Dear Wikimedia friends,
We are happy to announce the date of the next Wikimedia Conference:
>From 20 to 22 April 2018, we will welcome representatives from
Wikimedia Affiliates and partners, from the Wikimedia Foundation as
well as its committees in Berlin. We will closely coordinate with the
WMF’s teams for all things logistics, program and funding, and are
thankful for their support.
Taking the clear feedback from participants and our experiences from
several years of organizing this event into account, we have also
agreed to host WMCON in Berlin for an unlimited time. You will be able
to read more about our lessons learned in September/October, when we
publish our report about hosting WMCON from 2015-2017.
As in the previous years, we will create a space for conversations
around the future of our movement, with a special focus on the
affiliates’ responsibilities and needs as well as collaboration within
our movement and with our partners. Phase 2 of the movement strategy
process will also be in full swing at that time, so that WMCON can
again provide one essential platform for strategic conversations among
affiliates and the WMF.
The main conference will run from Friday to Sunday, and will again
accommodate pre- and post-conference sessions and workshops. In the
coming months, we will provide you with all necessary information on
eligibility criteria for attendance, registration, funding and program
design. Stay tuned for updates!
If you have questions or ideas to share, feel free to reach out via
the usual channels or talk to Abraham, Cornelius or me next week at
Wikimania.

Bad news, we have to temporarily roll-back syntax highlighting to fix a
page load issue (T172458). We should have it back on soon. Sorry for
anti-climactic news!
The Tullie House Museum in Carlisle has a number of objects on loan
from the British Museum,[3] and it appears that it is only those
objects that have any restrictions on photography. I took photographs
of two of these (without any flash), as the restrictions are
shockingly obvious cases of copyfraud, and not for any reason that
might protect the works from damage.[1][2] It seems incomprehensible
as to why the British Museum would ever want to make copyright claims
over ~2,000 year old works especially considering they are not a
money-making commercial enterprise, but a National institute and
charity, with a stated objective[4] that "the collection should be put
to public use and be freely accessible".
Does anyone have any ideas for action, or contacts in the Museum, that
might result in a change of how loans from the BM are controlled? I'm
wondering if the most effective way forward is to make some social
media fuss, to ensure the Trustees of the museum pay attention. The
reputational risk the apparent ignorance over copyright by the BM
loans management team seems something that would be easy to correct,
so changes to policy are overdue. My own experience of polite private
letters to a Museum's lawyer demonstrates that you may as well save
hours of volunteer time by filing these in the bin, compared to the
sometimes highly effective use of a few pointed tweets written in a
few minutes and shared publicly and widely across social media.
Those of us Wikimedians who work closely with GLAMs tend to shy away
from any controversy, wanting the organizations to move towards
sharing our open knowledge goals for positive reasons. I'm happy to
try those types of collegiate ways of partnering, however drawing a
few lines in the sand by highlighting embarrassing case studies, might
mean we make timely progress while activist dinosaurs like me are
still alive to see it happen.

Dear all,
As a member - and former chair - of Wikimedia France, this kind of message
really hurts my feelings and I still wonder why they can be posted on
international mailing lists.
We are supposed to act as responsible adults and work together so that the
chapters can manage projects... and I keep thinking we are pretty good at
it.
I don't want to read "shame", "false statement", "use Louise passing",
"uncollaborative way".
Both because it's a very agressive way to talk to human beings, because
it's misleading people about what's going on, and because it's simply not
true.
A few French wkipedians are not happy with the board and some of the
employees. They are about 25-30% of Wikimedia France members and asked for
a General Meeting - which will take place in September.
Some of their concerns can be understood, but some of those wikipedians
began to accuse the board of squandering money without any ground for it
(there have been two audits within the past few years and all the
accounts/expenses are audited yearly, published and commented to the
members), to go and see former employee's bosses to stalk them, to spread
rumours on their sexuality, to report members of the board to their own
boss etc. This is going mad. Really mad.
This is not "the community", Pierre-Selim, I'm sorry.
This is a few people, for various reasons, usualy very personal and very
bad ones. And those people refuse to acknowledge reality, even when the
board explains everything, even when lawyers explains what can and cannot
be done within a chapter.
I'm really worried about the behaviour of those people, and the future of
Wikimedia France - since the harassment could lead to prosecution from
employees.
Best,
Rémi

