Is there any way to unsubscribe from these annoying and in my opinion misleading spam mails purporting to come from Jimmy Wales without unsubscribing from any other Wikimedia mailing lists or e-mail notifications?
Cheers,
Peter

Dear Peter,
When the clock strikes midnight, our email fundraiser will end — but we haven't yet hit our goal. Please take one minute to renew your R 50 https://donate.wikimedia.org/?utm_campaign=C1617_Email3&utm_medium=email&appeal=Appeal-JimmyQuote&utm_source=sp52077018&hpc=35.00&uselang=en&contact_id=7476197&link_id=2 donation to Wikipedia.
If all our past donors simply gave again today, we wouldn't have to worry about fundraising for the rest of the year.
We’re a small nonprofit. We’re independent. We don’t run ads or sell services to our readers. Though our size requires us to maintain the server space and programming power of a top site, we are sustained by the support of our donors who give an average of about R 175. This year, will you take one minute to keep our work going?

I'd imagine the unsubscribe link would get you off the "former donors we can spam" list without removing you from this august list.

What is https://www.pages04.net/ ?
WMF has given them a copy of (a subset of..?) the donor email list, as this link has Peter's email address on the page:
https://www.pages04.net/wikimedia/WMFUnsubscribe/Unsubscribe?spMailingID=520...
If you dont want to try that link, the following will give you a general idea of the form donors are being directed to:
https://www.pages04.net/wikimedia/WMFUnsubscribe/
-- John Vandenberg
That link says "Unsubscribe from Wikimedia Email" I am subscribed to a whole lot of email from Wikimedia. I only want to unsubscribe from that specific one. Problem? Vague and unspecific information and suggestion of possible unspecified consequences. Unfortunately this is the kind of language I have come to expect from Jimmy, and why I don't take anything he writes at face value. Cheers, Peter

Hey Peter,
So you can unsubscribe from the fundraising and WMF newsletter emails via that form and you will remain on lists such as Wikimedia-l.
Hope that helps.

And, I presume, password reminders, Wikipedia system emails, talkpage notification emails, incidental invitations for research participation etc? That would at least be the by me expected behaviour.
I guess there's a more accurate description for the unsubscribe link imaginable in that case though :) (for future improvements)

The problem of that page's wording being rather vague and unclear about what, exactly, you'd unsubscribe from is a genuine issue that needs fixin' (that is, while what the intent is would be clear to technically savvy people as illustrated by the responses on this very thread, it clearly needs to be wordsmithed into making more sense).
That said, I'm pretty sure absolutely nobody sane believes Jimmy personally sits down and writes bits of web interface used by fundraising, so the dig at his expense is not only gratuitous, but detracts from any point you were trying to make.

Hi Peter,
I can appreciate that the text on the page seems vague in terms of defining to what list the opt-out will apply. We're going to edit the header on the page to specifically say "Fundraising email". I hope that helps clarify for other donors on multiple Wikimedia lists.
Thanks, Caitlin

Thank you Caitlin, that actually addresses the problem, and I think that will be a significant improvement. It would also be nice if I didn’t have to opt out of something I don’t think I ever opted into. Cheers, Peter

Hi Craig, John,
https://www.pages04.net/wikimedia/WMFUnsubscribe/ is the unsubscribe page hosted by our email service provider. We hope to migrate back to using page hosted in-house (see T99821 https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T99821), however we've found for the time being that using our ESP's page has been the safest way to manage unsubscribes, especially when sending to large groups of people.
The link Peter provided populated his email address because it was tied to his record in our email database. As he pointed out, we send a few emails a year to each past donor, usually across a 1 month period, to prompt renewing their donation. If they fill out that unsubscribe page, they won't receive emails from the Fundraising team again unless they request to be opted back in.
I hope that answers your questions.
Best, Caitlin
