Hi everyone,
I added the listed buildings in Scotland to the English Wikipedia, see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_listed_buildings_in_Scotland . Monuments database is also set up so we have 47663 new items. It's already visible on the map ( http://toolserver.org/~erfgoed/map/ ) and tomorrow the other tools (like the statistics at https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Monuments_2011/Monumen...) will be updated.
I hope to be adding Wales soon. England and Northern Ireland are a bigger challenge.

You got to love Wikipedia: The first local steps in, nominating lists for speedy deletion and moving them around to wrong names (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Contributions/Pencefn ) . I guess he didn't read https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_civil_parishes_in_Scotland . Did more people run into this kind of hostile behaviour when creating or converting lists at their Wikipedia?

Maarten, I sympathize! The short answer is yes. The main problem is proving the encyclopedic value of lists of monuments. In order to do this, you basically need to define "monument" at the local level. I guess an article on "cultural heritage in Scotland" would be appropriate, since "National Heritage Site (Scotland)" sounds a bit odd, since that can only be "National Heritage Site (UK)". How does the German Wikipedia do this? I noticed my "National Heritage Site" article on the en wiki has been nominated for merging with "List of heritage registers". Maybe there needs to be a "List of heritage registrars" as well, i.e. the list of registers can include world, country, province, parish/county lists, while the list of registrars are the bodies responsible for the unique identifiers. Somehow you need to protect against the "original research" argument for casual new page patrollers. They will not, as you complain, actually read the pages in text, but they will confirm any references given. See also Kilian's comments in another thread. We're using the terms used in the respective state laws. So we have Kulturdenkmale, Kulturdenkmäler, Baudenkmale, Baudenkmäler, depending on the region. There were some users who suggested using just one term, but that was dismissed in a poll, mainly because of the OR policy.
In general, it's hard for non-heritage-enthusiasts to understand and appreciate the diversity of terms and names in that field, but I think that by any means we should stick with the actual and official terms.
Best regards,
Kilian
Kilian, Thanks for your quick answer! I agree, and I think that you can only succeed if the terms are explained at the local level. So maybe "Listed Building (Scotland)" would be the best article to create here. I myself had trouble when I tried to create lists for Belgium and the term "Beschermd erfgoed" was considered inappropriate for anything in Wallonia because it is officially French.
