Dear all,
This is my first letter to the list as a new subscriber, so I hope it is within the scope of the conversations here.
We are organising a webinar for educators in Ukraine, and we were thinking of sharing examples we are aware of, when the photo contests we organise (Wiki Loves Monuments, Wiki Loves Earth, Wiki Loves Folklore etc) were used by educators in their education initiatives or Wikimedia education programme efforts.
For Wiki Loves Monuments in 2017 we had a special award for pupils of the Kyiv schools to take and upload pictures of the monuments -- there was a special page for pre-registration for them, so we would know to also evaluate their pictures separately. We organised 4 workshops for the interested pupils, explaining how to upload pictures, criteria etc. We had a separate awards ceremony for them, giving out souvenirs. As far as we know there were no great results coming out of this effort (some of the kids did try editing Wikipedia that same year, but if they have continued editing or participating, they did it under some new accounts), but it was certainly a very interesting experience for us as a team, trying to figure out how to explain rules of the contest to kids :)
We also have educators who know about our contests, and they build them into their curriculum as a separate activity, urging them to take and upload pictures. After the contest they usually request certificates of participation for their pupils, to keep their pupils motivated.
I found this story from Brazil when searching in the newsletter archive, and though it is not directly related to the WLX contests, it seems within the examples we are looking for: https://outreach.wikimedia.org/wiki/Education/News/September_2018/Education_...
There might be quite a lot of other potential activities around the contests we can think of (especially for Wiki Loves Folklore), but at this stage we were interested if anybody in the wider Movement has experience of doing or trying to do any of such activities, so we can collect information about the known international experience, and share it with our community. Thus, we would be grateful if you can share with us any examples of using our photo contest for Wikimedia education programmes / initiatives you are aware of (or tried to organise), especially for school education (as this is the focus for us at the moment).
Just in case, as this is the most recent thread here in the list, and we are talking about educational activities aimed at kids -- we are aware of the EduWiki Knowledge Showcase: Children and Wikimedia Projects https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uKceDmIxIh8, thank you for having that material available!
Thank you all, and please take care!
P.S. I have also asked about such examples at Wiki Loves Monuments mailing list, so if you are subscribed to both lists, you might find yourself reading it twice -- sorry about that!

Hello antanana,
At Wikimedistas de Uruguay we've run two contests that I think suit your description:
1- Click to the school: https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Event:Click_a_la_escuela -- We invited people to submit photos of their schools, after uploading the open dataset of all the Uruguayan schools into Wikidata. This happened near a few trainings we were doing with teachers so it was a good opportunity for them to try. We got some quite amazing pictures.
2- Foto.Física: https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Event:Foto.F%C3%ADsica_2024 -- In this case, the Society of Physics of Uruguay has been running this contest for quite a while now (I think over 10 years) and this year we co-organized the contest using Wikimedia Commons as the platform. They were a few things that we could have worked better (for example, the category system), but overall it was an interesting experiment.
Happy to talk more about them if you're interested.
cheers,
Hello antanana,
It's a pleasure to get in touch with you! From Wikimedia Argentina, in recent years, we didn't organize photo contests specifically for teachers, but we do carry out an activity with images, which may be of your interest.
In the framework of the virtual course “Teaching with Wikipedia”, for teachers of the Province of Río Negro, we proposed as an activity the release of images of their city or town, in order to illustrate Wikipedia articles in Spanish. We carried out this experience four times, with very good results. I share with you the links to the dashboard, so you can check it out.
