TL;DR: Launch of Wikimedia Affiliates Data Portal
We are launching a new form-based annual reporting system for Wikimedia affiliates [1], as well as a basic Affiliates data query system. We would love your feedback. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
Hello, Affiliate Leaders & Community Members,
Tired of the affiliate reports [2] wiki table of death? SO are we!
The Learning & Evaluation team is pleased to announce the launch of the Wikimedia Affiliates Data (WAD) Portal [1]. This portal will serve three purposes as follows:
1. It introduces a new Object-Oriented User Interface (OOUI) [3] form-based report submission interface for annual activity and financial reports. This replaces the wiki mark-up based submission via the Reports page on meta. 2. It introduces the ability for Organizations to update their information using OOUI forms on the fly. 3. It introduces a new simple data query form that allows anyone logged-in to their public wiki accounts to run a query and view results on available Affiliates data. The query tool will be improved in the coming financial year, as we work to code data in Affiliate reports into structured data, to allow for richer analysis.
The Reports page on meta will continue to be visible on meta until the end of June 2020, after which it will be protected and archived. All organizations that are due to submit annual reports at the end of March are encouraged to use the new report submission forms. If you do use the new forms, please share any feedback you have about this new process on the Portal’s talk page
We will hold training seminars for those who wish to be onboarded to the submission forms and the Query system during the months of March and April 2020 (Dates will be communicated soon).
We have taken time to pre-populate the system with basic information about each recognized Wikimedia affiliate, however, should you find any incorrect or outdated information about your group, please use the organization information page[4] to provide updated information.
We trust that you will enjoy the new portal and that you will find it useful. Should you have any problems or encounter bugs in the new forms, please use the Portal talk page [5] to log these, or to simply ask questions. We will collect similar questions to create an FAQ page in due time.

Congratulations on the launch! Knowing the competence of both involved I'm confident the project will be an asset in improving communication between affiliates and wmf as well as improving data collection of reports and good practices of affiliates.
Thanks to all involved for their efforts and as soon as I can I'll check it more closely and help the affiliates I participate in to use and give meaningful feedback to further improve on the new platform.
I'm excited to try it out and participate in the onboarding sessions.
Congrats again on the launch.

Hello, Thanks for the update. The third point you mentioned about (structured) data and data query, that sounds really interesting, and I would love to run such query or attend the (online) seminars you have proposed. About "Tired of the affiliate reports [2] wiki table of death? SO are we" -- I am unsure, the people who wrote long report pages with infographics, and Wikicodes, perhaps could edit that simple Reports table as well.
I started studying the portal and made a minor change to update something 19875666. I understand the portal will be gradually improved, and more information, details will be added (such as for " Attach report link" should it be full URL or Wikilink, or should "What type of Report are you attaching?" have more options? anyway...) I'll further study this, but I don't want to submit the form just to study things. :) So a test/sandbox option for the module/portal would be good.
Thanks Tito Dutta Note: If I don't reply to your email in 2 days, please feel free to remind me over email or phone call.

Hi Dumi,
This looks interesting, but I’m worried that the WMF is still trying to exclude itself from reporting its metrics. Will this new tool also make it easier for the WMF to post its reports?
Thanks, Mike

Thanks for the update Dimi.
The system seems reasonably flexible (assuming the links can be both internal and external). There are two things I'd suggest: - Please track language versions. If multiple languages are available, it would be nice if they can be connected. It would also be helpful to identify languages in the report. - Be generous with the 'other' option. For example, you now only allow monthly and annual reports. Would you discourage quarterly reports to be shared? Or three-year reports? I know those may not be required by WMF, but they may be produced for different purposes. I imagine you would want those to be shared too?
Best, Lodewijk

Hello Dumi,
Thanks for the update and teams efforts on this initiative. I have taken
a
tour on the portal and it looks really simplified and easy to navigate. However, I will be on standby for the training session.

