Dear all,
As you know, Wikimania is happening in a couple of week and we'll soon have
a chance to meet in person with at least a few of you in Stockholm.
I'm happy to report that the Education Space is 90% ready (and will be 100%
ready in the coming days), which give me a good opportunity to thank the
Program Committee that worked on making our Space's program a reality!
I'd also like to thank Krishna
<https://www.facebook.com/KCVelaga?fref=gs&__tn__=%2CdK-R-R&eid=ARCIUxMK-iQM…>,
who've created this beautiful page that lists all sessions
<https://wikimania.wikimedia.org/wiki/2019:Education/Program>in our space
<https://wikimania.wikimedia.org/wiki/2019:Education/Program> and their
rooms. You can of course see it as part of the whole Wikimania Program,
which is also linked at the top of this page.
Please note:
1. 1) The content of each submission page will be edited further in the
coming days so you'll have an updated version of the speakers and content.
Still if there are any questions, please let us know.
2. 2) We're planning a meetup for everyone interested in Education.
It'll be on Friday at 21:00, probably at one of the hotels, after dinner,
so stay tuned. We'll update exactly where when we are there.
3. 3) Some session will be featuring people joining us remotely. We're
really hoping all sessions will be recorded, but as of now, that's not
confirmed yet.
Finally, we've made an effort to have an active and engaging program,
preferring this year more panels and workshops, and keeping personal
lectures to a minimum, with only 2 keynote lectures and 1 session of
TED-like 10 minutes lightning talks. We've also made an effort to identify
missing topics and "invite" speakers to explore them. *If you have any
questions or comments on the program and its format, please feel free to
contact us. *
Looking forward to meeting you all,
Shani (on behalf of the program's committee)

Hi Federico,
It seems this email by Nichole didn't reach the list. As Nichole said, we
are not removing information from anywhere. We will use all the existing
platforms which are being used by the community, also in the meantime
explore how the Wikimedia Space could be integrated to them.
Best!

Dear Wikimedia Education community,
We’re so excited to invite you to explore Wikimedia Space [1] with us
through a new category just for Education[2]. We’ll be piloting the use of
this category to centralize communications about Wikimedia & Education,
share active discussions, and announce events on the
centralized map[3] and calendar[4]. You’ll still be able to find static
information and resources on Outreach Wiki, with more dynamic information
living on Wikimedia Space.
Wikimedia Space is a new platform introduced by the Wikimedia Foundation
which aims to become a point of centralization and redistribution of news
and conversations. The Space is also a place where anyone can ask any
question related to Wikimedia and find answers. Wikimedia Space has a
variety of multilingual features [5] that are currently being expanded, and
can already host resources and conversations in multiple languages. As the
Wikimedia Space is still a prototype, together we can explore different
opportunities and collaborations.
Some of the future possibilities include adding lesson plans, publishing
event reports, sharing news, and even fostering mentorship in closed
groups. Let’s brainstorm together[6] on what we want for our Education
category!

Dear all,
Sharing news of an event that will take place during October. Here's the
invite I got from Alek Tarkowski. Please see it as if it was made to you
individually. It is really important that we send someone from our
community to interact with this community, so anyone interested in Open
Education Advocacy, this one's for you!
Note that there are scholarships, but you need to *apply by July 28t*h, so
please hurry up. Here's a link to the application form
<https://oerpolicy.eu/oe-policy-forum/> is in the first link.
Best,
Shani & the Wikipedia & Education User Group.
--------------------------------------------------------
I am writing to invite you to the fourth edition of the Open Education
Policy Forum. Every year, we bring together advocates, activists, and
policymakers working on Open Education policies, in Europe and beyond.
This year, we are introducing some changes to our concept and hope to
provide stronger support for people working on open education policies. I
hope that you will consider joining us this year and becoming one of our
Forum’s Fellows.
Our call for participation is open until 28 July. Please visit our website
for detailed information concerning the Forum, participation in the policy
incubation program and scholarship opportunities:
https://oerpolicy.eu/oe-policy-forum/
<https://l.facebook.com/l.php?u=https%3A%2F%2Foerpolicy.eu%2Foe-policy-forum…>
For this year’s edition, we chose the theme “Empowering Advocates for
Change”. The two-day event will be the beginning of a six-month policy
incubation process that will help Forum participants develop open policies
in their institutions, regions or countries.
This year’s Forum will take place on 7-8 October in Warsaw, Poland. We are
very happy to partner with SPARC and Open Education Consortium, two leading
organisations in the field of open education advocacy.
We are seeking activists and advocates - both experienced and beginning
Open Education policy work - who want to become this year’s Fellows of the
Open Education Policy Forum. We are looking for people who are developing
open education policies on the international, national or institutional
level. We are keen to support policies that concern various aspects of open
education, as well as related fields of openness. Participants in our Forum
will get support for their policy work from key experts in our field.
We are also seeking mentors for our program - please get in touch if you
would like to share your knowledge and experiences with others.
We will also be grateful for sharing this information with your colleagues
who might be interested in participating.
We are looking forward to having some of you as our Fellows,
Alek (and the Open Education Policy Forum team)

