Dear Wikimedians,
I would like to share to you a statement:
*Joint Statement of the * *ESEAP Wikimania Organizing Team * *and Wikimania
Steering Committee * *on COVID-19*
12 March 2020
The ESEAP Wikimania Organizing Team, Wikimania Steering Committee and the
Wikimedia Foundation acknowledge the current COVID-19 threat
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2019%E2%80%9320_coronavirus_pandemic> and
are taking this situation seriously.
A joint decision on the fate of Wikimania 2020 based on a careful risk
assessment will be forthcoming and we ask for your patience.
Thank you.
Kind regards,
Butch Bustria
Head of the Communications Committee
ESEAP Wikimania Organizing Team
It looks like this list was skipped in providing an update in asking for
feedback (or I missed something - in which case, my apologies). I'm just a
random passer by who was wondering why this wasn't shared yet.
The Wikimedia branding process seems to have moved to yet another phase on
March 1 (I think?), allowing for a feedback phase to define one more
'concept' besides the 23 that have been defined (again: I think. The
communication is a bit confusing to me, sorry). Deadline is March 17 (5-6
days from now).
The process should be explained here:
https://brandingwikipedia.org/concepts/ (scroll down, the concepts are
actually on that page below the text. Yes, those blocks.)
It turns out that at the very bottom in the footer, there's a link to a
wikipage where you should be able to engage:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Communications/Wikimedia_brands/2030_moveme…
on that meta page however, they seem to rather recommend to engage on
Facebook (a closed group
<https://www.facebook.com/groups/wikipediabrandnetwork/>) or on Wikimedia
Space (!sic).
Anyhow, at a first glance those concepts look fine, but that'd be true for
many sets of 23 buzzwords :). I don't have enough insights into the
consequences of these choices, or how they got together, but hopefully the
communications team can share that at some point better than me.
Other people here may have more informed opinions than me.

Wikimania is fast approaching, this year it'll be held in Bangkok and as
always the Wikimedia Foundation has a limited number of opportunities to
assist people to attend. There are two types of scholarships the first
being a full scholarship which covers, travel, accommodation, and
registration, the second a partial scholarship that covers accommodation
and registration.
This year for the first time East, South East Asia, and Pacific (ESEAP) as
collaboration between the region we'll be your host for Wikimania. The
region has placed a high importance on collaboration and knowledge sharing
this years Wikimania program will reflect that. Our theme is;
*Power of Diverse Collaboration*
*Sharing knowledge brings people together*
How does this impact on scholarship? ESEAP is looking for people who are
prepared to share their knowledge to help develop potential future
leaders. We'll be looking for two broad areas of contributions, from those
who have successfully developed programs, and those newer contributors who
want to develop their skills to do more but have never been to a Wikimania
to broaden their support networks.
As you apply please agree to share your details with the local affiliate
should they also have scholarships available. When answering questions if
you have urls to reports, dashboards, and events reports please provide
them. Rather than writing lots of words again have your past recordings
speak.
On behalf of ESEAP community, and the Scholarship committee we look forward
to seeing you in Bangkok in August.

Hello,
Some time ago, I started to gather information regarding existing and
planned tutorials for Wikimedia which are in a video or interactive format.
Initially this information was on Meta in a place which was difficult to
find. I moved the content to
https://outreach.wikimedia.org/wiki/NavWiki/External_Resources. I hope that
this will be a helpful starting place for anyone who is looking for
existing or planned tutorial resources. Also, if someone creates or updates
a tutorial, I hope that they will update the information on that page.
The tutorials may cover topics for Wikipedia, Wikidata, and other Wikimedia
projects.
Currently, resources are listed which are in German, Spanish, Serbian,
Hebrew, and English. Also, I believe that the Arabic language tutorials
which are currently listed in the section for unfinished resources have
been completed, and I am planning to reach out to request an update
regarding the status of those resources.
Ever onward,

Dear all,
A quick save the date:
On *Sunday 8 March*, the International Women's Day, we are launching
the WikiGap
Challenge <https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/WikiGap_Challenge> [1] for the
second year in a row.
The aim of the challenge, which will run until 8 April, is to create and
improve articles to strengthen Wikipedia's coverage of women and related
topics in as many languages as possible.
This year, we are teaming up with UN Human Rights Office. A set of articles
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/WikiGap_Challenge/List> [2] on women
active in human rights will give bonus points, and the winner of the
challenge will get an opportunity to participate for a couple of days in
some events organised by UN Human Rights on the margins of the June session
of the Human Rights Council in Geneva.
The challenge is a part of the *WikiGap campaign
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/WikiGap>*, [3] co-organized by the Swedish
Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Wikimedia Sverige, Swedish embassies and
Wikimedia affiliates and volunteers across the world.
Sign up <https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/WikiGap_Challenge/Participants> as
a participant already now! We look forward to seeing you in the competition
:-)
Best,

The Wiki Loves Women initiative is celebrating Africa’s women leaders
throughout March 2020 with the ''Tell Us About Her'' drive on the ISA
tool. The drive is aimed at improving the visibility of political
leaders and activists across Africa on Wikimedia projects.
If you do not know it yet, the ISA tool is a fun and mobile friendly
tool that helps you to add better descriptions onto the photographs
uploaded to Wikimedia Commons within selected categories, so that they
are more useful on Wikipedia and Wikidata. Information added to the
image description is structured data (depicts or captions). Categories I
chose for this campaign are related to politicians, activists and in
particular feminists from Africa.
I invite you to check out what the ISA tool is (if you have not yet done
so during previous drives). And I of course invite you to join and help
add structured data information on our ISA current campaign ''Tell Us
about Her'' :)))