Hi Dumi,
This looks interesting, but I’m worried that the WMF is still trying

make
it
easier for the WMF to post its reports?
Thanks, Mike

TL;DR: Launch of Wikimedia Affiliates Data Portal
We are launching a new form-based annual reporting system for
Wikimedia
affiliates [1], as well as a basic Affiliates data query system. We
would
love your feedback.
Hello, Affiliate Leaders & Community Members,
Tired of the affiliate reports [2] wiki table of death? SO are we!
The Learning & Evaluation team is pleased to announce the launch of
the
Wikimedia Affiliates Data (WAD) Portal [1]. This portal will serve
three
purposes as follows:
- It introduces a new Object-Oriented User Interface (OOUI) [3]
form-based report submission interface for annual activity and
financial
reports. This replaces the wiki mark-up based submission via the Reports page on meta. 2. It introduces the ability for Organizations to update their information using OOUI forms on the fly. 3. It introduces a new simple data query form that allows anyone logged-in to their public wiki accounts to run a query and view
results on
available Affiliates data. The query tool will be improved in the
coming
financial year, as we work to code data in Affiliate reports into structured data, to allow for richer analysis.
The Reports page on meta will continue to be visible on meta
until
the
end of June 2020, after which it will be protected and archived.
All
organizations that are due to submit annual reports at the end of
March
are
encouraged to use the new report submission forms. If you do use
the
new
forms, please share any feedback you have about this new process on
the
Portal’s talk page
We will hold training seminars for those who wish to be onboarded
to
the
submission forms and the Query system during the months of March
and
April
2020 (Dates will be communicated soon).
We have taken time to pre-populate the system with basic
information
about
each recognized Wikimedia affiliate, however, should you find any
incorrect
or outdated information about your group, please use the
organization
information page[4] to provide updated information.
We trust that you will enjoy the new portal and that you will find
it
useful. Should you have any problems or encounter bugs in the new
forms,
please use the Portal talk page [5] to log these, or to simply ask questions. We will collect similar questions to create an FAQ page
in
due
time.
Kindest regards

Hello Dumisani ,
I would like to remind you of the questions in this thread, although I understand that there may be some delays in getting responses due to the issues with Covid-19.
I have not looked into the new portal and I don't have an opinion about it, but I hope that affiliates will find it to be an improvement.
I have one point that I would like to make. Protection of a page is an administrative action, and I do not believe that any WMF staff should make content administrative actions on Meta unless under exceptional circumstances such as a legal mandate. If WMF wants a page on Meta to be protected, then WMF should make a request to a community administrator for page protection, which the administrator may independently decide whether to grant. If WMF wants more control over content, then a more appropriate venue for affiliate reports would be one of the WMF wikis instead of a (mostly) community wiki. I feel that it is important that WMF staff not encroach on the jurisdiction of the community such as by making administrative actions, however small, that can and should be done instead by community administrators.
Thanks,
Hello Pine
Thank you for your response. We appreciate the stewardship that the community has on meta, and this is not in dispute.
In this case because we are working with a system that aims to collect Affiliates data in a structured form, as well as make it accessible to the community via query tools, it became necessary to protect the Lua modules and tables that hold this data. The forms themselves are protected by. default and accessible to administrators only. The individual Affiliates remain in control of the data that they will submit via these forms.
As the data grows, it is possible that we may move that to another wiki, should current security concerns on the data validity and integrity increase. However, we strongly felt that the forms should be developed on meta in order to avoid disrupting established reporting norms by Wikimedia Affiliates.
Be assured that we will continue to be sensitive to community stewardship as we improve the system.

Hi Dumisani,
Thank you for the response.
My concern is mainly regarding the idea of WMF unilaterally making a decision to implement protection of information or assets on Meta. The distinction that I am making is between a request and a unilateral action. If WMF thinks that there is a reason for protection of an asset on Meta, and WMF makes a request to the Meta community or to a Meta admin for that protection, and the request is granted by the community or the Meta admin, then I'm likely to support both the process and the outcome.
There have been some other inquiries and suggestions raised in this thread by Tito Dutta, Lodewijk, and Mike Peel. I am hoping that you will respond to them as well.
I took a brief look at the page https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Affiliates_Data_Portal and a couple of the subpages, and at first glance I think that the design is good. My guess is that as affiliates gain experience with using the portal that there will be some detailed feedback. Perhaps you could create a brief survey to ask affiliates what they think of the portal and for any suggestions.
Thanks,
