> Hello,
I am writing to invite anyone to join the next online meeting of Wikimedia
Café on Saturday 28 March 2020 4:30 PM UTC. Details for joining are at
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Café
----> (video room open at that time) https://virginia.zoom.us/my/wikilgbt
The agenda for this month includes discussing COVID-19 and Wikipedia and
how Wikimedia community members feel about WMF/community relations.
Wikimedia Café is a modest, one-hour, monthly online meeting which for the
past few months has had fewer than 10 attendees. At these meetings anyone
can propose to discuss any topic of broad Wikimedia community interest, as
if we all were able to meet in person over coffee. The meetings themselves
are an experiment in small group Wikimedia community conversation with
video chat, phone access options, and online shared notetaking. Please see
WikiProject Remote Event Participation for more information about this
general style of online event.
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/WikiProject_remote_event_participation
- Anyone interested in joining may do so.
- Anyone interested in reading notes of past meetings can find them on
the meta page.
- If there is anyone who wants to get their ideas published in the wiki
world, consider looking at how this Café works, because voice chat with
notetaking could be a way to organize your own wiki community.
Thanks Pine for performing as host in this and thanks to anyone who submits
topics for discussion or who is able to join.

Hi everyone,
I wanted to share the following email. I send this to all current Wikimedia
conference grant recipients earlier today.
*Summary:*
- All conferences funded by Wikimedia Foundation grants must be
cancelled or postponed until further notice
- Cancellation fees and other penalties can be covered through grant
funds
- Not complying with these instructions might affect future grant
requests
- Please contact your program officers for further guidance
- We will not be approving grants for conferences until further notice
Thanks for your understanding, and stay safe!
Katherine

Hi all,
I’m writing to you as applicants and recipients of funding for Wikimedia
movement conferences scheduled or planned before December 2020. You will
not be surprised to learn that we are making some changes to our support
for movement conferences during the 2020 global COVID-19 pandemic.[1][2]
Two weeks ago, I sent all Project, Rapid, and Annual Plan grantees a
request to cancel or reschedule all public programs, and last week, we
canceled Wikimania[4]. Today, I want to provide clarity for recipients of
conference grants.
*== Cancelling or postponing events: next steps == *
We are asking all grantees with previously-approved and funded conferences
to postpone or cancel their conference until the World Health Organization
declares the COVID-19 pandemic over.
We recognize that you have already put a lot of effort into organizing and
planning your conference. However, our first priority is the health and
safety of you, your Wikimedia community, and the general public. We thank
you for modeling social responsibility and leadership by postponing your
event.
Global public health guidance indicates that the more quickly the world
responds to a pandemic, the better off the outcomes. In order to safeguard
free knowledge, we must also prioritize the well-being of the people who
make it possible.
*To facilitate postponing* the events and rescheduling them to a date *after
15 September 2020*, we ask the following:
1. Gather the data regarding all prepaid expenses, and report on any
unused funds. Any incurred costs due to cancellations will not be deducted
from your total grant. In due time, we will review any increase requests on
a case-by-case basis.
2. Determining the new event date should be done in collaboration with
your program officer (Chen Almog, calmog(a)wikimedia.org) to ensure your
new event date does not overlap with other movement events or other
potential constraints.
3. Please hold the grant funds until they can be repurposed to cover the
rescheduled event. Those funds should not be repurposed to accommodate any
other activity without your program officer’s approval.
4. If you have a proposal for repurposing the grant funds that is
different than simply postponing your event, please discuss this with your
program officer.
5. Our hope is that we will have better insight into the future by June.
We will reach out to you by June 30th to revisit the situation. Please feel
free to reach out if you think you are ready to discuss this earlier.
6. If you wish to* cancel* your proposed event, we ask you to
communicate this to us soon so we can specifically work with you on
returning the funds to the Wikimedia Foundation for other use.
*== Thank you == *
We know how important it is to support one another and keep our communities
connected right now. We also know how important it is that you are able to
take care of yourself, your family, and other aspects of your life. If you
want to continue planning Wikimedia activities appropriate for this moment
(such as online, distributed events), we support you. Hosting online events
will be new for many of us, but we have already seen Wikimedians around the
world working on new approaches. We encourage you to connect with them, and
review this growing collection of resources on Meta-Wiki.[5]
We also recognize some people may need to pause in their volunteer efforts
in order to take care of those around them. That’s also okay. You should
not feel pressure to redesign your activities in order to meet previous
goals. There is no penalty for canceling.
Your program officer can work with you to discuss any ideas or answer
questions, so please reach out to us if you would like to talk. We’ll also
keep sharing more information and resources in the coming weeks via usual
community channels and this Meta-Wiki page:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/COVID-19 [6]
We are all here to support you and your communities right now. If you have
any questions about this email or your grant, please contact your program
manager, or send an email to eventsteam(a)wikimedia.org.
Stay safe and take care!
With thanks,
Katherine Maher - Chief Executive Officer,
Janeen Uzzell - Chief Operating Officer,
Joël Letang - Events Team Manager

