Hello Librarians and library lovers,
(Sorry for cross posting)
>From May 15th to June 5th 2021, we will be joining together once again to
continue providing reliable and factual information to the world through
Wikipedia and the #1lib1ref campaign. To participate is easy, simply add a
citation to Wikipedia!![1]
*May Experiments *
This May we are focused on:
-
growing the campaign in East and South East Asia with local affiliates
-- if you want to help contact Venus Lui via (vlui-ctr(a)wikimedia.org) or
me.
-
working closely with AfLIA to sustain our relationship with the
Librarians network in Africa. Last year the participation from African
Librarians was overwhelming, recording about 84% of the total numbers of
edits attained (33,257). This surged our campaign to a staggering increase
of 394%YoY for the May campaign.[2]
-
Supporting our long standing partner for the campaign, IFLA as they
explore citations on Wikidata [3][4]
How can you engage?
We invite you to engage in three ways:
-
Make an edit - Participate globally and virtually by adding citations to
Wikipedia.[5]
-
Organise - Lead a community activity or event in your library, country
or region.[6]
-
Amplify - Share and just keep sharing the campaign within your networks
and help us reach out to library and research communities around the
world.[7]
Join local events or editathons
If you are organising an activity virtually or providing a space to teach
or train people with an interest in the campaign, please add your event(s)
here.[8] In light of the pandemic, we strongly encourage virtual activities
and advise everyone to follow the WHO health guidelines.[9] If restrictions
have been lifted in your country and are considering organising in-person
events, kindly follow the Wikimedia COVID risk assessment for events.[10]
Ensure all your contributions are recorded by using the #1Lib1Ref hashtag
in your edit summary! Add your activity to the campaign dashboard to help
us track the activities happening across the globe.[11] This is very
important for us to monitor the reach and success of the initiative.
Learn more in our office hour
Join the next campaigns office hour on Thursday 13th May at 3:00pm UTC,
where we will share about strategies in Asia and Africa, under the
theme “exploring
regional or thematic approaches to campaigns in tackling topics of interest
”.[12]
Please tell your library, researcher and knowledge-loving friends about
#1Lib1Ref in May. We need everyone's help to make Wikipedia more reliable!
You can join the 1Lib1Ref community via the Libraries (
libraries(a)lists.wikimedia.org), and 1Lib1Ref (1lib1ref(a)lists.wikimedia.org)
mailing lists, or by joining the Wikimedia + Libraries User Group.[13]
Cheers,
Felix Nartey

Dear Wikimedians,
I am writing this email to invite you all to the third regional education
meeting[1]. This month we are meeting with our community members based in
the South Asia region[2]. You can use these regional office hours as an
opportunity to learn and share your projects, tools, or ideas with the
education community from the region.
These regional education meetings are planned by the community specialists
of the EduWiki Outreach Collaborators (EWOC)[3] and the Education team. We
are using this as an opportunity to strengthen the EduWiki network, explore
collaboration opportunities, and identify common practices or challenges
that are faced by our community members in different regions of the world.
We are launching these regional office hours as a pilot initiative to
complement our general monthly office hours[4], we encourage you to
participate, share your ideas, and help this become a fully community-led
initiative.
Our first South Asia regional education meeting will take place on *30th
April 2021 at **9:30 UTC*, (3:00 PM IST, Colombo Time, 3:30 PM Dhaka Time,
3:15 PM Kathmandu Time), it will be led by Md. Galib, a member of Wikimedia
Bangladesh, and EWOC community specialist for the region. *If you want to
volunteer to interpret this meeting for your community members in a local
language, please reach out to me.*
At this South Asia regional education meeting, we will hear from:
-
Challenges with education in Covid 19: Is there any way to overcome?,
Prof. Mostafa Azad, Country representative of CC Bangladesh, Dean, School
of Business, Bangladesh Open University

