Hello all,
You might have already heard the buzz: the Wikimedia Hackathon is gearing up for an incredible event in Tallinn, Estonia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tallinn, from May 3rd - 5th, 2024. Now, we're thrilled to announce that the Registration form is now open https://pretix.eu/wikimedia/wmhackathon2024/! The Registration form also includes an optional Scholarship application https://pretix.eu/wikimedia/wmhackathon2024/ https://pretix.eu/wikimedia/wmhackathon2024/which will run until January 5th 2024.
Participation in the onsite Wikimedia Hackathon in Tallinn is contingent upon registration. The registration portal will remain accessible until we hit our venue's capacity, which is approximately set at 220 participants. Here's the exciting part: the event itself is entirely free of charge ensuring that everyone has an opportunity to join us. Please note that participants are required to make individual travel arrangements unless they have been awarded a scholarship.

To ensure a vibrant and diverse participation, the Wikimedia Foundation extends scholarships that encompass:
-
Travel -
Accommodation expenses for a selected group of technical contributors.
The application form is seamlessly integrated into the registration process and will remain accessible until January 5th 2024. For comprehensive details about the scholarship process, committee, and eligibility criteria, please visit the dedicated page https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Hackathon_2024/Participate#Scholarships .
It's worth noting that the registration and scholarship application form is powered by Pretix, an open-source third-party service, which may introduce additional terms. If you have inquiries regarding privacy and data handling, consult the privacy statement https://foundation.wikimedia.org/wiki/Legal:Wikimedia_Hackathon_2024_Privacy_Statement for more information. Your participation matters, and we're committed to making it as accessible as possible!

For the organizing team,
Hello,
I think it is great that there will be no fee to attend at the Wikimedia Hackathon 2024. I prefer virtual events or visiting a decentralized event nearby if an onsite attendence likely requires long distance travelling. At the moment I dont like to use a plane to travel to a place. From my point of view the enviromental impact of the Wikimedia Hackathon is very high. As I come from Germany I have the regular opportunity to meet other people who are participating in the Wikimedia projects and so this has an influence on my point of view. There are other chances to meet people who are involved in the Wikimedia projects. What do you think about the enviromental impact of the Wikimedia Hackathon. As you have announced it already I have no problem if the next Wikimedia Hackathon happens as an onsite event. For further editions of the Wikimedia Hackathon I hope that there will be a more decentralized version of it that helps to avoid long distance travelling where it seems to be possible.
Hi tim.herb@gmx.de,
Thank you for sharing your perspective on the Wikimedia Hackathon 2024. We appreciate your preference for virtual or decentralized events, especially considering the environmental impact of long-distance travel.
We'll keep your thoughts in mind as we continue to evolve and improve the format of the Wikimedia Hackathon in the coming years. If you have any further suggestions or specific ideas, feel free to share them. Your input is crucial in shaping the direction of our events.
Best regards,

Hi! I'm a MediaWiki developer from Argentina and I've refrained from going to any more Wikimedia Hackathons since Vienna 2017, because of the high carbon emissions that my participation would cause. I'd also love to see a solution that allows me to participate without having to travel half the world. Kind regards,
