Hey all!
I wanted to send a quick reminder that our English language fundraiser is
officially launching tomorrow afternoon (Tuesday 28th November, at 16.00
UTC) with some final systems tests running between now and then.
---Banners and Ideas---
You can see the all of our current most effective fundraising banners on
our Fundraising Ideas page where you can also contribute any specific ideas
or stories we should tell via social media, banners, emails etc:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Fundraising/2017-18_Fundraising_ideas
---Blog Posts---
We've recently published two blog posts about our fundraising work. The
first covers how we try to limit the disruption to our readers during
campaigns. The second is a recent tranche of research conducted into what
our readers think about our fundraising. Take a look!
Banner limiting:
https://blog.wikimedia.org/2017/10/03/fundraising-banner-limit/
Donor research:
https://blog.wikimedia.org/2017/11/17/fundraising-donor-learnings/
---Reporting Issues---
If you see any technical issues with the banners or payments systems please
do report it on phabricator:
https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/maniphest/task/create/?template=118862
If you see a donor on a talk page, OTRS, or social media with questions
about donating or having difficulties in the donation process, please refer
them to: donate{{at}}wikimedia.org
Here is also the ever present fundraising IRC channel to raise urgent
technical issues: #wikimedia-fundraising

---Next Updates---
There will be a further launch announcement on the Wikimedia blog tomorrow
and I will give a brief update at the end of the week with our progress and
hopefully some interesting initial lessons learnt. A more substantial
update will follow later in the week.
Finally, I’d like to thank the community here in advance for your help and
patience over the coming weeks. From here on out, wish us luck!
Many Thanks

Hi all,
On Wikipedia and in our movement we are aware of the gendergap that exists
and all kinds of activities are organised to make the gap smaller. I think
this is great as no single gap should exist in collecting all the knowledge
in the world, as well as our movement should be diverse as the world's
population is diverse.
The statistics are clear on this matter, this is something to take care of.
However, a part of the approach is causing problems, because general
statistics should not be applied on individuals as that reduces humans to
numbers only.
The reason why I bring this up is because I recently received an e-mail
from a user in the Wikimedia movement who has (temporarily?) stopped
contributing as she is not happy with a specific aspect of the atmosphere
in Wikimedia.
She does not speak out at loud, but I think we must be aware as movement of
the silent cry, therefore this e-mail to bring awareness (but with respect
for the privacy of this individual).
What has happened?
She was invited to participate in a Wikimedia activity, because:
1. she is a woman
2. she is from a minority
3. she is from an area in the world with much less editors (compared to
Europe/US)
and perhaps also because her colour of her skin is a bit different then
mine (Caucasian).
At the same time she has the impression that the work she does on the
Wikimedia wiki('s) is not valued, nor taken into account.
She does not want to be invited because she is a woman, nor because she is
from a minority, nor ....... etc. This is offensive.
She only wants to be invited because of the work she contributes on
Wikipedia/etc.
Besides the many good initiatives and intentions, this kind of approaches
to our contributors is demotivating them, please be aware of this. I
believe demotivation/frustration is the largest problem we face as movement.
I heard from people that the problem described is called tokenism
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tokenism>.
I believe the only way to close the gaps related to gender, minorities,
etc, is to create an atmosphere in what everyone is appreciated for what
she/he is doing, completely unrelated to the gender someone appears to
have, the ethnicity, race, area of the world, etc etc etc etc.
Thank you!
Romaine
Hello,
I thought I would ask if any of the junior or senior researchers here on
this mailing list have conducted previous inquiries into Wikipedia's
sourcing.
I am currently working on a project of determining what proportion of
Wikipedia is sourced to newspapers, the military, the Church, social
media, etc.
The data I've compiled this month, along with a brief write-up, have
been posted to Wikipediocracy:
http://wikipediocracy.com/2018/08/26/wikipedia-sources-methods/
I imagine I'm reinventing the wheel... such studies have been done
before, by the WMF, with power tools (bots), right?
Thanks for any corrections / suggestions,
sashi
The Foundation has been accepting BitCoin donations. Unfortunately,
BitCoin is very wasteful in terms of electricity, and is therefore a
dirty cryptocurrency.
I recommend that the Foundation immediately cease accepting BitCoin,
and require donors who wish to donate in cryptocurrency to convert to
FoldingCoin instead. Please see: FoldingCoin (FLDC)
http://foldingcoin.net/ whitepaper:
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1y4MV9AwGLTRFqD-kjC4uN0AX59kHOpO1OWsabnx…
This conversion will place the Foundation at the forefront of
cryptocurrency technology, and stop it from contributing to extremely
dirty waste. As other cryptocurrencies based on proofs of useful work
instead of useless work emerge, the Foundation should consider those.
FoldingCoin is based on proofs of useful prediction of protein
folding, which is useful for computer-aided antibody design, and used
in turn for cancer therapies and many other applied and research
medical fields.
I also invite anyone in the community interested in co-authoring my
forthcoming derivative whitepaper on proofs of useful intelligibility
remediation work to contact me off-list, please. I am also willing to
help with proofs of useful encyclopedia article improvement, but I am
not certain if ORES is yet robust enough to support such proof in a
secure fashion.
Best regards,
Jim Salsman

