Dear colleagues,
16 y.o. Timerkhan Shaykhutdinov of Zelenodolsk obtained his high school director approval to work on improving https://tt.wikipedia.org/wiki/Галимҗан_Ибраһимов article instead of writing a regular research essay for Tatar language and literature class. Photos from his presentation of the results in front of his class are available on Facebook @ https://www.facebook.com/groups/352291514949017/permalink/887636508081179/
This is the first such precedent in Tatar-speaking world, in the Republic of Tatarstan and, possibly, even within the whole of Russian Federation. I'm obviously proud to have been mentoring the guy within Selet WikiSchool project https://tt.wikipedia.org/wiki/Википедия:Сәләт_викимәктәбе
regards,
farhad

Hi all!
Since July 2016 [1], the Learning and Evaluation team has been invested in
understanding what leadership means in our movement, and how we can best
support it. On Thursday, November 16 at 9 am PST (1700 UTC), we will host a
public meeting to share what we have learned so far, and how we have been
working to support community leaders. Follow the stream here:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BJbg2w0RnFk and ask questions via IRC
(#wikimedia-office).
The first step was the Leadership Development Dialogue, a conversation
about what leadership means for our communities, and how the Wikimedia
Foundation can best support it. It was hosted by the Learning and
Evaluation team, part of the Community Engagement department.
The conversation touched on topics like what words best suited this area of
work, and also what skills identified a good leader, and how we could best
collaborate across the movement to provide support within our existing
infrastructures (e.g., Learning Days [2] and the Wikimedia Resource Center
[3]) and beyond.
What does this mean to your local community and your work? How can you join
these efforts?
Join us to learn more about what we have learned from community members
about leadership in the movement, and where we want to go next.
Participation is encouraged via IRC (#wikimedia-office). A recording of the
event will be available later on our youtube channel.
Hope to see many of you there!
Best,

Hi everyone,
A bit delayed, but we are happy to share that Olaniyan Olushola and Jack
Farah Mustaklem have appointed to the Affiliations Committee as new
members. In addition, three incumbent members (Rosie
Stephenson-Goodknight, Tanweer Morshed and Salvador Alcantar) have been
re-appointed for an additional term.
Here are Olushola and Farah, or Jack, in their own words:
*Jack Farah Mustaklem*:
I'm a Palestinian volunteer editor on Wikipedia from Jerusalem, and
Founding member and treasurer of Wikimedians of the Levant User Group, and
the representative in Palestine. I have been a Wikimedian since 2005,
editing both the English and Arabic Wikipedias. I have a passion for the
free dissemination of knowledge. Most recently, I have been coordinating
activities of the Wikipedia Education Program in Palestine, at both the
high school and university levels. Outside of the movement, Jack is an
advocate of free knowledge, a software engineer, and a father of three.
*Olaniyan Olushola*:
My name is Olaniyan Olushola, an accountant by profession, founding member
and president of Wikimedia User Group Nigeria.[1] I am an active Wikimedian
and member of the community with various contributions to Wikimedia
projects. I have organized several Wikimedia project in the last few years.
I organized Wiki Loves Africa 2015 and 2016 in Nigeria. I participated in
Wiki Indaba 2014 and WikiAfrica/OpenAfrica15,[2] a conference for
Wikipedians In Residence, organized by WikiAfrica in Johannesburg, South
Africa. I coordinated Wikipedia 15 in Nigeria[3] and Wiki loves Nigeria
Writing Contest, organized as part of Wikipedia @15 celebration in
Nigeria.[4] I coordinated Wiki Loves Women in Nigeria and my work was
extensively covered by multiple newspapers in Nigeria.[5] I coordinated
Wiki Photo Tour in Nigeria through a Wikimedia Foundation grant support in
2016.[6] I conceptualized a media partnership between Wikimedia UG Nigeria
and Blackface Media,[7] a radio program that runs every Wednesday called
Time-Out with Wikipedia. I am the lead presenter on Wikimedia Radio and TV
program. I established Wikimedia Fan Club at Lagos State University,
University of Ibadan and Wikimedia Hub, Nigerian Institute of Journalism
(NIJ). I am also the project coordinator for "She Can with ICT", a project
that focus on training Nigerian female students on how to contribute to
Wikimedia project. We are currently mentoring over twenty five potential
editors, through Wikimedia Outreach dashboard this project. [8]
I led Wikimedia UG Nigeria to sign a partnership agreement with Goge
Africa,[9] with the aim of improving African based articles on Wikipedia
with volume of free images. Presently, we have finalized a new partnership
agreement with a WFM 91.7 [10] to broadcast Wiki Loves Women on radio and
also to create awareness about Wikimedia projects.
If I am not on Wikipedia, I work as consultant in the area of Software
Deployment and Asset Management. I am married with two lovely kids.
We anticipate starting the next round of committee appointments in
December, and hope that everyone interested in working with Wikimedia
affiliates will consider applying!

