tl;dr: Looking for a way to engage secondary school teachers with
Wikipedia? Become a certified trainer of the Reading Wikipedia in the
Classroom program! Apply from Jan. 31 - Feb. 20. Information session coming
up on February 11, 2022 at 13:00 UTC
Hola everybody!
The Education team at the Wikimedia Foundation is happy to announce that
applications are open for the second cohort of the Training of Trainers
(ToT) program for “Reading Wikipedia in the Classroom”! This call is open
for Wikimedians, educators, and members of mission-aligned organizations
who believe in the value of Wikipedia to advance key 21st century skills
[1] and who are interested in implementing the “Reading Wikipedia in the
Classroom” program in their countries.
Reading Wikipedia in the Classroom[2] is a professional development program
for secondary school teachers that aligns a critical approach to Wikipedia
with UNESCO’s Media and Information Literacy framework. You can read more
details about the impact of the pilot experience in our report [3]. The
educational resources created for the program are available on Wikimedia
Commons [4] in four languages.
The Training of Trainers program is a 9-week online learning experience
that prepares participants to implement the Reading Wikipedia in the
Classroom program locally - by the end of the ToT, successful participants
will be certified to lead the program in their countries. Participants who
complete the ToT will also have access to a pool of funding that can
support their local implementation of the program. Applications are open
from *January 31st to February 20th*, 2022. You can find the application
form, important dates, and general guidance on Meta-Wiki [5] and check out
this newsletter article [6] to learn about the experience and learnings of
the first ToT cohort in 2021.
You’re also invited to join our information session on February 11, 2022 at
13:00 UTC where we’ll share more details and answer any pending questions
(find the link to join on Meta-Wiki [5]). If you have any questions ahead
of this event, please don’t hesitate to reach out to the team:
education(a)wikimedia.org
We look forward to seeing you at the information session!

The program report shows us how teachers’ attitudes towards Wikipedia
changed as they moved through the program. For example, one teacher from
Bolivia said that at first he “thought that Wikipedia was a platform like
Google, but now I value all the volunteer work done by the community behind
it”. The program model also supported members of the local Wikimedia
affiliates to improve their capacity to organize and lead education
initiatives. Currently, the Wikimedia affiliates in Bolivia and Morocco are
working on second editions of the program.

Dear Wikimedians,
I hope you are having a good start of the year. I’m writing on behalf of
the organizing team to announce and invite you all to the first EduWiki
Week.
The idea of EduWiki Week comes from Wikidata Education Week
<https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Wikidata:Eighth_Birthday/Wikidata_Education_W…>,
a virtual celebration event the Education team at Wikimedia Foundation had
organized during the 8th birthday of Wikidata.
EduWiki Week is planned as a virtual festival and will be celebrated from
21st February 2022 to 25th February 2022. This will be a hybrid event with
asynchronous activities, live interviews, and a final synchronous session.
This is our first time organizing a virtual event of this format! The
celebration has three main objectives: to connect our volunteers across the
globe with each other and with leaders in the education sector; to foster
collaboration within our movement; and to promote the work done in
education in our movement.
Everyone is invited to participate! How can you do it?
-
Asynchronous Celebrations
Local events organized by affiliates and volunteers for their community
members, teachers, and other stakeholders in the education sector. You can
organize interviews, edit-a-thons, virtual carnivals focused on the theme
of education.
-> To participate, add your event/campaign to this page
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Education/EduWiki_Week_2022/Asynchronous_Ce…>
here with a description of the event. Use the hashtag #EduWikiWeek2022 on
social media posts.
-
Live Interviews
5 live interviews focused on different topics related to global education
-> To participate, Watch the session on our Facebook page YouTube channel.
The schedule of the interviews will be available soon.
-
Community Showcase and Connection
A 4 hours long synchronous event to be held on 23rd February, 2022.
This includes 9 lightning talks for 20 minutes each and an hour-long
mingling session for connections, networking, and sending wikiloves.
(Mingling session will not be broadcasted)
-> To present a lightning talk, submit your proposals before the 30th
January on Meta-Wiki
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Education/EduWiki_Week_2022#Community_Showc…>.
It can be a live or pre-recorded presentation. To attend this event,
registration will be open from 5th February until 18th February.
You can watch it Live on Facebook and YouTube. We’ll make the recordings
available on Meta-Wiki a few weeks after the event as well. While waiting
for the EduWiki Week, enjoy the interviews from Wikidata Education Week
<https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Wikidata:Eighth_Birthday/Wikidata_Education_W…>.
More information coming soon, Stay tuned.
We hope everyone is as enthusiastic about this event as we are!

Dear Wikimedians,
Greetings from the education team. I hope everyone is off to an exciting
start in the new year. I'm hoping that 2022 will be kinder to all of us
than the previous two years. Despite many obstacles in the past few years,
all the stories I read through the newsletters always motivated me and made
me feel special to be a part of such an amazing movement that is always
looking for innovative ways to bring the value of Wikimedia projects to the
education sector.
Let's start the year by getting to know the group that helped in sharing
our stories and learning more about the newsletter. Please join us on the
13th of January at 12:30 UTC for a live chat with the EduWiki Outreach
Collboartors Newsletter and Comms team on Facebook. Meet the members behind
the "This Month in Education" newsletter, learn the process behind its
publication, and get other updates. This meeting will be recorded, and I
will share the link in this email thread.