Attention Nichole Saad,
I am using this list to bypass a technical problem. Apologies to the uninvolved
There seem to be technical problems with the Greenhouse course on Moodle
At https://wikimedia-education.moodle.school/mod/forum/view.php?id=23 there is no way apparent for me to open a thread to explain that there is no way to open a thread on the forum specifically intended for asking general questions about navigating the unit. It would be more amusing if it was not so frustrating. Thee does not appear to be any obvious way to communicate with the course providers through the current setup of the course.
Cheers,
Peter Southwood

The Geneva (Switzerland) education department has been using Moodle for
years and is quite satisfied with the platform. A few films were produced
on the subject:
https://edu.ge.ch/site/archiprod/?s=DIP-Moodle
That been said, Moodle is great for online courses with a Classroom size
number of attendees. That is probably fine for us, I do not think that we
will have hundreds and hundreds of simultaneous participants. I do have not
any personal experience with a Moodle course addressing thousands of
attendees.
Best regards
Gabe

End of Education Digest, Vol 98, Issue 7
****************************************
Hey everyone,
Hope the month of July is going well! We have some updates for you. We’ve
been holding Office Hours for the past 11 months, and have engaged with
more than 40 Wikimedians during that time. We’ve enjoyed chatting about
topics ranging from the usefulness of Wikiversity to how best to support
students who edit on mobile phones. Though Office Hours have been
reasonably well attended, we’ve noticed that it may be more useful to
slightly restructure this time. From July, we’ll be hosting only one open
Office Hours event, while experimenting with a way to deep dive with
individuals who need more 1:1 consulting.
While the monthly Office Hours event will remain the same, we are excited
to introduce Office Space. Our goal for Office Space is to provide 1:1
consultation to Wikimedians involved in education activities. As a result
of Office Space, we hope individuals and groups interested in Wikimedia in
education will have better capacity to make their initiatives strong,
results oriented and scalable.
Office Hours will be an open platform for The Wikimedia Foundation
Education Team to hear from the community, share what we’re doing and
answer questions in an open forum where we can learn from each other. The
platform provides an opportunity to share your work with others and learn
from them, get updates from activities happening around the movement and
look for opportunities to collaborate.
Office Space will be a platform where you can schedule a 1:1 consultation
with one or more members of the education team. We’re setting aside 4.5
hours of team time a month for ½ hour or 1 hour consultations. This will
help you get answers to specific questions, and tap into the various
expertise of the Wikimedia Foundation Education Team. We will start
hostingOffice Space events from the month of August. We will triage
incoming requests based on when they were received, and the nature of the
request. We hope that through this mechanism our support to the community
is fair and productive.
>From August, the Education Team will host one Office Hours and one Office
Space each month for the Wikimedians involved in education activities or
are interested in them. We will be announcing Office Hours events on
the Wikimedia
Space <https://discuss-space.wmflabs.org/tags/c/events/education> and will
update the Office Hours events and the minutes of meeting there.
You can sign up for a 1:1 Office Space consultation for August! Just fill
out the form here: http://bit.ly/2xHwwOz
Do you have queries related to this? Feel free to reach out to me via email
or start a discussion here :
