Hello everyone!
I was just discussing with Obialugaeriaku Ezeilo <oby.ezeilo(a)gmail.com>
regarding the classroom use of Wikiversity and Wikibooks. We agreed on the
fact that these two projects have a huge potential for classroom use but
there are also a lot of questions.
Wikipedia has references to fact-check every information before using. We
can also evaluate whether an article is rich enough to be used or not using
different criteria.
Our question is can we use these two projects in the classrooms? What are
the pros and cons? Is anyone doing this already? How is their experience?
Kind regards
Rafi
Dear Md Nahid,

tl;dr: Looking for a way to engage secondary school teachers with
Wikipedia? Become a certified trainer of the Reading Wikipedia in the
Classroom program! Apply from Jan. 31 - Feb. 20. Information session coming
up on February 11, 2022 at 13:00 UTC
Hola everybody!
The Education team at the Wikimedia Foundation is happy to announce that
applications are open for the second cohort of the Training of Trainers
(ToT) program for “Reading Wikipedia in the Classroom”! This call is open
for Wikimedians, educators, and members of mission-aligned organizations
who believe in the value of Wikipedia to advance key 21st century skills
[1] and who are interested in implementing the “Reading Wikipedia in the
Classroom” program in their countries.
Reading Wikipedia in the Classroom[2] is a professional development program
for secondary school teachers that aligns a critical approach to Wikipedia
with UNESCO’s Media and Information Literacy framework. You can read more
details about the impact of the pilot experience in our report [3]. The
educational resources created for the program are available on Wikimedia
Commons [4] in four languages.
The Training of Trainers program is a 9-week online learning experience
that prepares participants to implement the Reading Wikipedia in the
Classroom program locally - by the end of the ToT, successful participants
will be certified to lead the program in their countries. Participants who
complete the ToT will also have access to a pool of funding that can
support their local implementation of the program. Applications are open
from *January 31st to February 20th*, 2022. You can find the application
form, important dates, and general guidance on Meta-Wiki [5] and check out
this newsletter article [6] to learn about the experience and learnings of
the first ToT cohort in 2021.
You’re also invited to join our information session on February 11, 2022 at
13:00 UTC where we’ll share more details and answer any pending questions
(find the link to join on Meta-Wiki [5]). If you have any questions ahead
of this event, please don’t hesitate to reach out to the team:
education(a)wikimedia.org
We look forward to seeing you at the information session!

The program report shows us how teachers’ attitudes towards Wikipedia
changed as they moved through the program. For example, one teacher from
Bolivia said that at first he “thought that Wikipedia was a platform like
Google, but now I value all the volunteer work done by the community behind
it”. The program model also supported members of the local Wikimedia
affiliates to improve their capacity to organize and lead education
initiatives. Currently, the Wikimedia affiliates in Bolivia and Morocco are
working on second editions of the program.

Hello everyone,
The Community Development team
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Community_Development> at the Wikimedia
Foundation is hosting our first ever community call on February 23, 2022
from 15:00 - 16:00 UTC on Zoom <https://wikimedia.zoom.us/j/84302371758>.
The purpose of the community call is to provide a space for volunteers to
meet the Community Development team. The five-person Community Development
team is responsible for developing accessible opportunities for volunteers
to grow critical capacities and leadership skills for movement
sustainability and growth. The community call is also a shared space for
all volunteers to hear or speak about projects related to capacity building
& leadership development in the Wikimedia community.
Our first call, Meet the Community Development Team will include a sign up
sheet
<https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdIiyAlq7uKBp4eqmnbyVr9Zmi3LBjCQgZ…>for
those who would like to speak for 5-10 minutes about their
individual/community capacity building work.
If you would simply like to attend and listen, join the Zoom link at the
scheduled call time, please find the link here
<https://wikimedia.zoom.us/j/84302371758>.
Although the primary language of the call is English, we are committed to
providing simultaneous translation to the best of our ability. Please use
the same sign up sheet
<https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdIiyAlq7uKBp4eqmnbyVr9Zmi3LBjCQgZ…>
to indicate your language preference so that we can best accommodate
translation support as needed.
Some may be asking, what is capacity building and why is the Community
Development team supporting this work?
What is capacity building? Capacity building is any activity aimed at
developing a skill or capability in others; it can take many forms, ranging
from formal training through online self-study courses to individual
mentorship.
The “Invest in Skill and Leadership Development”
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Strategy/Wikimedia_movement/2018-20/Recomme…>
recommendation of the 2030 Wikimedia Movement Strategy
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Strategy/Wikimedia_movement/2018-20/Recomme…>encourages
movement-wide capacity building as a necessity to achieve our strategic
commitment to Knowledge Equity. Capacity building has the ability to
encourage diversity, redistribute and share resources, welcome newcomers
and grow communities.
Community Development is launching this series to ensure we can hear
directly from volunteers who are interested in or who already are leading
capacity building work in their communities. This is one one way we plan to
create a space for direct conversations with volunteers about the different
contexts, challenges, and opportunities in capacity building across the
movement.
How do our projects relate to capacity building and leadership development?
Our team's portfolio is a curation of online and offline learning programs
and resources that aim to enable skill development and resilience in the
movement.
Some of our recent capacity building projects include the Wikilearn Online
Learning Pilot
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Community_Development/WikiLearn>, Board of
Trustees Candidate toolkit
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Foundation_elections/Candidate_Re…>and
the 2021 Wikimania Speaker Series
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Community_Development/What_we_do>.
In order for us to continue building relevant curricula and programming, we
need to hear from the Wikimedia movement. Please visit the Community
Development team page
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Community_Development> to learn more about
our capacity building and leadership development projects.