*Dear all,Here’s an update regarding the Celtic Knot Wikimedia Language
Conference <https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Celtic_Knot_Conference_2020>,
planned on 9-10 July in Limerick, Ireland, organised by Wikimedia UK and
Wikimedia Community Ireland together with the Hunt Museum. We are taking the
current health crisis very seriously, and we cannot foresee how long it
will take before things get back to normal. However, we really want to
maintain an event that can bring together various people from the Wikimedia
community as well as cultural and education institutions to work on
minority languages on the Wikimedia projects. For these reasons, we decided
to transform this year’s edition of the Celtic Knot Conference into a fully
remote event. We will build a structure and a program that allows sharing
content online, as well as social interactions and knowledge exchange,
through various tools (videostream, chat, collaborative content
creation). This situation is unexpected, but we still hope that we can take
the best out of it, experiment on new formats, and we are convinced that
our participants will come up with creative ideas. The previously opened
call for papers will keep running for an extended time, until Thursday 30
April. Feel free to make some proposals and indicate what would be your
favourite format. We will keep you updated on this talk page
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Talk:Celtic_Knot_Conference_2020> to let
you know about the new format of the conference and how to participate. If
you have any ideas or suggestions, they are very welcome on this page
too. Thanks for your understanding agus slán go fóill! For the organization

There's been a lot that's made me happy this week. However, I realize that
right now is a difficult time for a lot of people. Before I write about
anything else, I would like to thank the real world heroes out there. I
think that no words can accurately describe the cumulative effort and
sacrifices that so many people are making everyday. I would especially like
to thank doctors, nurses, and other medical professionals. I would like to
thank people who provide shelter and food to other people in need. I want
to thank the countless parents that are doing everything they can. I want
to thank caregivers for what they do everyday. I extend my sympathies to
anyone who is going through a really difficult time right now, because so
many people are facing struggles that I can't even begin to imagine.
Sometimes, it's the small and seemingly inconsequential moments that can
really matter. For me, that's been doing my best to do what I can. Living
in those moments of joy where I find them. This week, that involved lots of
oatmeal and tea, taking a brief walk outside to feel the wind, and reading
for hours on end. I have also listened to music. If anyone is curious, I
absolutely adore _My Favorite Things_[1] from _The Sound of Music_[2]. I
think I gravitated towards it because even though life can be scary
sometimes, remembering your favourite things can help get you through that.
I've also spent time on Wikipedia, and there are a lot of good things
happening on-wiki. There's a new WikiProject dedicated to Wikipedia's
coverage of COVID-19 and the ongoing pandemic: WikiProject COVID-19[3].
There are so many editors actively contributing there, and it's
heartwarming to see this kind of intense collaboration and dedication. The
ramifications of these actions have a very real impact on the real world.
It's amazing that so many people are doing their best to help others. I'm
thankful for that, and to everyone who tries to make the world a better
place.

Hoi,
Obviously with a pandemic people die including notable people. As I am used
to do, I have a query, a Listeria list that will update the latest
information based on what we know in Wikidata.
Given that it is not restricted to any one Wikipedia, we will know the
notable dead from any and all Wikipedias.
It is easy enough to have this list on your Wikipedia..
Thanks,
GerardM
