Subject: [Wikimedia-l] "Wikipedia in the classroom" in Guarani language
To: Wikimedia Mailing List <wikimedia-l(a)lists.wikimedia.org>
This week, Wikimedia Argentina published the first edition of "Vikipetã
mbo'eha kotýpe" [1], "Wikipedia in the classroom" in Guarani, an indigenous
language spoken in Northern Argentina, Paraguay and Bolivia. It is the
first Wikipedia related publication made in an American indigenous language.
The goal of “Wikipedia in the classroom”, made originally in Spanish, is to
help teachers to understand what is Wikipedia, how it works and how they
can use it in an useful way. Most students already use Wikipedia so it is
really important that teachers know what to do.
“Wikipedia in the classroom” is an initiative launched in 2010 by Wikimedia
Argentina with the support of different institutions, including the
Education portal of the Argentine government, educ.ar. They released an
special website about the project.[2] Wikimedia Argentina will print 500
booklets of the Guarani edition to be distributed in schools and other
educational institutions, and we expect to publish new editions in other
indigenous languages in 2013.
Kind regards,
Osmar Valdebenito G.

Greetings! You may have seen that we have released two more brochures in
the Education lineup, bringing the total to three:
1) Instructor Basics: How to use Wikipedia as a teaching tool:
http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Instructor_Basics_How_to_Use_Wikiped…
2) The Syllabus: A 12-week assignment to write a Wikipedia article:
http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Sample_Syllabus_for_Wikipedia_assign…
3) Case Studies: How professors are teaching with Wikipedia:
http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Wikipedia_Education_Program_Case_Stu…
See more about them all here:
http://blog.wikimedia.org/2012/12/03/brochures-help-instructors-who-want-to…
I'm really excited to see that the Case Studies brochure (released in June)
has already been translated into several languages:
http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Case_Studies_brochure
If I've missed one, please add the category to it on Commons.
I have the design files for all three of these brochures available in both
Adobe InDesign or Scribus. They're in a Dropbox folder, and I'm happy to
share the folder with you -- just email me and let me know which email
address you'd like me to share the folder with. I encourage any chapter or
group working on an education program to not just translate, but also
localize the brochures -- you know best what works with your audience and
your language Wikipedia. I've tried to make it generic enough that it will
be similar across most language Wikipedias, but you are the experts in your
local education system and Wikipedia language, so please update accordingly.
If you have any ideas for other materials that would help you, please let
me know.
Thanks,
LiAnna

Hi all,
I'm Jane Park with CC and coordinating the P2PU School of Open initiative.
More on that here: http://schoolofopen.org/
Elly suggested I forward to this list since there is a lot of overlap (and
several P2PU courses have already been developed in collaboration with
Wikipedia folks).
We are currently looking for people to take over development of Public
Domain Detective and improving it in time for Public Domain Day (Jan 1,
2013)
https://p2pu.org/en/groups/applied-open-discovering-and-contributing-to-the…http://publicdomainday.org/
Ping me if interested! Also feel free to take a look at the other courses
in development/draft at schoolofopen.org to see if you're interested in
helping to develop those or start a new one. Mailing list info is also all
there.
Cheers,
Jane

Hey Elly,
Yes I've been in touch with Wikipedia Loves Libraries and Open.Michigan -
who are developing or developed both
https://p2pu.org/en/groups/contributing-to-wikimedia-commons/ and
https://p2pu.org/en/groups/open-access-wikipedia-challenge/. I believe Pete
Forsythe (also on this list) developed
https://p2pu.org/en/groups/wikipedia-aim-for-featured-article/.
I'll definitely join the list to see if there are even more overlapping
initiatives we could collaborate on.
Cheers,
Jane

See the infographic in the blog post bellow
http://blog.reyjunco.com/how-college-students-find-and-use-information-info…
7 out of 10 students use Wikipedia, according to this reseach.
I haven't checked the details and reliability of the research.
