Dear all, New Year is near for all places in the world where Gregorian Calendar is active, and in the Basque Wikipedia we want to celebrate 2025 tooting in Mastodon (and tweeting in X and posting on Facebook) one article per each time zone when the New Year arrives. We have been doing this since 2021, and this year the hashtag will be #2025on (on means "good" in Basque). We invite you to copy/adapt this initiative, for some New Year joy and promoting geographical interest.
The articles we have chosen for this #2025on, one per time zone, are:
* Kiritimati - most populous place in Kiribati * Waitangi - the place where the The Treaty of Waitangi WASN'T signed. * South Pole - by convention, the day starts at +12:00 UTC * Wallis and Futuna - First place in France to wave the New Year * Uuzhno-Sakhalinsk - A part of Russia, 1,640 kilometres from Tokyo, but 6,375 from Moscow * Adelaide - The planned capital of the only freely colonized territory in Australia * Jewish Autonomous Province - a remote oblast created for the Russian Jewish community, where Yiddish is oficial but only 0,6% are Jewish. * Aṉangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara - a local goverment area for Aboriginal Australians. * Korean Demilitarized Zone - a stripe between both Koreas, that now have the same time zone (but not always) * Shanghai - The most populous city in the most populous time zone * Java- World's most populous island * Naypyidaw - The planned capital of Myanmar * Chagos Island - where sovereignity disputes have been solved (?) this year * Annapurna - only one winter expedition have reached the top. Basque climber Alex Txikon is there now, but failed. * Sri Lanka - They share with India the second most populous time zone. * Batken region - Where New Year started one hour ago, but Tadjik and Uzbek exclaves have one our difference. * Afghanistan-China border - The largest time-zone difference for an international border * Georgia - lively protests in this end of 2024 * Teheran - capital city of Iran * Istanbul - the only capital city in two continents * Rafah - a city destroyed in 2024 * HAPPY 2025 (for Basque time zone). Did you know that 2025 equals 1^3 + 2^3 + 3^3 + 4^3 + 5^3 + 6^3 + 7^3 + 8^3 + 9^3 or (1+2+3+4+5+6+7+8+9)^2 * Irish Museum of Time - a place for measuring time in Ireland * Rabo de Peixe - a settlement in the Azores, with a TV series based there * South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands - British territory, claimed by Argentina, historically exploited by Norwegians. * Museum of Tomorrow - In Rio de Janeiro * L'Anse au Clair - A place in Labrador where Newfoundland time zone is used * Bermudas - one of the edges of the Bermuda Triangle * Times Square - epicentre of the New Year celebrations * Galapagos - nature wonder in the Pacific Ocean * Boise (Idaho) - this year Basque Festival will happen there * Tijuana - Most populated city in Baja California * Gambier islands - Property of France, named after James Gambier, who survived an accusation of cowardice for his inaction at the Battle of the Basque Roads. * Marquesas - The only place inhabited in their time zone * Deception Islands - Found in the Magellan-Elkano expedition, they didn't find water. However, that's not the origin of the name. * Pago Pago - capital city of American Samoa. * Public Domain Day - Tintin and Popeye
Wishing you all a happy new year,
Galder