Dear All,
We all know that Wikisource is one of the trending Wikimedia projects. We
are getting many new editors and new books to Indic language Wikisource's.
At the same time, we even noticed that there are many problems faced by the
new editors and a few of the existing editors. To help all of the editors
we have created a Handbook titled as *Wikisource Handbook for Indic
communities
<https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Wikisource_Handbook_for_Indian_Comm…>.
*Which is now available[1] to everyone to make the best use of it. I
request everyone to share this with all those who are in need of support in
editing Wikisource.
Authors of the book: Bodhisattwa Mandal and Ananth Subray P V.

Hi everyone,
I am writing to share with you our fundraising report for fiscal year 2018
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Fundraising/2017-18_Report>. This report
is a collaborative effort on behalf of many teams: fundraising tech, ops
and donor services, major gifts, online fundraising, legal, communications,
and more.
The fundraising report offers us an opportunity to pause and reflect on
learnings from last year and also consider where we're headed, particularly
as we approach one of our busiest times of the year for fundraising. It's
also an inspiring reminder of how many people across the world support the
work of the community and WMF staff.
We welcome your questions and feedback.
Thank you,
Thea

EDIT SUMMARY
If you look at the contributions of the person that reverted
you, and did not leave
an edit summary, in most cases an administrator, you will find that yours
was 1 out
of 10 they have made in last 60 seconds or more , with that kind of
editing they are
not looking
at what you have done, but the fact that you are an IP editing, they are
eather watching
you from past edits (stalking you) or watching real time edits done by
IP’s.
your good faith edit and your discussion on the talk page are not looked at, and
even
the talk – discussion page is reverted.
(talk page en wikipedia and discussion page wikidata)
Not knowing what you have done wrong, if any, starts
edit wars, or notice board
complaints and page blocking etc.
To that end and to stop one part of the problem on en wikipedia and
wikidata etc..
the edit summary needs to be mandatory to the point that the save will not
work until
you type something in the box, and that the the default summary message is disabled .

As
advice to an individual editor on how to deal with good faith but problematics
edits, I would say give the newbie feedback on exactly what the specific problem
is with their reverted edit explain how to fix it, and continue to watch the
article and their user talk page to see how they are going, and keep offering
help until they get it right.
For my long answer on how to do it at
scale, see my other longer email.

Kerry,
This discussion about reverts, combined with my
recent experience on ENWP, makes me wonder if there's a way to make reverts feel
less hostile on average. Do you have any ideas about how to do
that?
Thanks,
Pine

Dear all,
As Nicole Ebber already wrote a couple of weeks ago, we would like to give
you some further information about the next Wikimedia Conference, that will
take place from March 29–31, 2019 in Berlin, Germany.
The next conference will focus on the Movement Strategy process and
movement governance for the organized part of the movement in general. The
program will be designed according to the status and needs of the ongoing
Movement Strategy process and its working groups. We are hoping to see a
diverse group of participants next year, and look forward to creating three
days of working, discussing, and thinking together. The event is made
possible through the generous financial support of the Wikimedia Foundation.
Thus, to make it clearer that learning and capacity-building will not be
part of the program and cut laces to the previous conference, we will
change the name to “Wikimedia Summit” (#wmsummit).
The change of the purpose of the event is accompanied by a change in the
composition of the audience. The event will be a more focused one, and
therefore we aim to scale down the audience to around 200 participants. As
it is this still the Wikimedia affiliates conference, every _eligible_
affiliate can send one (1) delegate. Furthermore, we will invite
participants from the Wikimedia Affiliate EDs (~10), WMF Board of Trustees
(10), WMF staff (~10), the committees (~15 from FDC, AffCom and Simple APG)
and additional members of the Movement Strategy working groups, that do not
come in another role (~20). You can find more information regarding this on
Meta.[1]
Registration for the Wikimedia Summit will open on November 2 and end on
December 17, 2018. We urge participants that need a visa to register no
later than November 19, so we can support them as best as possible to get a
visa for the event.
We will keep you updated in the further weeks and months via the usual
communication channels. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate
to contact us, preferably via wmsummit(a)wikimedia.de.
Best regards,
