Hi all,
Since my update last month, we have been collecting, processing, and
including your most recent input into the lastest version of the movement
strategic direction. This version is available on Meta-Wiki.[1]
We're so close! The direction will be finalized tomorrow, October 1.
Starting tomorrow, we will begin to invite individuals and groups to
endorse our movement's strategic direction. I want to share my greatest
thanks and appreciation for the work and contributions so many of you have
made throughout this first phase (Phase 1) of developing a shared strategic
direction.
In the coming weeks we will be preparing for Phase 2, which will involve
developing specific plans for how we achieve the direction we have built
together. I do not have many more details to share right now, but will of
course offer an update as they become available.
*Strategic direction*. Thank you to everyone who provided feedback on the
draft introduced at Wikimania. The version on Meta-Wiki is based on the
feedback you offered.
*Endorsements*. Once the strategic direction closes tomorrow,
organizations, groups, and individuals within the movement will be invited
to endorse the direction, in a show of support for the future we are
building together. We'll be sending an update next week on the process and
timeline.
*Concluding Phase 1*. Please join me in offering thanks to the volunteers,
staff, and contractors who came together to make this possible! As we
transition into Phase 2, some of these roles will be concluded and new ones
created in their place. We'll keep you updated.
*Wikimedia CEE Meeting 2017*. I was fortunate to join Wikimedians from
Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) last weekend at the sixth annual Wikimedia
CEE Meeting[2] in Warsaw, Poland. Nicole Ebber and Kaarel Vaidla led a
series of discussions on the direction, including what it means for CEE.[3]
Thank you our hosts, Wikimedia Polska, and to all of the attendees for such
a wonderful event!
*In other news.* I've heard from many people how much you appreciate these
updates as a means of keeping track about what is going on. I'm talking to
the Communications department about keeping them going once the strategic
planning process concludes, with a focus on more general updates. Keep the
feedback coming.
Since my last update, our planet has reminded us of its incredible and
often unforgiving strength. My thoughts, and those of many within the
Wikimedia Foundation, are with our Wikimedia family which have been
affected by the natural disasters of recent weeks. We have been in touch
with our affiliates in the areas impacted, and will offer any support we
can.
Finally, as our CFO Jaime mentioned last week,[3] the Foundation is in the
process of moving into our new office, in One Montgomery Tower. We invite
you to visit its new page on Meta-Wiki.[4]
We are at the halfway mark of this movement strategy process, and I am
incredibly proud of the work we have done together on the strategy. Thank
you, again, to everyone for your contributions to this process. We have
more work ahead but should be proud of what we have achieved already.
Ten cuidado (Spanish translation: “Be safe”),
Katherine

Greetings,
The certified results of the 2017 Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees
election are now available on Meta-Wiki: https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Foundation_elections/2017/Results
Congratulations to María Sefidari (User:Raystorm), Dariusz Jemielniak (User:pundit), and James Heilman (User:Doc James) for receiving the most community support. Subject to a standard background check, they will be appointed by the Board at their August meeting at Wikimania.
These results have been certified by the elections committee, the Wikimedia Foundation staff advisors to the committee, and the Board of Trustees.
There were 5,581 votes cast, with 5,120 of those being valid. The 461-vote difference comes from recast ballots, where eligible voters recast ballots to change their votes, and struck votes, of which there were 34. (Some of the recast votes were also struck.)
Additional information is available on the Wikimedia Blog: https://blog.wikimedia.org/2017/05/20/board-of-trustees-elections-2017/
More statistics on the elections and a post-mortem from the committee will be published in the coming days. In the meantime, we would appreciate your input—what went well for you in this election? What could we do better next time? These reports are crucial to helping future elections be even more successful, and we hope that you will offer your feedback and ideas: https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Foundation_elections/2017/Post_mo…
The committee would like to thank everyone that participated in this year’s election for helping make it, again, one of the most diverse and representative in the movement’s history.
Sincerely,
– Wikimedia Foundation Elections Committee

Dear Wikimedians,
Years ago, as part of the first Strategy process of 2009-2010, a
distinction entered our lives, between Global North and Global South
countries. That distinction was borrowed from a United Nations agency
named ITU, and it was used as shorthand to refer to communities the
Foundation considered to need additional resources and help to achieve
impact on our mission of creating and sharing free knowledge.
However, the distinction was never a very good fit for us. It was based on
UN notions like the Human Development Index, and gave much weight to
nation-wide economic conditions. Its binary nature did not allow for
distinguishing between countries where Wikimedia work is possible and
happening, albeit with difficulty, and ones where no Wikimedia work, or
next to none, is happening, or possible. It also looked only at geography,
whereas much of our work is defined by language communities and not by
geographies. And it was political and alienating to many people.
In short, it was both not as useful as we needed it to be as well as
unloved and rejected by many.
The Community Resources team at the Wikimedia Foundation has been thinking
about replacing that distinction with a more nuanced one, that would be a
much better fit with our needs, would take into account the actual state of
editing communities, would consider multiple axes beyond geography, and
would be less controversial.
We began using the term "emerging communities" two years ago, first as a
replacement for the term Global South, but it has always been our intention
to define Emerging Communities ourselves. Finishing the proposed
definition took a back seat for a while due to other priorities, but we are
ready to share the proposed definition today:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Community_Engagement/Defining_Emerging_Comm…
We welcome your thoughts, on the talk page (ideally) or on this thread.
The definition is already our working definition, but we are open to
incorporating changes to both wording and substance through October 31st.
Be sure to take a look at the FAQ supplied at the bottom of the page, too.
:)
Cheers,
Asaf
I'm skeptical that the online mobile apps are a good use of resources,
with their very meager usage, especially relative to the several
engineers tasked to support them, their questionable accessibility
aspects, declining app store ratings, and other issues involving
content substitution which have recently come up on this list, not to
mention breaking the cross-platform nature of the web. I note that
it's currently impossible to find online mobile app usage statistics
on the analytics we pages, dashboard or reportcard, where they last
measured 0.0006% of pageviews in 2015:
https://stats.wikimedia.org/wikimedia/squids/SquidReportUserAgents.htm
However, I wholeheartedly support this new offline app project, and
hope that it will be the primary focus of the Foundation's app-not-web
efforts going forward:

