Hi all, I have an unconventional question today :)
Wikimedia Ukraine was approached by the Ukrainian Institute, a recently formed governmental organisation aimed at promoting Ukraine abroad. They are willing to support creating Wikipedia articles in other languages about Ukrainian culture. As of now, they have little resources on their own, and are gathering information.
The question arose: Are there any educators outside Ukraine who are doing or planning to do Wikipedia Education Program in topics, connected to our country? And who are they?
Since this question never came to me, I have no idea :) But if you know something, do tell! I'll be very grateful.
Thank you! and have a nice day,

Hi Vira, your question is not at all unusual. If you just want to know about courses, you can always google some variation of "courses Ukrainian" or "Ukrainian studies programs", so your question is probably broader than that. Every organization is interested in promotion, but the mission of Wikipedia is educational, so unless someone understands how Wikipedia works, their material could be quickly deleted, which can be very frustrating for newcomers. The best bet might be to contact the local Wikimedia volunteer organizations. The local Wikimedia organization can show you how to edit, what kinds of materials can be included, and how to deal with any conflict-of-interest issues.
The other question is how to identify knowledge gaps in Wikipedia. There are some tools available, one is called "Not in the other language" for translating between different language wikis (1) or you may find others in the tool directory. (2) English Wikipedia has a category for "Articles needing translation from Ukrainian Wikipedia"; there may be something on the list that needs attention. (7) You may also find subject experts. Museums, archives, and libraries often have special collections or documents they would like to make more public, or publications they will let you use for sources during a meetup. Other institutions like churches or unions sometimes have archives for source material or photos they can upload for use in Wikipedia articles. Again, the local Wikimedia volunteer group in that city or country can help with understanding copyright issues to see which items can be used.
I volunteer with the Wikimedia DC group (3) in the Washington area, where there is also a Ukrainian embassy. We have had events with embassies, museums, libraries, and many others. You can see the most recent meetups here. (4) For an idea about international activity, there is also an international GLAM ("galleries, libraries, archives, museums") newsletter. (5) There is also a general meetup page, with links to many languages. (6)
There will also be a lot of special events in March for International Women's Month, and most are open to the public. So if someone is interested in science or art or whatever, they might just go to their local event and add some information about notable Ukrainian women artists or scientists.
I notice there is a "Ukrainian Institute" in New York. If this is the same organization, they may want to contact Wikimedia NYC, which has a very active organization. (8)
Best, "Avery"
