FYI, I asked WMF Communication Team about any plans of using Mastodon in future.
Here is their response [1] "The Digital Communications team has been researching Mastodon and considering our potential involvement with the platform in the future. At this time, we have no plans to create an account for the Foundation or Wikipedia. This is mainly because our observations show us that Mastodon is not yet reaching a large audience, which is one of the key objectives of our communications activity on social media. We will continue to monitor the situation and adjust our recommendations and practices to keep within our objectives."

Dear Wikimedians!
I’m Danny <https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/User:Danny_Benjafield_(WMDE)>
and I am delighted to join Wikimedia Deutschland as a Community
Communications Manager for the Wikidata for Wikimedia Projects team.
Since its inception, Wikidata has been invaluable in reducing the workload
and maintenance of countless projects across many languages and as it has
grown, the demands on the Wikidata team have increased.
The establishment of this new team will translate to additional dedicated
staff to develop and champion that initial goal of Wikidata: promoting the
integration of Wikidata into the Wikimedia Projects!
My role as Community Communications Manager is to connect with editors,
engage with communities, promote collaboration with developers, foster and
encourage the integration of Wikidata with your projects.
Progress only happens with your input!
Communication and community-centric development are guiding principles to
Wikimedia Deutschland and our team exists to help you get the most out of
Wikidata for your project.
To that end, we will soon be asking for your feedback, requests and
starting conversations about how your project can benefit from Wikidata
integration!
I just wanted to say hello and am eager to connect with you in the coming
months, whether in person or virtually at Meetups, or drop me a message at
my Talk <https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/User:Danny_Benjafield_(WMDE)> page
or an email at:

Hello everybody,
we are pleased to announce that Wikifunctions is up and running at
http://www.wikifunctions.org/
After a few days in read-only, the website now has some limited
functionality for you to try out. Thank you to everyone who helped deploy
our first new Wikimedia project in over 12 years!
All logged-in users are able to create and edit talk pages, project pages,
help pages, call functions, etc. Only contributors with a special role will
be able to edit Objects in Wikifunctions (i.e. creating and maintaining
Functions, Tests, Implementations, etc.), for the first few weeks.
We set up a page on Wikifunctions where contributors can request this role
[1] - this will be assigned slowly at first, and ramped-up soon after, if
all goes well. The reason for this gradual roll-out is to decrease the
chance that things break too badly.
There are introductory details about the project in our latest Newsletter,
also available on the Diff blog:
*
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:MyLanguage/Abstract_Wikipedia/Updat…
* https://diff.wikimedia.org/2023/08/07/wikifunctions-is-starting-up/
Please be aware that there might be minor and major bugs and/or missing
documentation, so please join the Project chat page to let us know about
any problems you find.
If you'd like to help, we are particularly looking for people who can help
with translations on translatewiki.net. [2] That would be awesome!
Enjoy editing!

Dear all,
The WMF appears to have made contradictory statements about the Wikimedia
Endowment. Earlier this week, Rai 3, a channel of the Italian national
broadcaster, aired a program about Wikimedia and Wikipedia.[1] On their
website, they also link to responses the WMF gave to various questions the
programme makers asked.[2]
One of these questions concerned the Endowment. I quote:
*Q: The Endowment has reached $33 million and passed them reaching $100
million today. Why the Wikimedia Foundation didn’t move it to a separate
501e3 entity? Being entrusted into the Tides Foundation is not available to
the public any financial report about Wikipedia Endowment. Don't you think
there is a lack of information and transparency about a fund that is
created through worldwide donations? *
*A: Your information is incorrect. The Wikimedia Endowment was established
as a separate entity and received its 501(c)(3) nonprofit status in 2022
following a 2021 board resolution. *
This answer was given to Rai in November 2022. Now I do recall an October
2022 blog post from the WMF reporting that the WMF's application for a
501(c)(3) non-profit had received approval and that the WMF was "in the
process of setting up the Endowment's strategic and operational policies
and systems".[3]
Has the money actually been moved from the Tides Foundation to this new
501(c)(3)?
At the time of writing, the Endowment website continues to tell its readers
that the funds are held and administered by the Tides Foundation.[4]
Is the information on the Endowment website obsolete?[5] If it isn't, and
the money is still with Tides, wasn't the answer given to Rai last November
substantially misleading?