Hi Βικιπαιδιστής,
I am sorry to learn that you felt harassed by some users at Greek
Wikipedia. However, you wrote "*From what I understand Wikimedia foundation
is not really interested of helping women who are being harassed*". So they
are interested in helping men who are being harassed? I don't know the
logic behind that comment but it sounds like something that does not exist
anywhere. Allegations of harassment requires strong evidences and in cases
where insufficient evidences were provided, I doubt the WMF will take any
action against the alleged person. This fundamentally have nothing to do
with gender. I'll encourage you to forward any complaints and evidence of
harassment to WMF SuSa. Mailing lists like this is often not the best place
for discussing issues like this. You may want to follow Asaf's advise
above.
Regards,
Isaac

I' m sorry to hear that Portuguese Wikipedia has similar problems as Greek
Wikipedia. Being the victim of harassment from administrators of Greek
Wikipedia (they post my real sex, name and email and archived my personal
data for future use to threaten me and the wikipedians who help me, telling
me that my harassment won t stop just in wikipedia but and in other social
media as the had done in the past) which led me to stop editing even tho
I'm a 100wikidayer and 100wikicommonsdayer and participated in an
international conference here in Greece presenting the work that the
community have done in Wikipedia. I think that letting fellow wikipedians
know about this kind of problems is crucial for the improvement of
community health because it can start some actions to resolve such cyber
crimes. From what I understand Wikimedia foundation is not really
interested of helping women who are being harassed as long as the bullying
is not reported to the police and the bullies are useful in wikipedia
projects as for example hosting a cee meeting or wikimania in Greece. They
are even rewarded with trips and let them participate in projects such as
women in Red, which is actually really funny if you think about it. The
bullies who sent women away from wikipedia are getting grands for
contacting workshops to find women who would like to participate in
wikipedia. :P They present themselves as educators in Greece but really who
would you like persons like that teaching their kids?
There is always a standard answer from wmf when someone complains of being
harassed: they say that this person is bitterful and not talking with
courtesy. In my case SUSA even implied that me (the victim) should
contacted my bullies and ask them politely to stop harassing me and did
absolutely nothing to help me. You see I m only a volunteer and not a
professional wikimedian so I m not really important to them.
I really hope the issues in Portuguese Wikipedia will resolve quickly
because I know how stressful and sad these situations can be not only for
the people involved but for all the community.

*Wikimedia Foundation appoints Toby Negrin as Chief Product Officer*
*Toby Negrin has been with the Wikimedia Foundation since 2013 and brings
nearly two decades of experience in research, design, analytics, and
product development*
(San Francisco, California) 8 November 2017 — The Wikimedia Foundation is
excited to announce the appointment of Toby Negrin as Chief Product
Officer. Toby has been leading the Foundation's product development in an
interim capacity since April. He brings nearly 20 years of experience of
integrating data, research, and design to produce effective and popular
products.
The Wikimedia Foundation is the nonprofit organization that supports
Wikipedia and the other Wikimedia projects. Together, Wikipedia and the
Wikimedia projects are visited by more than a billion unique devices every
month. The Wikimedia Foundation is driven by its mission to build a world
in which every single person can freely share in the sum of all human
knowledge.
As Chief Product Officer, Toby will lead one of the organization's largest
departments in collaborating with the Wikimedia communities on the
development of the software products which operate Wikipedia and the other
Wikimedia projects. He will be responsible for cultivating a culture of
excellence, engagement, and sustainability within the product engineering
teams. Toby will also work with others in the organization's leadership on
responding to the product needs and requests of the Wikimedia communities.
"Toby has demonstrated a style of leadership focused on outcomes,
collaboration with the Wikimedia community, and respect for Wikimedia
values," said Katherine Maher, Executive Director of the Wikimedia
Foundation. "He has a deep interest in partnership with our communities, an
instinct for assembling and cultivating teams, and a record of supporting
staff as they develop and explore new skills and roles. I am thrilled to
have him leading the Wikimedia Foundation's product development efforts."
Since joining the Wikimedia Foundation in 2013, Toby has led an expansion
of our analytics efforts, built a new team focused on people who utilize
the content developed by Wikimedia's volunteers, and championed the
development of intuitive mobile interfaces and mobile applications. Toby
played a critical role in the creation of the organization's Community Tech
team, which develops features and tools based on feedback from active
members of the communities. He was also a part of the creation of the New
Readers program, a cross-departmental effort to help new people discover
and benefit from Wikimedia's projects.
Prior to joining the Wikimedia Foundation, Toby led analytics efforts at
DeNA, a mobile social games company. At DeNA, he partnered with colleagues
in Japan and China to build global dashboards used to track gaming
performance around the world. He also held roles at Yahoo! related to cloud
platforms, anti-abuse efforts, and content moderation. Toby grew up in Los
Angeles and the UK before landing in the San Francisco Bay Area, and worked
in software development at startups in Sweden and The Netherlands.
"The Wikimedia movement is an amazing collaboration among editors,
developers, chapters and other organizations around the globe," Toby said.
"I am excited and honored to be part of the movement and look forward to
partnering with our communities to build the tools and experiences for the
next 15 years."
Toby graduated from the NIMBAS Graduate School of Management and University
of California - Santa Cruz. In his free time, he enjoys spending time
winemaking and grape growing, running and hiking Bay Area trails, playing
tennis, and supporting the Golden Gate Philharmonic youth orchestra.

