Hello Ziko,
Thank your for your feedback on Klexikon, how does it go there?
On what we saw on Vikidia, we can do both, provide quality content for children, and be a learning platform. Actually, be a learning platform is a way to provide quality content for children. On French-speaking Vikidia, most of the best contributors we have today were children when they started, and I can confirm they sometimes were hard to manage. But it was definitly worth it. Also, children write on different subjects than adults, especially for trendy subjects for children that we would have forgotten. Last thing to add, in a wiki way, every article is corrected by experienced contributors and thus we keep a quality content.

Hello,
Of course, now I have to join the conversation promoting "our" concept for a wiki for children. :-) The Klexikon might have a different approach than a wiki that tries to involve children as authors. We tried to have children as authors, but it seemed that we did not have the means to accompany them in a useful way. And there are general issues with having children working on the same platform as the adults, as it has been pointed out before. It is a fundamental choice: do you want to create a wiki that provides quality content for children, or do you want to have a learning platform for children.
Kind regards Ziko

Hello Plyd, This concerns has been debated with the legal team at the WMF and are unfounded. First of all, now we have underage editors on Wikipedia, and their data is safe: you don't need to give your e-mail to make an account and even if you give it, you CAN'T have an e-mail account on most
platforms
if you are under 13 years old. Children with an e-mail account MUST have their parents supervision or a family account, so in the very remote case that someone writes you a message from Wikipedia, it should be handled by their family.
On the other hand, children and adults are also mixed now on Vikidia. Basque Vikidia was written only by adults, for example. Now, with Txikipedia, adults and children are writting it together with zero problems, and lot of confidence.
You also mention that there are legal concerns for contributing to a wiki if you are under 13 years old... well, as far as we know, and the legal team has said... there aren't. As we are not asking for personal data to contribute to Wikimedia, we have now people under 13 years old contributing, and it will continue happening as long as we don't forbid
it
asking for birth data certificates.
The problem arises in the first sentence of this e-mail: "Most of you
must
know Vikidia,". Well, most of us maybe (and not very sure of that) but
most
of the readers definitively not. Wikipedia is the most consulted Encyclopedia by children, so we have to face how to give this children content suitable for them, because "Imagine a world in which every single human being can freely share in the sum of all knowledge." Bolds are
mine,
cursives not. Children are also human, and our goal is giving knowledge
to
every human, so we must provide knowledge to children.
I defend abundancy. Having Vikidia and Txikipedia is better than having only Vikidia or Txikipedia and is definitively better than anything. But
we
can start thinking out of the box. Basque Vikidia wasn't a known project, even by educators; Txikipedia is. We had more than 59.000 visits last
year
to Txikipedia articles, and this is a lot for a minority language. Txikipedia main page is every day one of the ten most visited pages in Basque. And we are just starting. We can imagine a future where we
provide
knowledge for different ages and abilities within the same platform. We
are
doing it, and you can also do it.
thanks
Galder

Hello Galder,
Txikipedia tab way may work on small communities, but it poses several problems to larger communities, where children contributors are melted
with
adults from wikipedia and not taken care of properly, and they don't feel like it's "their wiki". Also, Txikipedia tab lacks children protection
(for
example you can send a private email to a child on Txikipedia...).
Finally
there are legal concerns about children <13y-old contributions on a US-based wiki without their explicit parent authorization (USA have a
very
specific way of handling it). I think a better way of handling it would be to integrate better Vikidia and Wikipedia, but keeping them separated. Nothing prevents adding a tab
on
Vikidia and Wikipedia neither going further. I think the question is similar to integrate Wiktionary on Wikipedia. Also, we are working to improve the design of Vikidia. Txikipedia have shown us that we can do something really handsome :)

Basque Wikipedia has a better (as statistics show) approach to this with Txikipedia (https://eu.wikipedia.org/wiki/Txikipedia:Azala), creating articles INSIDE Wikipedia. Children now can read the full article or the children version of the article.
I would suggest other languages to have this tab system, the results are great!

Dear Education community,
Most of you must know Vikidia, the children encyclopedia since we
sometimes
send messages here (in a few words, it works like Wikipedia, but with a
few
adaptations to be suitable for children).
The 8-13 y-old encyclopedia grows fast in French, Spanish and Italian, a bit less in English with the competition of simple. We regularly open new languages when we have a group of contributors motivated.
Currently we have a group in Japanese and Portuguese. Do you have
contacts
of persons interested for the start? or contacts who may know future contributors?
Great thanks for any tip
