's just a thought, but I noticed that when I uploaded with my mobile phone, that my username was all in lowercase. I hope the usernames are not counted in a case-sensitive manner. Could this be a reason? Jane

In the list I gave, the usernames were normalized.
I just love these numbers!
I would like to use them for a blogposwt and a press release to emphasise the social end of WLM: it is about contributing and sharing.
Is it possible to get numbers worldwide and specifically for the Netherlands (for alle countries)?

Hi Els,
I think once we're a bit further in the month we can get some better (and more detailed) numbers, once Israel is finished, and we took care of some border scenarios which are still being considered (late submissions, some cases where it is unclear whether photos are valid monuments etc).
Best, Lodewijk

Hi Jane,
Thanks for your suggestion. Name in mediawiki and my script is case sensitive.
So I just checked how many names would collide if compared case insensitive.
Out of 475,318 names of users who contributed at namespace 6 at least once, 572 occurred more than once if counted case insensitive.
See http://tinyurl.com/9oxxwu6
The extra number of users is somewhere 2000+ such this seems not to be it.
I don't know your user name, but you can check for yourself if it occurs in above file.
Cheers,
Erik

But in the wlmParticipatingUsernames.txt file I provided, you appear as 'Jane023'. That's what I meant when I said it was normalised.
FTR, you have 358 files as 'Jane023' and 32 as 'jane023': - 343 were uploaded with the Upload Wizard, showing Jane023 for all of them. - 32 files uploaded with the android app show you as jane023 - 13 files uploaded with the android app show you as Jane023 There are a couple of them for which I don't have the tool used, which are the deleted photos of Mark di Suvero.
Jane,
Wikimedia turns first letter of name always to uppercase
You can see this when you look at http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/User:jane023 it redirects to http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/User:Jane023
This might be on presentation level, so I scanned for jane023 in dump file http://dumps.wikimedia.org/commonswiki/20121001/commonswiki-20121001-stub-ar ticles.xml.gz It only occurs in a few comments, all xml tags are <username>Jane023</username>
Platonides,
Out of curiosity, where did you find lowercase 'jane023' ? In a log file?

Erik Zachte
I parse the author field. If someone provides as author "Jane Darnell", I keep 'Jane Darnell' for display and the associated user id for identification.
In this case, jane023 came from either jane023 or User:jane023. I just grepped for the different names used in Jane uploads.
There are of course much more different entries, where you wouldn't associate the username to the real name. A common error was for users to upload, then change the username to their real name at both sides of the pipe, not only changing how it is shown but also the user at which it points to (in some cases pointing to a different user!).
Regards
Here [1] is a list of all Commons users who only edited namespace 6 in Sep 2012, who are not listed on the (provisional) list of WLM uploaders [2] or the slightly more permissive [3]. Links lead to list of contributions per user.
[1] http://tinyurl.com/8dacm5f [2] http://tinyurl.com/949bc8x [3] http://tinyurl.com/9kzft4m
I checked 36 top uploaders:
Monument related but not on [2] [3]:
1032 edits for Sreejithk2000_AWB http://tinyurl.com/8ehx77x (many in category 'WLM 2012 India unreviewed' ) 98 edits for Instandhouder http://tinyurl.com/97ze5p7 (category 'Rijksmonumenten') 88 edits for Marivancauteren http://tinyurl.com/8rl46b8 (category 'onroerend erfgoed with known id's / lots of 'monument' in file desc) 86 edits for Cpiro http://tinyurl.com/8phbs3p (category 'Monumento Histórico')
Several more in top 30 uploaded buildings, which could be related but also might not be, e.g.
98 edits for Maharajsaran http://tinyurl.com/9qfqwav (not categorized as monument, and perhaps not meant for WLM) 85 edits for MartinSilk http://tinyurl.com/9rjuamx (might be cemetery rather than WLM, although quite a few buildings) 88 for Andries Van den abeele http://tinyurl.com/95f7hck (streets rather than buildings)
Erik Zachte
Hmm, Interesting! Those edits by Marivancauteren definitely look like WLM uploads, but are made with the proper template for the whole category here http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Uilenspiegelmonument_%28Damme%29 Looks like a Wiki Commons savvy user who doesn't care about the contest. Reflecting on my own activities, I recall making some uploads that I consciously did not upload with the WLM uploader, because it was museum content that I felt was unrelated to the building's history (as opposed to museum content that I felt WAS related to a building's history).
WSC's points are a bit disconcerting - I certainly hope the spike in non-WLM uploads were just this sort of "related-but-not-WLM" or "Heritage-but-not-interested-in-contest" and not "frustrated-WLM-attempts". As for uploads from non-participating countries, I agree there could be possible future local organizers in that group, if they are not too frustrated by their upload attempts this year. Jane

Re Erik's point about the spike in non WLM contributors. I'm hoping this is largely a result of the publicity for WLM, If so it would be interesting to know:
Were these images that would have qualified for WLM if they'd been appropriately templated? If so we might have a problem with the process and a bunch of frustrated editors who tried to participate but had a problem.
Were these monuments from the 160 or so non-participating countries? If so we may have some people worth approaching who might be willing to help spread WLM to more countries next year.
Were these images that weren't monuments? I'm hoping that the publicity for WLM has prompted a lot of other photographers to load images to Commons, but on things that fit their interests. If so perhaps we should be thinking about other contests - for example a picture of every river, species and village,
Was thus a complete coincidence, based on unrelated publicity?
I don't have the tools to analyse this, but it should be possible to investigate this by looking at the categories that the images in the unexplained spike were loaded to.

Surprisingly there is still a big leap in non WLM editors in Sep 2012 ****
