Hi,
I volunteer to help with the Wikimania 2018: to promote the call, to recruit speakers, to review submissions etc.
I am a long time “wikipedian”, with first time editing already the very first year of the project. I have also worked in many conference program committees of various kind of international research conferences. More information about me is available in here:

Hello everyone! I am pleased to inform you on behalf of the Wikimedia
Community of the Republic of Srpska that after successfully completed
project Traces of Soul 2017
<https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Trace_of_Soul_2017> (wle+wlm)
our community launched a new project - Meet Srpska
<https://sr.wikipedia.org/wiki/%D0%92%D0%B8%D0%BA%D0%B8%D0%BF%D0%B5%D0%B4%D0…>,
whose realization is in progress. It is a competition in writing articles
on Wikipedia in Serbian language on topics related to the Republic of
Srpska. In addition to the competition, one editing workshop and photo-tour
were planned, as follow-up project activities. During Trace of Soul 2017
photo competition, 2399 photographs of protected natural sights and
immovable cultural and historical monuments from Republic of Srpska were
collected. We are working on a report, so soon enough we will be able to
publish more information and details related to the implementation of the
project itself. Until then, the photos, winning photos, as well as the
photos of the activities that have been realized can be viewed here
<https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Trace_of_Soul_2017>. The
exhibition of photographs was held at the Museum of Republika Srpska in
Banja Luka - which we are especially proud of because of difficulties we
faced in attempts to reach this institution and establish cooperation with
them. We were persistent, eloquently explained our case and importance of
the project itself and finally managed achieve our goal! We are at your
disposal for any question or suggestion!
Sincerely,
Bojana

*Замислите свет у коме свака особа на планети има слободан приступ

Great to hear!
I have one caveat with it though - if I understand it correctly, it is
currently in a man-in-the-middle position between the visitor and WMF,
as it provides its own self-signed https certificate and performs
various URL rewriting on the traffic to change the URLs to the onion
domain.
Isn't it more secure, then, to just use Tor to access the main
(clearnet) Wikipedia, since it enforces correct HTTPS?
Using Tor <-> clearnet WMF (HTTPS) still provides:
1) censorship circumvention;
2) location anonymity;
3) opaque encryption between the visitor and the WMF;
The #3 is missing if the onion service is not operated by the WMF
itself.
Please correct me if I'm wrong.
I do think it's very good that such effort is taking place - but we need
to make sure there's no weak points security-wise that aren't
communicated prominently enough to the users.
Best,
Yury.

I offer $50 USD first prize and $25 for the runner-up for the best
twelve paragraph essay on the topic of whether college students are
likely to pay more in income taxes over their lifetime than the
present value of the entire amount of their college tuition, room, and
board expenses.
This contest is open only to the top 50% of participants in the
Wikimedia Education Program or WikiEd Foundation's student editors.
If there are any objections to this contest, please let me know. If
there are any reasons it shouldn't be communicated to the eligible,
please let me know. I ask both foundations to match my award, taking
the prizes to $150 and $75 if they agree. Thank you!
Sincerely,
James Salsman
I'm interested to see how we can make our conferences, not least
Wikimania, and other events more green and, particularly, use less
plastic.
I see from:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Sustainability_Initiative
that:

On February 24, 2017, the board of trustees of the Wikimedia
Foundation adopted the following resolution as a result of this
initiative:
The Wikimedia Foundation is committed to seeking ways to reduce the
impact of our activities on the environment. We aim to always act
responsibly and sustainably as possible, including favoring renewable
energy for our operations. We believe that a long-term commitment to
sustainability is an essential component of our work towards the
Wikimedia mission and vision. To this end, the Wikimedia Foundation
makes the following commitments:
* We will seek to minimize our overall impact on the environment;
* We will consider sustainability as an important part of decisions
around servers, operations, travel, offices, and other procurement;
* We will use green energy where it is available and financially prudent; and
* Starting in 2018, we will include an environmental impact statement
in our annual plan.
</quote>
for example:
* use cotton (not plastic) lanyards; or avoid lanyards altogether
* don't give away cheap plastic pens, etc.
* avoid bottled water, where tap water is potable, otherwise use glass bottles
* avoid sandwiches in plastic (or plastic-lined) packs
* avoid disposable cutlery and plastic plates
* ensure waste is collected, appropriately sorted and recycled
How can we build this into our movement?
Should it be a consideration in assessing grant funding applications?
Would a more specific resolution from the board help?
Who at WMF has oversight responsibility for these issues?

We could start plant trees at the conferences. it's also a nice social event. You can ask people who enroll if they want to pay the cost of a tree (you know CO2 footprint of a plane) and than they can plant it, with a picture.
And you can also put a bed of organic residues of food left overs from waste sorting as compost.

Dear Wikimedians,
The Funds Dissemination Committee (FDC) meets twice a year to make
recommendations about how to effectively allocate movement funds to achieve
the Wikimedia movement's mission, vision, and strategy. This is now the
11th round of allocations made by the FDC, and we met in person from
November 17-20, 2017 in Madrid to deliberate on 9 proposals submitted this
round. Wikimedia Deutschland's annual plan will be reviewed separately.
We would like to thank all of the participating organizations for the hard
work they put into this round’s proposals.
Our recommendations for Round 1 2017-2018 on the annual plan grants to the
Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees have now been posted on Meta.[1] The
Board will review our deliberations and make a decision by December 31,
2017.
We received grant requests for approximately USD 2,766,000 this round.
Before we met, committee members reviewed all of the proposals and
documents submitted. We were assisted in this review with input from the
FDC staff assessments which included analysis on impact, finances, and
programs, as well as community comments on the proposals.
As you may know, there is a formal process to submit complaints or appeals
about these recommendations. Here are the steps for both:
Any organization that would like to submit an appeal on the FDC’s
recommendation should submit it to the Board representatives to the FDC by
23:59 UTC on 8 December 2017 in accord with the appeal process outlined in
the FDC Framework [2]. A formal appeal to challenge the FDC’s
recommendation should be in the form of a 500-or-fewer word summary
directed to the two non-voting WMF Board representatives to the FDC,
Nataliia Tymkiv and Dariusz Jemielniak. The appeal should be submitted
on-wiki, and must be submitted by the Board Chair of a funding-seeking
applicant. The Wikimedia Foundation Board will publish its decision on this
and all recommendations by December 31, 2017.
Anyone can file a complaint about the FDC process [3] with the Ombudsperson
at any time. The complaint should be submitted on wiki, as well. The
Ombudsperson will publicly document the complaint, and investigate as
needed.
On behalf of the FDC,
Bishakha Datta
FDC Chair

Hello everyone,
The currently-scheduled November and December metrics meetings both fall on
popular holiday weeks in the United States and other parts of the world.
Given this, we will be combining the November and December meetings into a
single metrics meeting on *Thursday, December 14th, from 6:00 - 7:00 PM UTC
(11 AM - 12 PM PT)*.
Please stay tuned for more details on the meeting in the coming weeks!
Best,
Sam and Greg