Hi all,
In the Dutch part of Belgium there exists a performing arts database, and
they are donating parts of it to Wikidata. Over the past century they have
collected the theatre venues and festivals where a Flemish theatre group
had its première. For many locations I already found an article in
Wikipedia or an item in Wikidata, for some not yet. For those of which no
article nor item could be found, I need your help!
Please help me identify which venues and festivals from your country listed
on this page have in your Wikipedia already an article?
https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/User:Romaine/Kunstenpunt_venues
You can edit the page!
The countries of what I have at least one or more locations are:
Argentina
Australia
Austria
Belarus
Brazil
Canada
Chile
China
Congo-Kinshasa
Croatia
Cyprus
Czech Republic
Denmark
Egypt
Estonia
Finland
France
Germany
Greece
Hong Kong

Romania
Russia
Slovakia

Dear all,
I am very deeply saddened to share the news of the passing of our fellow
community member Bassel Khartabil, also known to some as Bassel Safadi.
Bassel was detained on March 15, 2012 amid arrests on the one-year
anniversary of the Syrian uprising. He had been missing since October 2015,
when he was removed from the Syrian prison where he was being held. His
wife, Noura, confirmed earlier today in a statement on Facebook that he was
executed by the Syrian government shortly after his disappearance.
Bassel was a leader, advocate, and member of so many open culture
communities it is difficult to do them all justice. In addition to his
contributions to Wikimedia, he was project lead and public affiliate for
Creative Commons Syria, a member of the Global Voices community, a free
software advocate and contributor to Mozilla, and much more. The European
Parliament statement on his detention credited him with “opening up the
Internet in Syria and vastly extending online access and knowledge to the
Syrian people."[1] He was known for his boundless enthusiasm and passion,
always encouraging others to share, create, and connect with a better world
around them.
Many of you cared deeply about Bassel, working to raise awareness of his
detention and disappearance. Please know that his friends and family knew
of and appreciated these efforts, both as a voice on his behalf and a
reminder of the values of the communities to which he devoted his time and
attention. I personally am grappling with profound anger and sorrow that
someone so brilliant, humane, and generous should be taken in this way. For
those who did not know Bassel, you can learn more about his life and work
at his article [2], and at https://freebassel.org.
The Wikimedia Foundation will publish a statement soon, and ask for your
support in helping us translate that message to share more broadly. We will
also work to find a way to celebrate Bassel’s life and honor his
contributions at Wikimania next week.
Yours, sadly,
Katherine

we (Iranian wikimedian User Group) soon are going to start program with
well-known Center for the Disabled Persons to help them learn and edit
Wikipedia, Despite disability most of these people are astonishingly smart.
They want to effective in society. So we are going to use Wikipedia to help
them achieve that, soon we will start this initiative city by city and
hopefully by end of 2018 we will cover all major provinces and cities of
Iran. hopefully we can turn this to a global initiative.
Share your thoughts and experiences with us.

Hey Folks,
We are very happy to announce the top 10 winning photos[1] of Wiki Loves Earth Bangladesh 2017. These 10 photos will compete in the international stage of the competition.
Bangladesh has taken part in the international Wiki Loves Earth competition for the first time this year. During the competition, a total of 191 Bangladeshi participants uploaded more than 2000 freely licensed photographs of 40 (of the 51 government listed protected sites of Bangladesh) different protected sites in Wikimedia Commons. Thanks to the volunteers and jurors who were involved in organizing the competition and reviewing the entries.

Forwarding for those interested in intellectual property law. I'm nowhere near being an expert on this subject, but this case seems interesting for those of us who work with materials which are licensed under the GPL.

In a strong declaration that online open source licences are contracts,
the court declares:
“Defendant contends that Plaintiff’s reliance on the unsigned GNU
GPL fails to plausibly demonstrate mutual assent, that is, the
existence of a contract. Not so. The GNU GPL, which is attached to
the complaint, provides that the Ghostscript user agrees to its
terms if the user does not obtain a commercial license. Plaintiff
alleges that Defendant used Ghostscript, did not obtain a commercial
license, and represented publicly that its use of Ghostscript was
licensed under the GNL GPU. These allegations sufficiently plead the
existence of a contract.”
