Hello everyone,
I am pleased to announce the Steward Elections 2024 [1]. We are now taking
nominations from eligible candidates (administrators at any Wikimedia
projects are eligible; functionary and/or crosswiki patrolling experience
is welcomed).
Interested candidates can verify their eligibility and submit their
nomination via the guidelines page [2]. We are open to candidate
submissions until January 30, 2024, 23:59 (UTC).
Please remember, the voting has not yet begun (and it will not until
February 06, 2024, 14:00 UTC). We will remind you when the voting starts.
As always, the confirmations of the existing stewards [3] will take place
at the same time as the elections.
If you have any questions regarding the steward elections, please feel free
to contact me or any other member of the Election Committee [4]. You can
ask any question in the #wikimedia-stewards-elections-chat IRC channel as
well, or watch updates in #wikimedia-stewards-elections.
Best regards,
Martin Urbanec

Good day, colleagues!
Our user group aimed to enreach content on North-West Russia have published a new activity report for 2023. Link is here: https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/North-West_Russia_Wiki-Historians_User_Grou… report is available in Russian and English.
In 2023 we faced the same challenges that in were present in 2022: overall pressure of Russian government on Wikimedia movement made some editors abandon their work in Wikimedia projects, or, at least, stop coming to our offline events. Also financial situation of most of our participants became worse, so as long as we can’t rely on some kind of outside financing we also can’t afford long expeditions by ourselves anymore. Anyway, I’m glad we’ve made this far and I hope that situation in Russia will eventually get better in 2024.

My Fellow Wikimedians!
Greetings from the ESEAP Conference 2024 Organising Committee!
We are delighted to invite you to submit a program proposal for the ESEAP
Conference 2024, the third regional conference for Wikimedia communities
throughout the East, Southeast Asia, and the Pacific region. The conference
will take place in Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia in May 2024. The theme for the
conference is *"Collaboration beyond the Horizon*".
The ESEAP Conference 2024 aims to connect people of the Wikimedia movement
within the ESEAP region, to share ideas, and to build regional
collaborations. We welcome program proposals from all Wikimedia
contributors, affiliates, partners, and allies, regardless of their
geographical location. You can find more information about the conference
and the program submission guidelines at
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/ESEAP_Conference_2024/Submissions.
We understand that not everyone can travel to Malaysia due to various
reasons, such as health, budget constraints or lessening the carbon
footprint. Therefore, we offer the option of presenting your program via
video conference or pre-recorded message. You can also delegate some tasks
to a physical participant in the conference, such as facilitating group
discussion or distributing the handouts. We will provide the necessary
technical support and guidance to ensure the quality and accessibility of
your presentation.
The deadline for submitting your program proposal is Wednesday, *January
31, 2024*. Please use the online submission form to submit your proposal.
The program committee will review all proposals and notify the acceptance
status.
We hope you will consider this opportunity and share your valuable insights
and experiences with the ESEAP community. If you have any questions or
concerns, please feel free to contact us at persidangan(a)wikimedia.org.my.
Thank you for your interest and support. We look forward to hearing from
you soon.

Sincerely,
*Butch Bustria*

Greetings everyone,
I am delighted to announce the first edition of *"Wiki Loves Muslim
Academia <https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wiki_Loves_Muslim_Academia>",* a
new Wiki Loves Campaign, which aims to help document knowledge related to
global Muslim academia across Wikipedia projects.
For the first edition, *Wiki Loves Muslim Academia 2024*
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wiki_Loves_Muslim_Academia_2024>, we limit
ourselves to organising the campaign on Indic-language Wikis and the
English Wikipedia only, to take better care of on-wiki policies subject to
absence of a lot of helping people and teams.
We have compiled a set of instructions and other pages on the Meta-Wiki and
look forward to seeing Indian volunteers *contribute between 15 January and
16 February 2024! *The scope of the campaign has been highlighted on this
page <https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wiki_Loves_Muslim_Academia_2024/Scope>
.
Should you have any questions, please let me know.
Best regards,
Aafi
Dear wikimedians,
In the last four years the Basque Wikimedians User Group has been working on improving Basque Wikipedia with students, teachers and, logically, wikimedians. It has been the largest project made in the last seven years by our user group. Today we are starting a new path for the future, so we have made this report trying to summarize what we have achieved: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Memoria_2020-2023.pdf<https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Memoria_2020-2023.pdf>
This project would be impossible without the help many of you have provided. From learning paths to tools, from ideas to content, a wikimedian never walks alone. I want to thank everyone who have been with us in this path for your help.
We continue, but sometimes it's a good idea to see what we have done, so we can go further.
Thanks
Galder Gonzalez

On the Dutch Wikipedia we give users a barnster with their 5th, 10th, 15th,
and 20th anniversary. Is there a tool or query to get a list of active
users that did their first edits 5/10/15/20 years ago?
I searched for a tool/etc, but did not find one.
Thanks!
Romaine
Dear Wikimedians,
2023 has been a hectic year for Wikimedia Community User Group Türkiye and
the people of Türkiye. On the one hand there was a huge disaster and pain
at the beginning of the year; on the other hand there were celebrations
during the entire year for the centenary of the Turkish Republic; the
parliamentary and presidential elections were also held in 2023. In this
atmosphere wikimedians in the country felt utmost responsibility for
fighting against misinformation/disinformation; did their best in their
wiki contributions and presented their work as a tribute to the centenary
of the Republic. Please find the annual report of the Wikimedia User Group
Türkiye here:

Hi everyone,
A community letter to the Regional Committee and the program officer of
the Latin America and Caribbean region has been published.
While it is limited to the irregularities presented in the region along
with potential solutions, I hope this is an important step in seeking
the change we desire in the Wikimedia movement regarding how funds are
distributed.

I would be grateful if you could share the letter and even provide
translations of it. If you agree with the content you can even sign it.
Best,