Dear Wikimedians,
[Please, excuse the cross-posting!]
We know how crucial media and information literacy skills are in today's
world and we see the opportunities in the use of Wikipedia as a pedagogical
tool. So how can we continue to support educators to integrate Wikipedia
into their classrooms to foster these skills?
Last year, the Education team at the Wikimedia Foundation launched the Reading
Wikipedia in the Classroom
<https://wikimediafoundation.org/our-work/education/reading-wikipedia-in-the…>
program in 3 pilot countries: Bolivia, Morocco, and the Philippines. We
worked with local coordinators from the Wikimedia affiliates in each
country to provide an online professional development opportunity to close
to 1000 secondary school teachers
<https://diff.wikimedia.org/2020/12/10/nearly-1000-teachers-participate-in-r…>
with a localized curriculum
<https://diff.wikimedia.org/2021/04/02/a-three-module-teachers-guide-about-r…>
that aligns Wikipedia with UNESCO’s Media and Information Literacy
framework.
We would like to invite you to an open meeting where the Education team and
the pilot’s local coordinators will share the experiences of the program:
the curriculum design, the methodology, the impact, and the next steps for
you to get involved!
You can join us on one of these two dates via Zoom:
-
Thursday, May 6, 13:00 UTC (link to join:
https://wikimedia.zoom.us/j/93678353815)
-
Friday, May 7, 17:00 UTC (link to join:
https://wikimedia.zoom.us/j/99326961118)
We are eager to share our learnings with you and to continue working
towards a critical inclusion of Wikipedia in education. In the meantime,
you can explore the teacher's guides and booklets developed for the program
available on Wikimedia Commons
<https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Reading_Wikipedia_in_the_classr…>
.
Please, don’t hesitate to contact me with any questions or doubts you might
have (or if you need an invite to the event for your personal calendar).
¡Gracias!

Dear Bodhisattwa,
Could I ask you to please keep us up to date on the further Wikimedia
response to your request?
I would love to hear about anything good that is happening as a result of
your having asked here – and if nothing useful is happening, I would love
to hear about that too – here or by private email, if you prefer.
I am very aware that the WMF ran its first fundraising campaign in India
this fiscal year, and that one of the fundraising banner messages asked
people ... "to donate. Show the volunteers who bring you reliable neutral
information that their work matters."[1]
And as you can read in my other post today, it's not like the Wikimedia
Foundation is poor.
Be safe.

Dear Wikimedians,
We (the community resources team at the Wikimedia Foundation) have been in
contact with colleagues from the Wikimedia movement in India and wanted to
share some of the preliminary outcomes of our discussions.
Firstly, we want to acknowledge the disastrous effect COVID-19 has had on
Wikimedia communities and its members across the movement. The COVID-19
pandemic has affected many of us in both direct and indirect ways.
As has been noted by others on this email chain, we all agree that
Wikimedia volunteers are the most valuable assets of our movement. As
mentioned in the previous email, providing insurance support to Wikimedia
volunteers in India would not have been possible due to regulatory and
legal challenges. However, we are committed to provide other help and
service to ensure that the movement is supported.
As discussed on this chain, we feel that our partners are the best placed
to understand the needs locally and regionally. We are therefore working
with colleagues from India directly to provide practical help and support
to the movement there including access to vaccines, PPE kits, disseminating
knowledge and fighting misinformation. We will continue to partner with
them and others to establish criteria in line with our mission to support
the communities. These are exceptional times, indeed but together we will
be able to make a difference and support each other.
For any questions about this initiative please feel free to contact:
communityresources(a)wikimedia.org
Regards,
On behalf of Community Resources Team,
Tanveer Hasan

Hello,
TLDR: Mailman3 is now available for general use, all mailing lists will be
migrated in the next couple of weeks, providing everyone with a much better
mailing list experience. You will notice some changes, let us know if you
run into issues.
Long version:
We're happy to announce that Mailman3 is available for general use and some
have already been migrated. You can find the current mailing lists that
have been migrated at [1] and their archives in "hyperkitty"[2].
Mailman3 is a full rewrite of our previous mailing list software
(Mailman2), and the migration is long overdue. Some key new features that
we want to highlight:
* One user account (no more monthly password reminder emails or list
passwords)
* Ability to search through archives
* Posting through a web interface
* A web interface that doesn't look like its from the early 2000s
* Better security of accounts and messages
The first mailing list migrated was LGBT@ and you can see its mailing list
page in [3]. We are going to slowly migrate the rest of mailing lists (all
+700 of them), you can track the work in [4]. All new mailing lists from
now on will be only on Mailman3.
This means:
* We will send an email to admins of any mailing list right before
starting the upgrade process, and once it's finished.
* The link to subscribe to lists will change, please update your wiki
pages, documentation, etc. We will provide redirects though.
* Links to old archives for public mailing lists won't break. It will
stay at it is now and will become redirects shortly. But URLs of archived
emails of private mailing lists will break. This is necessary for improving
security of mailing lists. Keep it in mind that in the new system you can
easily search in the archives.
Given that in Mailman3, you can simply have one central account for all of
your mailing lists. We highly encourage you to make one [1], that way, you
can easily control what mailing lists you are subscribed to, easily join
new mailing lists and much more. This also makes administrating and
moderating mailing lists much easier.
If you have any questions or you encounter any issues, let us know! You can
create a Phabricator ticket ("Wikimedia-Mailing-lists" project) or ping us
on IRC in #wikimedia-tech.
We hope that Mailman3 brings much needed love to our mailing lists without
breaking your workflows (like reading mails by piping telnet into less or
something like that).