Hey all!
Just a quick update and heads up on our upcoming fundraising activities.
This quarter marks an exciting time for the Wikimedia Foundation
Fundraising team as we run our English fundraiser, the largest campaign of
the year. As with previous years, that means running banners on English
Wikipedia and sending emails to past donors. It means hundreds of A/B tests
analyzing the impact of our messages to learn what kinds of content
resonates best with Wikipedia readers.
We’re just a few weeks away from the official launch of our banner campaign
on Giving Tuesday, November 28. [1] In the meantime, our email campaign has
launched and we are running periodic banner tests. By spreading out our
testing throughout the quarter, we are able to make more thoughtful choices
with regards to banner and email content, while limiting overall disruption
to our readers. We will not be showing more appeals or sending more emails
per user than previous years.
Last year, we ran a number of feedback sessions and surveys with both staff
and community, and we are hugely grateful to everyone who participated and
shared their feedback. We will be reaching out to English-languages
affiliates to take part in such sessions again. If you are interested in
joining such a session, please contact me offlist or sign up on the
Fundraising Ideas page. [3]
There are a number of other ways you can help support the fundraiser:
-
Have specific ideas or stories we should tell via social media, banners,
emails etc.? We’re also looking for nice images, if you could point us to
your favorites from Commons. Please add them to our fundraising ideas page.
[3]
-
If you need to report a bug or technical issue, please create a
Phabricator ticket. [4]
-
If you see a donor on a talk page, OTRS, or social media with questions
about donating or having difficulties in the donation process, please refer
them to donate{{at}}wikimedia.org.
-
Feel free to test our payments flow [5] and suggest improvements. [4]
We look forward to working with you all in the coming weeks.
Many thanks

Hi Farah,
It's great to hear about the success of Levant User Group's programs,
especially those in Palestine. Great work!
As WMIL also works with Arabic students [1], if you need any assistant with
materials and guides, we already created a few and we will be happy to
share them with you and provide any support.
Good luck!

A study, published on Oct 31st, 2017 in the Journal of Medical
Internet Research Medical Education, has found that Wikipedia helps
Canadian medical students improve their knowledge of medical content.
Wikipedia was compared to UpToDate, a subscription based online
medical resource, and a standard medical textbook.
The authors conducted a randomized controlled trial of 116 medical
students from four Canadian medical schools. Students initially wrote
a multiple choice exam similar to that used for licensing Canadian
physicians. They were then randomized to one of three electronic
resources, Wikipedia, UpToDate, or Harrison’s textbook of Internal
Medicine and had 30 minutes to use their assigned resource. During
this time, they were observed for compliance and had the opportunity
to take notes. The students then rewrote their original exam, armed
with the notes taken while using their resource.
The primary outcome was improvement in tests scores before and after
accessing the assigned resource. The authors found that medical
students assigned to Wikipedia had a statistically significant greater
improvement in test scores, compared to the medical textbook and a
trend towards improved performance as compared to UpToDate.
