Fellow Wikimedians,
Wiki Education (the organization that runs the education program in the US
and Canada) has been working on a campaign to improve Wikipedia's coverage
of climate finance topics. As part of this campaign, we want to create
articles on climate finance around the world. Climate finance encompasses
investments to address climate change mitigation and adaptation. These
investments are desperately needed globally, but financial flows to the
developing world, and African countries in particular, have fallen short of
what is needed. But documentation is difficult to find for the average
reader, and difficult to interpret.
That's where you come in! If you're already convinced to help us, sign up
here:

Please join us for a free virtual four-week Wiki Scholars course focused on
improving the article on climate finance in your home country. Our goal is
to fill gaps in Wikipedia's coverage by creating "Climate finance by
[country]" to document financial flows related to climate change mitigation
and adaptation for as many countries as possible, especially in the
developing world. Led by longtime English Wikipedian Ian Ramjohn, the
course will focus on:
- Just what is climate finance, and why it is an important piece in the
climate crisis puzzle
- Where to find sources on climate finance in your country
- How to create an article on English Wikipedia, including tips and
tricks on English Wikipedia policies
- Using the content translation tool to create it in another language
Wikipedia that you speak
The course will meet via Zoom on Tuesdays and Thursdays @ 14:00 UTC, from
June 24 to July 19, 2024.
If you join us, you'll receive:
- Guidance from an English Wikipedia expert (Ian's an admin who's been
editing for 20 years!)
- Getting to know a cohort of other Wikimedians around the world who
care about how the climate crisis affects their country
- A certificate of completion that can be added to your LinkedIn profile

-The Wiki Education team
Dear all,
This is my first letter to the list as a new subscriber, so I hope it is
within the scope of the conversations here.
We are organising a webinar for educators in Ukraine, and we were thinking
of sharing examples we are aware of, when the photo contests we organise
(Wiki Loves Monuments, Wiki Loves Earth, Wiki Loves Folklore etc) were used
by educators in their education initiatives or Wikimedia education
programme efforts.
For Wiki Loves Monuments in 2017 we had a special award for pupils of the
Kyiv schools to take and upload pictures of the monuments -- there was a
special page for pre-registration for them, so we would know to also
evaluate their pictures separately. We organised 4 workshops for the
interested pupils, explaining how to upload pictures, criteria etc. We had
a separate awards ceremony for them, giving out souvenirs. As far as we
know there were no great results coming out of this effort (some of the
kids did try editing Wikipedia that same year, but if they have continued
editing or participating, they did it under some new accounts), but it was
certainly a very interesting experience for us as a team, trying to figure
out how to explain rules of the contest to kids :)
We also have educators who know about our contests, and they build them
into their curriculum as a separate activity, urging them to take and
upload pictures. After the contest they usually request certificates of
participation for their pupils, to keep their pupils motivated.
I found this story from Brazil when searching in the newsletter archive,
and though it is not directly related to the WLX contests, it seems within
the examples we are looking for:
https://outreach.wikimedia.org/wiki/Education/News/September_2018/Education…
There might be quite a lot of other potential activities around the
contests we can think of (especially for Wiki Loves Folklore), but at this
stage we were interested if anybody in the wider Movement has experience of
doing or trying to do any of such activities, so we can collect information
about the known international experience, and share it with our community.
Thus, we would be grateful if you can share with us any examples of using
our photo contest for Wikimedia education programmes / initiatives you are
aware of (or tried to organise), especially for school education (as this
is the focus for us at the moment).
Just in case, as this is the most recent thread here in the list, and we
are talking about educational activities aimed at kids -- we are aware of
the EduWiki Knowledge Showcase: Children and Wikimedia Projects
<https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uKceDmIxIh8>, thank you for having that
material available!
Thank you all, and please take care!
P.S. I have also asked about such examples at Wiki Loves Monuments mailing
list, so if you are subscribed to both lists, you might find yourself
reading it twice -- sorry about that!
З повагою / Best regards,
antanana

Call for Survey Participants - Wikimedia-Engaged Academic Researchers and Scientists
Survey Link: https://iup.co1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_0wfRHBdZmtbEuW2
Despite the growing interest in open educational resources in higher education, relatively few academics and scientists have significantly committed to sharing their research expertise in open knowledge projects. In fact, they often face opportunity costs when engaging with platforms like Wikipedia, as the time spent contributing can detract from more traditional scholarly outputs, such as peer-reviewed publications, conferences, and pursuing grants. This research project invites Wikimedia-engaged academics, scientists, and researchers to help us better understand how to make Wikimedia contributions “count” for academic researchers.
To that end, we'll be surveying and interviewing academic researchers and scientists who have previously engaged Wikimedia projects in an effort to discover the most suitable metrics and models for our project, as well as to develop a broad network of like-minded individuals interested in discovering how Wikimedia provides a platform for a broad open science infrastructure.
Taking the survey will take approximately 10 minutes of your time. If you agree to participate in an interview as part of the survey, this will be conducted via Zoom and take approximately 30-45 minutes of your time.
