Hi,
due to increasing spam rates to the mailing lists, is there a way of
cutting down on the spam we receive and/or the work needed in dealing
with it?
Yes. Auto-reject all mail that comes from non-members. In the
auto-rejection notice, write something like this (example taken from
foundation-l, I know that wikiit-l does something similar):
"Due to a large amount of spam, emails from non-members of this list
are now automatically rejected. If you have a valuable contribution to
the list but would rather not subscribe to it, please sent an email to
foundation-l-owner at
lists.wikimedia.org and we will forward your
post to the list. Please be aware that all messages to this list are
archived and viewable for the public. If you have a confidential
communication to make, please rather email info at
wikimedia.org
Thank you."

Michael
Currently, there is a checkbox saying to "discard
all
messages marked defer" (which is the default) - but I don't think this
actually prevents further postings from the same spammer (correct me
I'm wrong). Marking every message for the 'discard/block combo' takes
increasing amounts of time. What I'm wondering is if it's possible to,
say, "mark all messages as spam", which would do that job for us? Or
can one increase the threshold for potential spam (and is that what
David Gerard did recently on the wikiEN-l list)? Also, I invariably
get the same spam messages sent to my own inbox - is this preventable?
this is because spammers also find your "foolist-owner at
lists.wikimedia.org" adress which redirects to your mailbox. This is
hardly preventable unless you open an extra emailaccount which you use
as owner address (This list is run by...)
Michael