Huge thanks to whomever directed this pivot!
Hello everyone!
We wanted to share some good news with you: Our international team
around the Wikimedia Hackathon mentoring program won the first Austrian
Open Source Award in the category "Diversity" [1].
The Austrian Open Source Award was established this year in order to
raise awareness and visibility for our local Open Source Communities and
their projects. The jury consisted of representatives from across the
various Open Communities in Austria (Open Knowledge, Linux, and Drupal
among others) and honoured outstanding projects in the categories Open
Data, Open Software, Open Hardware, and Diversity.
The Jury particularly mentioned our comprehensive documentation under a
free license which enables other event organizers to apply our ideas and
concepts and to build on them [2] [3].
We are very happy about this positive signal for inclusive events, which
make it easier for all newcomers to join our great communities and we
hope it encourages even more people to also make our other Wikimedia
events more and more newcomer friendly. A special thanks goes to our
awesome mentors who were the heart and soul of the mentoring program and
the Hackathon!
For more information about what we learned around the mentoring program
you can also check out our post from the Wikimedia Blog [4].

Hi all,
In preparation for the upcoming Wikimedia Conference 2018 – which will take
place from April 20 to 22 in Berlin, Germany[1] – we again launch a call
for a “Visiting Wikimedian”. This initiative aims to transfer practical
knowledge from the German chapter to other Wikimedia movement affiliates
and provides us with an outside view.
The scope of a “Visiting Wikimedian” is mainly to support the organization
of the Wikimedia Conference in terms of logistics and program. The
“Visiting Wikimedian” will be involved in all essential steps of the
planning and organizing process and will be able to contribute in multiple
ways. We are open to designing the tasks together, according to the
Visiting Wikimedian’s skills and experiences and her or his affiliate’s
needs. We are especially looking for a person who can apply the knowledge
to an upcoming event, for example if the affiliate is hosting a regional or
international conference.
You can find more information about the initiative on Meta.[2] Teele Vaalma
(Visiting Wikimedian from Wikimedia Estonia in 2016, [3]) and Davit Saroyan
(Visiting Wikimedian from Wikimedia Armenia in 2017, [4]) have both written
blog posts about their experience.
If you are interested in becoming a Visiting Wikimedian, please reach out /
apply to me directly
until 8 October (incl.).
Best regards,
Cornelius

Greetings,
Introducing myself, I am Krishna Chaitanya Velaga from Andhra Pradesh,
India. My user name is "Krishna Chaitanya Velaga", I've been actively
contributing to en Wikipedia and Commons since December 2014. I also form
the Executive Committee of Wikimedia Chapter (India). My mother tongue is
Telugu (te).
A Telugu movie titled Paisa Vasool
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paisa_Vasool_(2017_film)> was released on 1
September 2017. In the movie, male lead boasts himself by referring to
Wikipedia. His statement in the movie is as follows: *"36 brawls, 24
murders, 36 stabbings, This is visible record in Wikipedia" *(The same may
be observed from the trailer of the movie, between 0:22 to 0:32 at
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vVUZ-jG_i3c). As far I am concerned I feel
this as serious defamation of the brand, the community and the work we do.
It really degrades the reality and the efforts we put to produce
encyclopedic content to the readers.
In this context, I request the community to take interest in their to voice
their opinions, and also discuss any legal action to be enforced.
Regards,

Hi all, happy Friday. We are excited to share with you our fundraising
report for fiscal year 2017
<https://wikimediafoundation.org/wiki/2016-2017_Fundraising_Report>.
This full year fundraising overview is always a group project that depends
on the collaboration of many teams at the foundation: fundraising tech, ops
and donor services, major gifts, online fundraising, legal, communications
and more.
Thank you to everyone who contributed. A special thank you to Thea Skaff, a
full-time contractor with the online fundraising team, who shepherded this
project to completion in the midst of our busy first quarter.
I welcome your questions and feedback. We enter our biggest fundraising
season of the year with high morale and deep gratitude for the work of our
colleagues and fellow collaborators in this global community of free
knowledge advocates.
thank you,
sam
