Hi all,
I'd like to point out a discussion I've just started on Wikiversity asking if they are using this project as part of the Wikipedia ambassadors program
http://en.wikiversity.org/wiki/Wikiversity:Colloquium#Wikiversity_and_Wikipe...
and ask you if you know of any other Wikimedia Foundation project, beyond Wikipedia, involved in the Ambassadors program. If some case you know to tell us is not in English or some Romanic language, I'd like to read your experience about it.
Also, a short comment bellow about a point of Juan's nice description (thanks!) about Czech Republic situation of its educational sector.
2011/12/19 Juan de Vojníkov juandevojnikov@gmail.com:
Other "problems" comes when newbies coming to the Czech Wikipedia. There is a luck of mentors for them and they have to face both technical (wikisyntax, templates, standards) and social problems (unpleasant users, lack of social interaction, just templates on their discussion page). Thus we have agreed to focus on setting up some features from en.wp such gadget Cite[2] or Wikilove. At this time User:Vojtech.dostal comes up with the information that Wikimedia Foundation's (WMF) developers is close to WYSIWYG editor for Wikipedia, but user Chmee2 is afraid that most of the good tools from WMF might be reject by the local community.
What about using Wikiversity in Czech http://cs.wikiversity.org/ for these social problems you mention? I've seen similar comments on Wikiversity to be more hospitable than Wikipedia (see, for instance, the last note in blue here http://diigo.com/0lzhd), from volunteers of both English and Portuguese languages projects.
Best wishes,
Tom

Wikimedia Commons has been significantly involved in the Ambassadors program, in a couple of courses focused on the creation of videos and diagrams:

I'm an educator and tried to get involved with Wikiversity, but almost anything I looked at in my home area was complete but chronically sub-standard, focused away from the needs of my students, and it was not in any way clear how I could contribute or what was acceptable or unacceptable. In the end I simply gave up - there are others doing the same sort of thing much better (eg WikiEducator). I've heard similar stories from many other educators across a range of fields.
kindest regards Andrew (Perth, Australia)

I havent't thought about WikiEducator, that's a good idea to analyse, thanks to remeber! I'll see if we have a community there in Portuguese as well.
My impression: Wikiversity -> too horizontal. WikiEducator -> the tradiciontal hierarchy. Besides that, it seems [[user:solstag]] has been using pt.wikiversity succefully on a course on cultural centers and universities here in Brazil.
At least in Brazil, if you let students on a place where they can do anything, they will do nothing. For instance, at wiki.stoa.usp.br, a wiki platform, integrated with Moodle and Elgg, for the University of São Paulo community, was succefully used by a professor of the school of communication and arts. Students just did what the professor said they to do and they had very specific tasks.
Thanks,
Tom

As a random aside, my university probably has one of the biggest footprints on Wikiversity. Our page can be found at http://en.wikiversity.org/wiki/University_of_Canberra . They've had several classes using the project, have over 7 staff members using in, and have been using it to organise a wiki conference in Australia: http://en.wikiversity.org/wiki/University_of_Canberra/RCC2012 . The latter is hosted on campus at our university and last year's conference attracted a number of academics. We couldn't host it on the RecentChangesCamp wiki on its own domain because of issues during the conference regarding wiki open ness, down time, etc. The people doing the tech for it were in the USA. :( I think the word my university has been doing has been pretty fantastic. :) Leigh Blackall has helped make it a success.
