I disagree. We really do not need to know the inner workings and what-not of hirings. Although, I do admit that yours is a valid question, though I do not believe it is for the reason you provided. Not true. Wikimedia projects are communities, and the communities should be allowed to know, for the most part, what goes on within the WMF (there are some exceptions of course, like confidential things, business deals that haven't been announced yet, etc, but I don't see how the process of creating a new position requires confidentiality).
Hoi, For one reason, we want the board to do perform their duties in stead of playing to the galleries. Thanks, GerardM

Hi, I'm new here, so bear with me if this is a faux pas, please..
Who says the board (or the foundation) can't perform their duties if they speak to the community? They don't necessarily need approval on everything they do, but disclosure before-hand would have been nice, no?
That is a reasonable demand IMHO, same as the way all the MediaWiki projects are run at the user level: we know who did what, and we can ask why.
Would people say "mind your own business" if you asked someone to provide citations at Wikipedia? I was very surprised by your reaction.
Cheers, Kyungjoon Lee

Bleh, then don't announce the hire on this list. All I'm asking for is who made the decision. If it was a board decision, I'm not even asking for the names, a simple "board resolution, passed 4 votes to 3" would suffice.
The idea that the community plays any role whatsoever in the running of the Wikimedia foundation is all a ruse if we can't have such basic information.
Frankly I have no idea why this would be kept such a secret.

Noone from the Foundation has replied yet, probably because it's the weekend. Perhaps everyone should just wait until they do instead of arguing in circles with each other.

Ant posted two messages to this list after I asked the question.
However, Erik has now answered it to some extent (idea came from Carolyn, board apparently informally agreed with it).

Also, Stpehen, your point doesn't hold much water. :) The Board is made up of volunteers, meaning, unlike the office staff, they are for much of the weekend as well. :)
And to Anthony, yes, I do believe I said something about this being an area of expertise for the COO.
