Note: Apologies for cross-posting and sending in English. This message is available for translation on Meta-Wiki.[1]
As we mentioned last month, the Wikimedia movement is beginning a movement-wide strategy discussion, a process which will run throughout 2017. This movement strategy discussion will focus on the future of our movement: where we want to go together, and what we want to achieve.
Regular updates are being sent to the Wikimedia-l mailing list,[2] and posted on Meta-Wiki.[3] Each month, we are sending overviews of these updates to this list as well.
Here is a overview of the updates that have been sent since our message last month:
Update 7 on Wikimedia movement strategy process (16 February 2017)
- Development of documentation for Tracks A & B
Update 8 on Wikimedia movement strategy process (24 February 2017)
- Introduction of Track Leads for all four audience tracks
Update 9 on Wikimedia movement strategy process (2 March 2017)
- Seeking feedback on documents being used to help facilitate upcoming community discussions
Sign up to receive future announcements and monthly highlights of strategy updates on your user talk page: https://meta.wikimedia.org/?curid=10153505
More information about the movement strategy is available on the Meta-Wiki 2017 Wikimedia movement strategy portal.[3]

Dear Community
In the past recent years , we have been continuously featuring known
Wikimedians on our platform.
But this time , we have come across a contributor who we feel that if we
don't highlight his work, it will be an injustice to his contributions.
Keeping his request in mind, we have decided not to reveal his name or
photo. The only thing which we can reveal is his Username
*User:SM7*
User:SM7
<https://bh.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E0%A4%AA%E0%A5%8D%E0%A4%B0%E0%A4%AF%E0%A5%8B…>,
the silent *anonymous* poster boy for Bhojpuri and Hindi Wikipedia has been
working since 2011 with over 59,000 global edits
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:CentralAuth/SM7> without any
recognition. He would have continued to be an unsung hero with his awesome
work for the flourishment of Wikipedia for no one knows how long, if we
would not have discovered his work recently. He is a sysop on Hindi and
Bhojpuri Wikipedia where he is continuously working to bring new
contributors and quality contents. User:SM7 is a teacher by profession
based somewhere in Uttar Pradesh. Writing on region and geographical
features are one of the favourite topics of User:SM7.
User:SM7 came to know about Wikipedia while searching something on Google,
it was then he noticed that there is a link to Bhojpuri Wikipedia on the
sidebar of the article page he was looking at on English Wikipedia. Like
others, he was excited when he found Wikipedia on his native language and
started contributing to it by creating & improving articles. Although he
invests a lot of time for the growth of Wikipedia, he always prefers to
stay anonymous, he says, "I wanted to be judged only by my contributions on
wiki and the way I take part in discussions etc. NOT by information based
on what I do in real life, or where I live, or what my educational
qualifications are."
Read the Full Featured Wikimedian article on User:SM7 Here

I would like to thank User:JimCarter for getting us in touch with this
amazing contributor & helping to write the article on him
If you know any WIkimedian whom you think should be featured, please feel
free to nominate them here

Subject: [Wikimedia Education] Changes to the 'Save' button
To: Wikimedia Education <education(a)lists.wikimedia.org>,
glam(a)lists.wikimedia.org <glam(a)lists.wikimedia.org>
*Nutshell: The big, blue button will soon say "Publish page" instead of
"Save page", because when you click it, the contents get published on the
internet.*
I apologize for cross-posting this to the GLAM and Education lists:
A long-requested change to the "Save" button may finally happen towards the
end of March. This is a button that anyone leading a workshop about
editing is going to talk about, so I wanted to make sure that you didn't
get surprised by this change.
Last year, the WMF looked into an old request to clarify the language on
the "Save" button, which confuses some new contributors. The main problem
is that it is unclear whether "Save" means "save a private copy" (as it
does on most websites these days) or "irrevocably post this to the
internet". This confusion apparently explains a few unwanted behaviors,
such as editors who save the page ("just to be safe") before previewing
their changes.
There are some other reasons behind to do this: It creates some
inconsistency in the interface, as some things (e.g., Special:Preferences)
get saved but kept private, while other things (e.g., normal wiki pages)
get saved and immediately published. It is also difficult to translate the
label into some languages, as the word has multiple possible translations
in some languages.
The plan, therefore, is to change "Save" to "Publish". Instead of the big
blue[1] button saying "Save page" (for a new page) or "Save changes" (when
you edit an existing page), the button will instead say "Publish page" or
"Publish changes".
The upside to this small change is that new contributors will understand
that all of their edits go to the public immediately.[2] The downside is
that all of the documentation and help pages is going to be out of date.
This plan was announced on the wikis last August, and is tentatively
scheduled for sometime in March. I hope that this extra note will keep you
from getting surprised in front of a group and give you enough time to
update any handouts that you might be using in the future.

[1] The color of this button in all of the older wikitext editors will be
changing this week. It's going to be big and blue.
[2] This is true even when the wiki is using FlaggedRevisions or
PendingChanges, because the un-accepted changes can be seen by the general
public from the history page or from &oldid URLs, regardless of whether the
revision has been accepted.
