Hi everyone, After nearly 3 years at the Wikimedia Foundation, I am moving on to new opportunities [1]. My last day at WMF will be Friday, 22 February. This has been a very difficult decision. The work that all of us engage in on a daily basis in the Wikipedia Education Program has been so incredibly inspiring, and I know I will miss you all. You are such an amazing and brilliant group of people, and I feel enormously fortunate to have had the opportunity to work closely with so many of you. I plan on staying in touch with many of you, and I hope you'll do the same. Vikidia is an equivalent of Wikipedia for 8 to 13 years old children. I've already sent a message about it more than a year ago. It exists in French, Spanish and Italian (and is about to be launched in Russian) whereas another group opened it in dutch : http://fr.vikidia.org/ ; http://es.vikidia.org/ ; http://it.vikidia.org/ There has been a sister project proposal page for a long time on Meta : http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikikids ...and I have update it. fr.vikidia.org ans wikikids.nl are doing well, whereas es. and it. not so well. Vikidia in French is about 1 to 2 % of the importance of Wikipedia in French for activity, number of article and audience, which is not bad. I can tell you more about the spanish Vikidia, that has had good supporter but deserve new people to join in or even an organisation to take it in charge. Wikitravel/Wikivoyage has recently be adopted as a sister project by the WMF. This could be possible for Vikidia/wikikids. Wikipedia in Education, Uruguay project

Hello all. Lianna has suggested to me that I joined to this list and now here I am. I tell them that in Uruguay with CFE and CEIBAL support we are developing a project on the subject Wikipedia in Education, I am directing the project. Here I pass more information: The "Wikipedia in Education" is a project that began late last year, and will be developed this year and next year. According to the results we may be able to continue it after 2014. We have yet two videos uploaded to youtube about the inaugural project activity. A lecture given by me and another by Angeles Soletic, the first of which is Wikipedia and how it works. The second is about the use of Wikipedia in Education. UPDATE: Interested in a global meet-up?

Thanks to everyone who filled out the quick survey I sent earlier this week. The good news is that it looks like there are enough people who are already planning to attend the Chapters Meeting in Milan to make it worthwhile to have the education workshop in conjunction with it. The bad news is that after further research, it looks like there isn't any money available from the Wikimedia Foundation for travel funding. :( We realize this significantly limits the number of people who are able to attend, but given the choice of a meeting with a small number of education program leaders who were already coming to the chapters meeting and no in-person meeting at all, we've chosen to move forward with the small meeting. We're working on some videoconferencing solution to bring people in virtually if that can be feasible, and we'll do our best to document the discussions well. We'll also plan a larger meeting in conjunction with Wikimania 2013 in Hong Kong, in hopes that more program leaders worldwide will be able to attend that. We Need a New Kind of Learner

Hi all, I would like to share this article by Ainissa Ramirez (going to see her TED Talk later when I have time) * We Need a New Kind of Learner <http://bigthink.com/experts-corner/we-need-a-new-kind-of-learner> This reminds me when I accepted to coordinate the education program in Brazil and why I think Wikipedia can be useful in education. In Brazil, I think the description of professor Feynman about our classroom is still valid [1] in a large extent. Once I gave an interview to a French radio about Wikipedia (in 2011, a few days before Wikimania in Gdansk) and I just mentioned these points, that Wikipedia could be used as a potential tool for students learn how to make research and develop their critical thinking. On the curiosity point, I think Aaron Swartz was a great example, and I think we can see this on his article "How to get a job like mine" <https://aaronsw.jottit.com/howtoget>. Since we have here in this list professors from a lot of places in the world, I would love to know if you see also problems like those pointed out in [1] on schools. Culturally, it could be interesting for us to share these experiences and stress the global nature of the Wikipedia Education Program. Interested in a global meet-up?

Are you running an Education Program in your country? Do you want to start working with instructors and students to improve Wikipedia? Are you interested in helping shape a global community of program leaders to grow Wikipedia's use in education worldwide? We are thinking about convening an Education Program Leaders Workshop, where 20-30 program leaders worldwide will gather for one day to build a global community to share learnings and help each other overcome challenges. We're considering having this all-day workshop in conjunction with the Chapters Meeting hosted by Wikimedia Italia on April 19-21 in Milan, but before we finalize the details, we wanted to see if this would be a convenient time with enough people to make it worthwhile.
