*Hi all,In the latest round of Project Grants, the committee has recommended 11 projects for a total of $354,654 in funding. We received
24
proposals for review. Here’s what we’re funding. [1]Software: four projects funded - ScienceSource https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:Project/ScienceSource: Medical knowledge is accessed over 2 billion times a year on Wikimedia projects, but only a relatively small number of editors create and maintain it. ScienceSource seeks to build an algorithm that will model editor decision-making to identify reliable biomedical reference sources. By
using
machine automation to sift through large volumes of reference materials, ScienceSource will support volunteers to do their work faster and more effectively. [2] - WikiProject X https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:Project/Isarra/WikiProject_X: WikiProject X seeks to create better tools for Wikipedian editors collaborating around common interest areas. Previously funded https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:IEG/WikiProject_X twice through Individual Engagement Grants, the project piloted new features for
several
WikiProjects, including Women in Red https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:WikiProject_Women_in_Red.
This
grant will replace the multiple disparate modules of WikiProject X with a new extension, CollaborationKit. This improvement will offer editors a more seamless, adaptable interface to for productive collaboration. [3][4][5]. - Timeless: Post-deployment support < https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:Project/Isarra/
Timeless:_Post-deployment_support
:
Timeless is a new volunteer-developed skin designed for editors. It was deployed across all Wikimedia projects in 2017, but lacked sufficient support to address bugs. This grant will support general improvements to make Timeless into a more stable and user-friendly product. [6] - WikidataJS https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:Project/WikidataJS: This grant will enable the JavaScript developer community to produce
fast,
high quality tools so others can better access information on Wikidata.
The
project builds on Maxlath https://www.wikidata.org/w/index.php?title=User:Maxlath’s previous creation of several Wikidata-related tools: wikidata-sdk, wikidata-edit, wikidata-cli, wikidata-filter. [7][8]Online organizing: two projects funded - Wiki Loves Monuments international team/2018 coordination < https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:Project/Wiki_
Loves_Monuments_international_team/2018_coordination
:
The international coordination team for Wiki Loves Monuments https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Monuments (WLM) proposes to strengthen the foundation for healthy and sustainable WLM competitions across the world. As the project celebrates its 10th anniversary, its leaders aim to critically rethink the structural
framework
of WLM. This grant will support efforts to gather information from national leaders, collect and share best practices from across the community, facilitate the ongoing integration of WLM into Wikidata, and improve operational processes system-wide. [9][10] - Wikimedia CEE Spring 2018 <https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:Project/Wikimedia_
CEE_Spring_2018
:
This annual international article writing contest generates content from every country and region in Central and Eastern Europe on 30+ Wikipedias. CEE Spring’s remarkable community spirit plays a central role in
fostering
a thriving, collaborative volunteer base in the region. The grant will incentivize content creation focused on closing the gender gap, expanding minority language Wikipedias, and showcasing the cultural heritage of Central and Eastern Europe. [11]Offline outreach: five projects funded - BlackLunchTable/BLT 2018 <https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:Project/BlackLunchTable/BLT_2018 : As an organization, BlackLunchTable <http://www.theblacklunchtable.com/
seeks to create a more truthful and inclusive historical account by inviting people to write the histories of their own culture. In this project, they will host a series of edit-a-thons with the aim of
recruiting
editors of color and women editors to write biographical articles about notable artists of the African diaspora. The project will primarily
focus
on English Wikipedia. [12][13] - Wiki In Africa/Wiki Loves Women 2018 < https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:Project/Wiki_In_
Africa/Wiki_Loves_Women_2018
:
In 2016, Wiki Loves Women http://www.wikiafrica.org/wiki-loves-women/wiki-loves-women/ launched
in
West Africa in an effort to address the content gap about women in
Africa.