*Tl;dr:* Are you from Africa and looking for other opportunities to
contribute your knowledge and skills to Wikimedia or learn how to make
valuable contributions to Wikipedia? Join the Africa Growth Project Pilot
on WikiLearn to grasp the basics of contributing to Wikipedia and explore
the various contribution options within the movement! Applications are
accepted from August 4 - 16, 2023
<https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSd_RMweV7xPQmkuFgRc2bRq8Z1i35bC8wC…>
.
Dear Wikimedians,
About a month ago, the Wikimedia Foundation announced the idea of an Africa
Growth Project and initiated a curriculum consultation
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:MyLanguage/Africa_Growth_Pilot/Live…>
which concluded on 21 July 2023. The pilot project, as highlighted in the
original email, seeks to enhance community efforts by creating a more
effective online learning experience to improve the retention of new
volunteers.
Why the Africa Growth Project?
Investing in community capacity has been emphasized in various discussions
within the Movement. These needs have been explicitly outlined in the
Movement Strategy and, more importantly, the recent request for help with
editor growth and retention from the communities in sub-Saharan Africa.
The Africa Growth Project is a pilot that aims to experiment with a course
to provide a strong foundation in Wikipedia policies and collaboration
norms, closely guided by our hypothesis of providing high-quality
structured training to new and existing Wikimedians covering the basics of
contribution to Wikimedia (including introducing the many ways to
contribute beyond article writing) can double the retention rates of active
editors in the region.
What can I expect?
The program will consist of a 4-week online learning experience in
September. It will prepare participants to understand the fundamentals of
contributing to Wikimedia and the range of contribution options available
within the movement. For the initial iteration of this project, the course
will only be offered in English. We intend to expand to other languages in
the future if the piloted approach proves successful.
Participants will leave the course with:
-
Basic familiarity with the Wikimedia landscape
-
Awareness of the many different contribution options available to
volunteers, over and beyond writing encyclopedia articles
-
The ability to write in an encyclopedic tone and grasp the concept of a
neutral point of view
-
Understanding of reliable sources, referencing them, and the concept of
"verifiability, not truth".
Who is eligible?
We invite all Africans, both experienced and new, who have an interest in
developing or refreshing a clear understanding of the basics of
contributing to Wikimedia and exploring the opportunities that exist for
them in the Wikimedia volunteer journey.
Only* 150 slots are available*, selection will be based on the level of
interest shown in the response, and users with accounts that are 6 months
old or older will have an advantage.
Applications are open from 4 - 16 August 2023
<https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSd_RMweV7xPQmkuFgRc2bRq8Z1i35bC8wC…>,
and you can apply by completing the attached form
<https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSd_RMweV7xPQmkuFgRc2bRq8Z1i35bC8wC…>
before the deadline. If you wish to learn more, join us (in person or
online) at our session at Wikimania on August 17 at 2:20 UTC

Hi everyone,
Thanks for surfacing this discussion. I want to share some broader context
from the WMF side as the person who manages our partnership with Google
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Overview_of_Wikimedia_Foundation_and_Google…>.
Hopefully it will provide clarity on how we do (and do not) work with them.
I've written more info specific to this situation below, but the tl;dr is
that our partnership does not aim to make Wikipedia or other Wikimedia
content the top search result on Google's products - that decision is
wholly made by Google. The aim of our partnership is to work with Google to
identify and implement ways they can better support Wikimedia communities,
increase content creation, and help connect people with knowledge globally.
As mentioned previously in this thread
<https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T325607>, this particular situation
seemingly needs to be resolved on our platform, not on Google's. That said,
we (WMF's Partnerships team) have explained the importance of this issue to
Google, and their Indexing team is going to do some analysis to provide us
with any insights they are allowed to share about what the specific issues
may be. We've surfaced this not just with regards to Wikisource, but with
past scenarios where Wikimedians have flagged similar issues with some
language Wikipedia projects.
WMF does not decide what Google indexes or where Wikimedia content ranks in
Google Search, nor does Google disclose specific details about how the
results are chosen beyond what is publicly available
<https://developers.google.com/search?card=developer>. This is to maintain
neutrality and not privilege any partners or sites over others.
We will continue working with Google to put together as much information as
possible to inform the path forward, while also underscoring the importance
of Wikisource and its visibility. We also encourage the Sister Projects
Taskforce
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Foundation_Community_Affairs_Comm…>
to continue flagging this and other issues where we can find ways to
collaborate in our goal of supporting all of the Wikimedia projects.
Feel free to reach out to me or partnerships(a)wikimedia.org if you have
questions about any of this.
