Wikimedia is alive with sound, music, and everything in between. From December 6 to 19, 2022, please play a part https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Sound_Logo_Vote and help identify the Sound of All Human Knowledge. Voting is open until 19 December, 23:59 UTC. Learn more on Diff https://diff.wikimedia.org/2022/12/06/vote-for-the-sound-of-all-human-knowledge/ [2].
The sound logo team is grateful to everyone who participated in this global contest. We received 3,235 submissions from 2,094 participants in 135 countries. We are incredibly grateful to the team of volunteer screeners https://diff.wikimedia.org/2022/10/31/screening-3235-sound-submissions/ and the selection committee https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Communications/Sound_Logo/Contest_proposal#How_will_the_final_selection_happen? who, among others, helped to bring us to where we are today. It is now up to Wikimedia to choose its sound logo.
Best wishes,
The sound logo team

I can't vote, but just wanted to send a note to say it was wonderful to hear all of the potential final sound logos. There are so many wonderful ones it will be hard to choose a single sound. One consideration that could have been included in the How to Vote section - the sound should be one people would not tire of hearing frequently...as we do indeed hope they will hear it often!

Thanks for the notes of appreciation shared here on this thread and elsewhere. A great deal of community and staff effort has gone into conceptualizing this contest and making it a reality, especially since May of this year when we switched to a more active phase of the project https://diff.wikimedia.org/2022/05/24/refining-a-global-contest-to-create-the-sound-of-wikimedia/. The great participation in the votes so far is much appreciated. With further thanks to your help and input, we were able to fix a few glitches and oversights as well. We took the precedent of voting and the reliable Schulze method https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schulze_method from recent visual logo contests for Abstract Wikipedia https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Abstract_Wikipedia/Wikifunctions_logo_concept and MediaWiki https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Project:Proposal_for_changing_logo_of_MediaWiki,_2020/Round_2 (you can learn more on Diff https://diff.wikimedia.org/2022/05/14/conceptualizing-a-new-logo-contest-based-on-existing-practices/).
So, please have a listen or listen again, and help select the sound of Wikimedia https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Sound_Logo_Vote.
Best regards, Mehrdad

Hi,
Just to say thank you for sharing the finalists under a free license on Commons: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:2022_Wikimedia_sound_logo_contes... Will the non-finalist sounds also be shared there? Commons needs more freely licenced audio files!
Thanks, Mike

Hello everyone,
I, too, wanted to extend my gratitude to everyone who has been working on this project, as well as to all the community members who have already participated and voted.
Seeking information and engaging with knowledge has become a more diverse experience globally, with sound being among the fastest growing fields. As established digital citizens and new generations coming online are growingly consuming information in a `listening mode`, it seems a good moment in time to be voting for a sound logo for Wikimedia projects, one that can represent us in new ways. Community members, Foundation staff and sound enthusiasts from around the world, have all collaborated to bring us here, and the results are interesting and inspiring.
I have been following the progress of this project closely since its inception, and as a volunteer, was honored to also be involved as part of the selection committee. Along with community members and audio professionals, we have reviewed and scored the top 40 submissions, leading to the top 10 sounds the the community is now voting on. As some of you know, I have a long time passion for music (in all its diversified glory), so I was excited to be able to contribute to this project more substantially. It was a unique experience that I'll cherish for years to come, and I am grateful to the WMF team working on this in a true spirit of openness, transparency and collaboration, as well as to all the volunteers who invested time and effort in the process.
*I encourage you all to have a listen and a say in selecting the sound* *that will represent us* for many years to come. So if you haven't already, I hope you consider participating and vote. One more week to go!
With gratitude, Shani.

Hi all,
A reminder that the sound logo vote https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Sound_Logo_Vote is open until December 19, 23:59 UTC, please play a part in choosing the sound of Wikimedia.
It's been an informative two weeks. There were some glitches along the way and not everyone found the voting process intuitive, yet nearly 2000 people have taken part already. A huge thank you. We knew we would be learning together at every step embarking on this novel project more than a year ago, and especially in the past 10 months or so. Thanks to many of you who contributed along the way, we are humbled and grateful by the support and participation. Once the vote closes and the results have been cleaned up and tallied, there needs to be legal reviews, contracting, and due diligence before the winner is officially announced. We are aiming for late February to April, 2023.
Once again, many thanks on behalf of the sound logo team.
Best regards, Mehrdad

Funny how most of them follow the same sonic structure, but miss the elegance of Windows 95 startup sound done by Brian Eno. https://themusicnetwork.com/the-odd-story-of-how-brian-eno-composed-the-wind... If there is no obvious winner, maybe we can ask to release for wikipedia one of the 83 leftovers ;-)
Look, I'm sorry, but I have to say this. I have not the least idea why WMF is using the resources on this. Was this a priority, or even needed? What does it serve for? And, as someone with hypersensitivity to part of the sound spectrum, I sincerely hope you don't use any of those cacophonic screams or whatever they are in any noticeable place.
I'm really puzzled why this has been done at all.

It's nicely summarised in the Diff post (https://diff.wikimedia.org/2022/12/06/vote-for-the-sound-of-all-human-knowle...):
We’ve been talking about a sound logo for quite some time. Virtual voice assistants are growing in use and popularity around the world. Wikimedia content is everywhere too, but often not correctly or consistently identified. A sound logo is a brief collection of sounds usually between 1 and 4 seconds. Our sound logo will be a new way to identify Wikimedia content across a range of auditory uses and devices.

Hi Kosta! I think Paulo was aware of this process (but not details), but maybe was not super clear in critique around aesthetics (where I agree most submissions are sub-optimal for use) and around priority with resources allocated...
From what I see in the team listing (from N. America and UK), partnering (UK agency folx) and length of project (2 years) it was a fairly costly project with questionable results+method.
If this would have been community initiated project, just planningit and fundraising with WMF would take easily 6 months, with cost bigger than any of the hub pilots so far and it would likely be a misery of work to defend it.
Anyway - what (and how) is done is done.
Would be nice to get non terrible first version of sound logo, as well as some report on resources used and engagement, ideally done under the similar to what community projects of this scale (if they even exist) need to do... No?
Then we can maybe (costly) learn how to do (even) better for the Sound Logo v.2 ;-p
Best - Z. Blace