BEIJING, Feb. 29 (Qiuwen) - The coronavirus outbreak originated from China's Wuhan in Hubei province only two months ago had already claimed thousands of lives with more infected, but none of them are Wikimedians - as far as we know.
As of February 28th, Qiuwen can independently confirm that all active Wikimedians living in the Greater China are not infected by the virus, including three of them who live in outbreak's epicenter Wuhan, and dozens more who live in other parts of the Hubei province as well as other heavily-infected cities in China. However, many of them were put under citywide lockdowns, and just like other local residents, are not allowed to move freely. Meanwhile, one editor in Hong Kong was put under a compulsory quarantine by local health authorities due to close contact with a confirmed patient. The editor was forbidden to go outside their home for a 14-day quarantine period. Detailed information of those editors themselves will not be disclosed for privacy reasons.
Several meetups and edit-a-thons in China were either canceled or postponed due to the outbreak. Since many Wikipedia enthusiasts in China are college students, meetups are generally scheduled to cope with the beginnings and endings of academic semesters. However, those meetups were postponed as the 2020 spring semester, which typically begins from late February to early March, was delayed by education authorities. Organizers reported canceling a meetup scheduled to be held in late January in the eastern coastal city of Qingdao, while several others, including those in Beijing and Shenzhen targeting college students, were postponed until most schools reopen.
Another contributing factor to the suspension of these meetups is governments have been discouraging people from traveling back from their hometowns to big metropolises like Beijing and Shanghai after the Chinese Lunar New Year holiday, which means attendee turnouts for meetups held in these cities may be lower than usual.
The community in Hong Kong seemed to have suspended their meetup for the outbreak as well. The Hong Kong community has had four meetups per year in the past two years, with the most recent one held in November 2019. However, the next meetup, which supposes to be held in late February according to their routine, was never announced by the community leaders in the first place.
Communities in Taiwan was not significantly affected by the outbreak, as the island does not have as many reported cases comparing to the mainland and Hong Kong. Nevertheless, the organizer for a Wikimedia photowalk did make a post on Facebook, saying a mandatory body temperature check will be implemented before the activity rolls out.
The coronavirus outbreak has been ameliorating in China during the past few days, with new confirmed cases dropped dramatically, especially outside the epicenter Hubei province. Local Wikimedians in Beijing are currently planning to have their meetups rescheduled for the next public holiday, which is the Tomb-Sweeping Day holiday in early April. But the exact planning is still yet to be decided.
The Wikimedia Foundation and Wikimedia Deutschland canceled physical meetings of the Wikimedia Summit on Friday, which planned to take place in Berlin from April 3rd to 5th. The scholarship application for Wikimania this August in Bangkok, Thailand, remains open, and there are no signs indicating the bigger Wikimedians' gathering will be canceled so far.

Hello,
* Preface *
"What's making you happy this week?" is returning after an unplanned
pause that was due to off-wiki events. User:Clovermoss and I agreed
that we will try to alternate weeks writing this publication.
I hope that this email, now in plain text format, is easier to read
than previous WMYHTW emails were.
* Main content *
The Commons Picture of the Day for 1 March 2020 is of a hermitage [1],
named "Ermita del Santo Cristo de Miranda" [2][3], which is located in
Spain. I think that everyone should sometimes get a break for personal
refreshment, such as by curling up in a chair with a book, going on a
vacation or retreat, or pursuing a hobby.
A hobby that I enjoy is music. Here is a video clip from "Star Trek:
Voyager" in which the ship's doctor and the character Seven of Nine
sing a duet. This happens during a story line in which the Doctor
gives Seven advice regarding romance. They sing an American English
folk song, "You are my Sunshine":

* Closing comments *
What’s making you happy this week? You are welcome to write in any
language. You are also welcome to start a WMYHTW thread next week.
Additional translations of the subject line of this email would be
appreciated on Meta at
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/User:Pine/WMYHTW_translations. Thanks
to User:Superzerocool [4] for the Spanish translation.

Hi everyone,
Open, facilitated community conversations for the pre-final movement
strategy recommendations finished on February 21, 2020. I would like to
sincerely thank everyone – individual contributors, affiliates, and the
Wikimedia Foundation – who took part in the discussions and shared
feedback.
== What happens next ==
We have summarized the input received from across the movement and compiled
it in a short report, which is now on Meta [1]. This report provides a
brief overview of the major areas of support and debate regarding the 13
recommendations and the principles,
and ways to improve the document as a whole.
This report and the linked material will be the input provided to the
writers for finalizing the recommendations next week. As some affiliate
events are still under way, incoming information up until the meeting will
be summarized.
=== Integrating feedback and finalizing recommendations ===
Detailed feedback from communities, guidance from the Wikimedia Foundation
Board of Trustees, and input from reviewers will be reviewed and analyzed
to help create the final version of the recommendations. For this, six
former working groups members and one strategy salon community organizer as
well as the core team and Wikimedia Foundation Chief of Staff, Ryan
Merkley, will meet from March 10 to 12 in New York City [2] to work
together in person. They will be joined for part of the meeting by
Wikimedia Foundation Executive Director Katherine Maher. Following this
meeting, the content and language will be reviewed for clarity and then
translated, and we aim to have the recommendations finalized and published
in late March.
== Update from the Wikimedia Foundation’s Board of Trustees ==
The Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees has reviewed the pre-final
version of the movement strategy recommendations. Last week, they published
a statement [3] outlining their thoughts on the process overall and the
recommendations.
I’d like to thank the Board of Trustees for their careful and thoughtful
review of the recommendations and for the support and guidance that they
have provided throughout the movement strategy process.
If you need any further information about movement strategy, please check
our FAQ page [4] or feel free to reach out to me.
Best wishes,
Nicole
