I was recently reading an article about non-profits that discussed
internal disagreements. It said (more or less), that a Board should
appear cohesive and act as one voice, even when it isn't behind-the-
scenes. This leak ruins any sense of cohesiveness.
I don't think one article's suggestions can be prescriptive for every
non-profit out there. WMF is an entity born of the Internet, and net
denizens are much more used to transparent discussion and arguing out in
the open than older-style foundations. Additionally, since most of us
are volunteers, the whole "no leaks" thing is difficult to enforce
(whereas in a normal corporation, people do not reveal confidential
details for fear of being fired). Best just to be honest with everyone.
