For anyone interested, we also incorporated Citoid into the Wikipedia:Tutorial page: https://cs.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedie:Pr%C5%AFvodce (and yes, the Czech tutorial now almost completely deals with VisualEditor, except for discussion page guidelines where VE is not enabled).
Does anyone know if there are GuidedTours using VisualEditor? That would be lovely. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help:Guided_tours) thanks

Yep, Leigh, woohoo indeed. :)
Whatamidoing (WMF) confirms that citoid is configured on es.wiki. [1]
Thanks, Pine and Vojtěch.
Happy referencing, everyone. :)

I just tried this on ESWP. With VisualEditor enabled, it does work.

Is this true in all languages? es.wiki until now at least has not been able to process doi or pmid script references.

A little good news for GLAM and education folks:
"VisualEditor will now automatically create a link when you type in or paste an ISBN https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_Standard_Book_Number, PMID https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PMID, or RFC https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Request_for_Comments#Production_and_evolution.