This project continues the Wiki Loves Women initiative and expands into
two
new countries in East Africa -- Tanzania and Uganda. The project seeks
to
raise women’s visibility on Wikipedia, create structural supports for the development of Wikimedia groups, and encourage women’s participation as leaders, partners, and editors. [14][15] - New Zealand Wikipedian at
Large
Zealand_Wikipedian_at_Large
:
Through a series of short residencies with multiple institutions, Giantflightlessbirds https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/User:Giantflightlessbirds will
leverage
his expertise as a museum curator to establish a networked community of GLAM contributors in New Zealand. Through training and support
activities,
he aims to generate continued long-term contributions to Wikipedia,

and Wikidata. [16][17] - Wiki loves Rural Areas - Bimenes < https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:Project/Wiki_
loves_Rural_Areas_-_Bimenes
:
In August 2017, Asturian Wikipedians celebrated 50,000 articles in the rural area of Bimenes, Spain. This project expands on previous community engagement work done in this rural municipality to continue improving Asturian-language content. This will be done through partnerships with multiple cultural institutions, coordination of image donations, and
direct
training with local residents with a particular focus on encouraging participation by women. [18] - Outreach in Northern Nigeria < https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:Project/Outreach_
in_Northern_Nigeria
:
The Hausa Wikipedia is one of the smallest Wikipedias, in terms of the quantity of articles per speaker, yet Hausa is spoken by large
populations
in Northern Nigeria, Southern Niger, and other parts of West and Central Africa. This proposal aims to encourage the development of Wikimedia projects for Hausa Wikipedia in Northern Nigeria by organizing workshops
in
the cities of Kaduna and Kano, by engaging in long-term institutional partnerships at large universities in those cities, and by translating
help
and support materials for new editors in Hausa. [19]On June 14, we will host a Project Showcase https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rFjo8wg4wKw
for
new grantees to talk about their projects. All are welcome to attend
this
publicly streamed event. A recording will be available afterward. We encourage MediaWiki developers, communication specialists, project managers, community liaisons, Wikimedia Foundation staff to attend.

Hi everyone,
As you may know, we recently funded 11 projects through Wikimedia Foundation Project Grants program, initiatives that span from software development, to online organizing, and offline outreach. In an effort to increase awareness about these projects, and foster collaboration and participation, we are hosting the first ever Wikimedia Project Showcase this coming Thursday, June 13, at 9 am PST (1600 UTC).
You can join the showcase in one of two ways:
- Join the video conference room using BlueJeans:

*Hi all,In the latest round of Project Grants, the committee has recommended 11 projects for a total of $354,654 in funding. We
received 24
proposals for review. Here’s what we’re funding. [1]Software: four projects funded - ScienceSource https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:Project/ScienceSource:
Medical
knowledge is accessed over 2 billion times a year on Wikimedia
projects,
but only a relatively small number of editors create and maintain it. ScienceSource seeks to build an algorithm that will model editor decision-making to identify reliable biomedical reference sources. By
using
machine automation to sift through large volumes of reference
materials,
ScienceSource will support volunteers to do their work faster and more effectively. [2] - WikiProject X https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:Project/Isarra/WikiProject_X: WikiProject X seeks to create better tools for Wikipedian editors collaborating around common interest areas. Previously funded https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:IEG/WikiProject_X twice
through
Individual Engagement Grants, the project piloted new features for
several
WikiProjects, including Women in Red https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:WikiProject_Women_in_Red.
This
grant will replace the multiple disparate modules of WikiProject X
with a
new extension, CollaborationKit. This improvement will offer editors a more seamless, adaptable interface to for productive collaboration. [3][4][5]. - Timeless: Post-deployment support <
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:Project/Isarra/Timeless:_Post-deploym...
:
Timeless is a new volunteer-developed skin designed for editors. It
was
deployed across all Wikimedia projects in 2017, but lacked sufficient support to address bugs. This grant will support general improvements
to
make Timeless into a more stable and user-friendly product. [6] - WikidataJS <https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:Project/WikidataJS : This grant will enable the JavaScript developer community to produce
fast,
high quality tools so others can better access information on
Wikidata. The
project builds on Maxlath https://www.wikidata.org/w/index.php?title=User:Maxlath’s previous creation of several Wikidata-related tools: wikidata-sdk,
wikidata-edit,
wikidata-cli, wikidata-filter. [7][8]Online organizing: two projects funded - Wiki Loves Monuments international team/2018 coordination <
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:Project/Wiki_Loves_Monuments_internat...
