Introducing the Wikimedia Resource Center

Hi all, As we have stated in our annual plan [1], “currently, community members must search many pages and places to stay informed about Foundation activities and resources.” We have worked in the past two quarters to create a single point of entry. We call it the Wikimedia Resource Center, and its alpha version is now live on Meta Wikimedia: https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Resource_Center As the movement expands to include more affiliates and more programmatic activities every year, newer Wikimedians are faced with lack of experience in the movement and its various channels for requesting support. In order to expand Wikimedia communities’ efforts, we want to provide easy access to resources that support their very important work. The [[m:Wikimedia Resource Center]] is a hub designed in response to this issue: it is intended to evolve into a single point of entry for Wikimedians all over the world to the variety of resources and types of staff support they may need to develop new initiatives or also expand existing ones. This version of the Resource Center is only the beginning. For phase two of the project, we will enable volunteer Wikimedians to add resources developed by other individuals or organizations to the Wikimedia Resource Center, and in phase three, the Wikimedia Resource Center will include features to better connect Wikimedians to other Wikimedians that can support them. We want to hear what you think about this prototype and our plans for it! If you have comments about the Wikimedia Resource Center, you can submit your feedback publicly, on the Talk Page, or privately, via a survey hosted by a third party, that shouldn’t take you more than 4 minutes to complete. Nichole, however I may understand that you were busy, someone really could have given the go-ahead. I think I recall seeing several drafts in the Newsroom and then when I looked again they weren't there. As this was not the way I recall things working in the previous issues, I drew the conclusion that the Newsletter had reverted to the quarterly format. As I have obtained parental consent forms for uploading photos of my students, and they will be disappointed if they are not included in this newsletter (by June newsletter I meant the one with May news to be released in June and not the June news to be released in July), please wait until a little later when I will upload the draft I have prepared before releasing the Newsletter. There is a 10 hour time difference between Greece and San Francisco so I think this is the least I could expect of the person in charge of the Wikipedia in Education newsletter. Hello all:) I have been waiting for an email or Meta post inviting editors to submit stories for the June Wikipedia in Education Newsletter. I have checked all the relevant wiki spaces and there's nothing there. Had we not returned to the monthly format? Am I missing out on something? I have important stories to share, and I'm sure other educators around the world do also: this is the end of the school year for most countries. All the work we have been doing all year has matured, our students have worked hard with impressive results. Your help needed: update on strategy & feedback from EDU-Wiki group

Dear Education enthusiasts, Some of you may have heard that Cycle 1 of the movement strategy process is over and the second round has already opened. Below are some details on the results of round 1, as well as details on round 2. You can help by doing 2 things: 1 - *Help share these details with your local communities*, especially in case they do not have community liaisons, and then share your personal / local thoughts on these themes there. 2 - *Participate in cycle 2 from an EDU-Wiki perspective (which is where we need your help) - * Our efforts around the world are dedicated to spreading the use of Wikipedia & its sister projects as teaching and learning tools, in the hope of not only creating high quality information in wiki projects, but also help students develop relevant 21 century skills. As mentioned, most of our work is done locally and you are all encouraged to give your personal / local feedback via your local affiliates or directly into the designated Cycle 2 page. However, *we also have EDU-Wiki needs that are global and relevant to all of us.* It is therefore important that we don't miss this once in a lifetime opportunity to let our joint voice be heard *as a united group*. Draft Wiki Ed Annual Plan 2017-18

The Wiki Education Foundation's draft annual report for 2016–17 and draft annual plan for 2017–18 is now available on Meta: https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wiki_Education_Foundation/Annual_Plan_2017-… This marks the first time that Wiki Ed staff have solicited Wikimedia community comments and questions on our draft. We're doing so this year based on conversations with members of the Simple APG Committee. As you can see in our plan, Wiki Ed intends to enter the FDC process this fall. During the review process from the Simple APG committee this spring, committee members raised concerns about a lack of opportunity for comments on Wiki Ed's draft annual plans. While we always publish our board-approved annual plan on our website, we haven't offered a draft for comments in the past. In an effort to be more transparent and respond to the Simple APG committee's feedback, I've posted the draft of the annual plan on Meta and invite comments and questions from the broader Wikimedia community on the draft talk page. Comments made prior to May 28 will be taken into account when Wiki Ed staff prepare a final version of the plan for the board to vote upon. Agreed that what we're seeing are Internet-enabled implementations of old practices. I think that there has been a recent renewal of awareness of how effective these dark arts can be at generating revenue and perhaps affecting political systems. Over the years, a number of people and organizations have tried to manipulate the neutrality of Wikipedia content for political, financial, or PR advantage. I have the impression that the community's human resources capacity and technical tools are currently insufficient in comparison to the scale of the problems. I'm hoping that some of the tools that are being developed as a part of the anti-harassment initiative will help a little. I'm also thinking that a good exercise for students in Wikipedia in Education classes would be to identify content that is noncompliant with neutrality and verifiability standards, and either change that content themselves or flag it for review by more experienced editors.
