I'm in need of a couple of short videos, promoting Wikipedia and its sister projects, to show at an event. It's surprisingly hard to find them!
We have lots of videos in:
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Wikimedia_project_videos
but many, while no doubt useful for their educational content, are not the kind of things to show to a lay audience - either the quality is not high enough, or the content is too specific.
I'm looking for things with impact, like
https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=File%3AOpen_Letter_for_Free_...
Suggestions, please! ~~~~
They are rare because they are not easy to make!

Very true, Andy.
I should mention here that although its not a Wikimedia community video, documentary filmmaker has a really nice clip on a primary school class in Peru which wrote the Wikipedia article for its village. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HOUOnIabrRE Tec de Monterrey had the filmmaker (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michael_Kleiman) present the entire documentary to our campus, but this clip served as inspiration for the Mati Wiki pilot project (http://outreach.wikimedia.org/wiki/Education/Countries/M%C3%A9xico/Tec_de_Mo...) which is going on right now. The project has my campus collaborating with three Mexico City primary schools to create articles and other content related to the "colonias" (official neighborhoods) where the schools are located, with Tec providing technical and other support.
So videos can have an impact!

Also if you want to show an editathon in two minutes, our Wikipedistas de Puebla community produced this HQ cool video:

Dear Andy: our friends of Wikimedia Argentina produced this professional video about What is Wikipedia? with a nice production and a professional actress.
It is also available in Commons with subtitles. I can translate to English if you need.

+1 really inspirational and being in another language just adds to our international feel.

Thank you, I'm not sure that's what I need (because I can't understand it!) but it does lok very good.
Subtitling in English would be a good idea, not least as a service to others wanting to add subsutles in other languages, and who can translate from English.

Dear Andy: our friends of Wikimedia Argentina produced this professional video about What is Wikipedia? with a nice production and a professional actress.
Wikimedia Italia has produced, between 2010 and 2012, these four short videos about Wikipedia, Commons, Wikisource and Wikiquote called "WikiGuide"(s): * http://wiki.wikimedia.it/wiki/WikiGuida_Wikipedia * http://wiki.wikimedia.it/wiki/WikiGuida_Wikimedia_Commons * http://wiki.wikimedia.it/wiki/WikiGuida_Wikisource * http://wiki.wikimedia.it/wiki/WikiGuida_Wikiquote They are available on Commons and on other platforms (Youtube, Vimeo). Subtitles in several languages are already present (at least in English).
The guy starring in the video, Christian Biasco, whilst maybe less... gracious... :P than Mariana [if I recall correctly the name of the actress starring in WM-AR's video], is a professional video producer (he his specialised in educational video). Portions of this videos were used in the help page of the Italian Wikipedia and the other projects.
The storyboard and dialogues were written collaboratively by Christian with the help of users from the projects on his working wiki called "Il Cantiere" ("The Constructiomn Site"), here: http://biasco.ch/wiki/index.php5/WikiGuide

Cristian

(slightly OT) You may be also interested in knowing that WM-IT recently produced also this guide about OSM: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jeG49DxMsvw
It is not yet on Commons, and we are still missing the English subtitles.
(The most careful spectators will notice that most of the interfaces in the video are in English, this was a choice make to make easier to internationalize the video)

Hi Andy and everyone,
I think all the suggestions above are great! (clip from the film 'WEB' by Michael Kleiman that Leigh mentioned above, Commons link below): https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:WEB_Clip.webm
Andy, it's a little bit hard to know what to recommend without knowing the audience you'll be speaking to, but below are things that WMF has produced that I'd recommend:
We produced this as part of a series to function as sort of an 'ice breaker' to explain a few of the main points of Wikipedia very generally to a lay audience. It is closed-captioned in 20+ languages, I have used it and I know many others have when making presentations in the past :
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:The_Impact_Of_Wikipedia.webm https://vimeo.com/54384859 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Knv6D6Thi0
The series from 2012 illustrates a few personal stories of some of our projects: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:The_Impact_of_Wikipedia https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Knv6D6Thi0&list=PLVx9pX-VnGVgaxIOUE2zua...
It was designed to lightly touch on the details of editing Wikimedia projects, without getting too complicated. More, it was made to show how the projects allow people to be creative in the areas they are interested in.
A few I'd recommend for a crowd:
Dumisani Ndubane - talks about Wikiversity: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:The_Impact_of_Wikipedia_Dumisani_Ndu... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tXvhABH-jFs
The late Adrianne Wadewitz talks about Wikipedia in Education: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:The_Impact_of_Wikipedia_Adrianne_Wad... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_qwZ7jL4xyY
Mei Jiun Kwek talks about uploading images of crops to Commons: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:The_Impact_of_Wikipedia_-_Mei_Jiun_K... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zcGotJ927YM
Poongothai Balasubramanian - talks about writing mathematics articles in retirement: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tojUFx6VdNs
Erlan Vega talks about Wiktionary: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:The_Impact_of_Wikipedia_Erlan_Vega.w... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VNZWjJOoG3I
You could also try any of the 4 cuts of 'Knowledge for Everyone' that we shot last year ( http://blog.wikimedia.org/2014/07/28/petition-for-free-access-to-wikipedia-o... ):
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Knowledge_for_Everyone.webm
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Knowledge_for_Everyone_(medium_cut)....
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Knowledge_for_Everyone_(short_cut).w...
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Knowledge_for_Everyone_(short_cut,_n...
Again, it's a little hard to know what might work best without knowing the audience. I hope these are useful!