:
The international coordination team for Wiki Loves Monuments https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Monuments
(WLM)
proposes to strengthen the foundation for healthy and sustainable WLM competitions across the world.
[9][10] - Wikimedia CEE
Spring
2018 <
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:Project/Wikimedia_CEE_Spring_2018
:
This annual international article writing contest generates content
from
every country and region in Central and Eastern Europe on 30+
Wikipedias.
CEE Spring’s remarkable community spirit plays a central role in
fostering
a thriving, collaborative volunteer base in the region. The grant will incentivize content creation focused on closing the gender gap,
expanding
minority language Wikipedias, and showcasing the cultural heritage of Central and Eastern Europe. [11]Offline outreach: five projects funded
BlackLunchTable/BLT 2018 <
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:Project/BlackLunchTable/BLT_2018
: As an organization, BlackLunchTable <
http://www.theblacklunchtable.com/%3E
seeks to create a more truthful and inclusive historical account by inviting people to write the histories of their own culture. In this project, they will host a series of edit-a-thons with the aim of
recruiting
editors of color and women editors to write biographical articles about notable artists of the African diaspora. The project will primarily
focus
on English Wikipedia. [12][13] - Wiki In Africa/Wiki Loves Women 2018 <
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:Project/Wiki_In_Africa/Wiki_Loves_Wom...
:
In 2016, Wiki Loves Women http://www.wikiafrica.org/wiki-loves-women/wiki-loves-women/
launched in
West Africa in an effort to address the content gap about women in
Africa.
This project continues the Wiki Loves Women initiative and expands
into two
new countries in East Africa -- Tanzania and Uganda. The project
seeks to
raise women’s visibility on Wikipedia, create structural supports for
the
development of Wikimedia groups, and encourage women’s participation as leaders, partners, and editors. [14][15] - New Zealand Wikipedian at
Large
<
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:Project/New_Zealand_Wikipedian_at_Lar...
:
Through a series of short residencies with multiple institutions, Giantflightlessbirds https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/User:Giantflightlessbirds will
leverage
his expertise as a museum curator to establish a networked community of GLAM contributors in New Zealand. Through training and support
activities,
he aims to generate continued long-term contributions to Wikipedia,
Commons
and Wikidata. [16][17] - Wiki loves Rural Areas - Bimenes <
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:Project/Wiki_loves_Rural_Areas_-_Bime...
:
In August 2017, Asturian Wikipedians celebrated 50,000 articles in the rural area of Bimenes, Spain. This project expands on previous
community
engagement work done in this rural municipality to continue improving Asturian-language content. This will be done through partnerships with multiple cultural institutions, coordination of image donations, and
direct
training with local residents with a particular focus on encouraging participation by women. [18] - Outreach in Northern Nigeria <
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:Project/Outreach_in_Northern_Nigeria
:
The Hausa Wikipedia is one of the smallest Wikipedias, in terms of the quantity of articles per speaker, yet Hausa is spoken by large
populations
in Northern Nigeria, Southern Niger, and other parts of West and
Central
Africa. This proposal aims to encourage the development of Wikimedia projects for Hausa Wikipedia in Northern Nigeria by organizing
workshops in
the cities of Kaduna and Kano, by engaging in long-term institutional partnerships at large universities in those cities, and by translating
help
and support materials for new editors in Hausa.
[20]The
open call for Project Grants 2018 Round Two https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:Project will launch on
November
1, 2018, with applications due November 30, 2018. [21]We are seeking new candidates for the Project Grants Committee. If you or someone you
know
might be interested in serving on the committee, please contact projectgrants {{at}} wikimedia.org http://wikimedia.org with
questions
or see our committee eligibility page on Meta <
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:Project/Quarterly/Committee#committee...

In particular, we are seeking reviewers at this time with expertise relevant to the 2017 Strategic focus areas https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Strategy/Wikimedia_movement/2017: knowledge as a service and knowledge equity.