new york university (nyu) libraries, the nyu institute of african american affairs & center for black visual culture (iaaa/cbvc) and afrocrowd are coming together to bring attention to black culture and the african diaspora on wikimedia platforms.
the event is inspired by iconic 1970s nyc radio show soul of reason, which centered on african american affairs and culture, and was hosted by new york university's dr. roscoe c. brown jr. participants will receive free training in wikipedia, wikidata, and wikimedia commons. this virtual event takes place on zoom and is free and open to all. please register below for your link.

more on the soul of reason radio show: soul of reason was a half-hour radio show that aired from 1971-1986 on both the commercial radio station wnbc and the university’s radio station, wnyu. the show’s host, dr. roscoe c. brown, jr., was director of the institute of afro-american (now african american) affairs at new york university at the time. soul of reason showcased unique and vital conversations with leaders, politicians, writers, activists, and artists of african descent in new york city during the civil rights and black power and arts movements. recordings of soul of reason episodes that aired between 1971-1978 are part of the records of the institute of african american affairs in nyu special collections.
following two community transcribe-a-thons held in 2020 to edit transcripts of soul of reason, this virtual wiki edit-a-thon is another chance to listen to the episodes and read the transcripts, this time while enriching information about the show and its subjects in wiki platforms.

*Dear All, *
*Wikimedia Taiwan has a great news to share with all of you! *
*We are so happy to announced that the two of Taiwan's indigenous
languages, the Atayal Wikipedia and Seediq Wikipedia are officially online!
In 2015, the Taiwan Ministry of Education launched the Indigenous languages
Wikipedia project. Sakizaya Wikipedia was the first language release their
Wikipedia in 2019. On April 15, 2021, Hitay-Payan and Lituk Teymu, who are
another two languages Wikipedia project convener were happy to announce
that Atayal Wikipedia and Seediq Wikipedia were online.Since November 22,
2019, the release day of Sakizaya Wikipedia, there have been 1,840 clauses
added. The Wikimedia Taiwan and the Center for aboriginal studies of NCCU
joined the Sakizaya Wikipedia workshop hosted by Sakizaya language
organization on March 11-12, 2021 at the Hualien City. During the workshop,
we taught Sakizaya people how to migrate Chinese modules into Sakizaya, and
they translated all of them into Sakizaya. There are 50 pictures from
Wikimedia Commons was enhanced by Sakizaya and over 100 Wikidata item and
properties were translated into Sakizaya. Moreover, the Sakizaya hashtag
"szy" for other Wikipedia sister projects was ready as well. *
*Atayal Wikipedia and Seediq Wikipedia were released on March 16, 2021,
including the previous Sakizaya language, these are the 3 languages which
first included in Wikipedia, there are in total 16 indigenous languages
recognized as aboriginal by the Council of Indigenous People, Taiwan. The
new Wikimedia language hashtag for Atayal (tay) and Seediq (trv) not only
expanded the usability within Wikipedia but also between other Wiki
projects, such as Wikimedia Common and Wikidata. We are happy to preserve,
promote and reuse Taiwan's indigenous languages through the release of the
Wikimedia project, this is an milestone for all of us. We hope to assist
all Indigenous continue finding ways to preserve their legacy and bring
their languages and culture to the world. Check out our meta-wiki page:
