To whom it may interest,
Full of delight, I would like to announce the first beta release of
*StrepHit*:
https://github.com/Wikidata/StrepHit
TL;DR: StrepHit is an intelligent reading agent that understands text
and translates it into *referenced* Wikidata statements.
It is a IEG project funded by the Wikimedia Foundation.
Key features:
-Web spiders to harvest a collection of documents (corpus) from reliable
sources
-automatic corpus analysis to understand the most meaningful verbs
-sentences and semi-structured data extraction
-train a machine learning classifier via crowdsourcing
-*supervised and rule-based fact extraction from text*
-Natural Language Processing utilities
-parallel processing
You can find all the details here:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:IEG/StrepHit:_Wikidata_Statements_Va…https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:IEG/StrepHit:_Wikidata_Statements_Va…
If you like it, star it on GitHub!
Best,
Marco
Both of the two messages below got encouraging responses off-list, but I
doubt they will get Foundation support without wider discussion, and they
certainly both transcend mere Foundation public policy advocacy concerns.
Please share your thoughts!

Subject: Librarian of Congress and Copyright Royalty Board Petitions
To: Publicpolicy Group for Wikimedia <publicpolicy(a)lists.wikimedia.org
<javascript:_e(%7B%7D,'cvml','publicpolicy(a)lists.wikimedia.org');>>
How do people feel about petitioning the Librarian of Congress for a
general copyright exemption for API header files and documentation in
light of the recent Oracle vs. Google Android Java verdict?
Has the Foundation already petitioned or supported a petition for a
general copyright exemption of taxpayer-funded research?
I think it is very clear we should certainly do both if we haven't already.
Even better, how about petitioning the three federal judges comprising
the Copyright Royalty Board to institute a sliding scale for audio
royalty distributions so that the market supports the 1970s era
pre-mass consumer copying levels of artist demand? The CRB can return
both wages for songwriters and musicians as a percentage of GDP and
royalty distribution incidence in terms of new, small, developing, and
established (e.g. top-40) artists to pre-mass piracy levels by issuing
a sliding scale royalty schedule, which controls what YouTube,
Spotify, Pandora, Apple, etc., pay when people legally stream music.

Hi all, I'm Pax aka Funcrunch [1]. I've been a Wikipedian since 2008,
but this is my first post to this mailing list. (I've been reading list
messages on the archives page occasionally for the last several months.)
I'm writing because of a concern I have about the community's attitude
toward harassment on Wikipedia. I got a Wikinotice about this month's
Inspire Campaign, which specifically asks: "What ideas do you have that
can help prevent and generally address cases of harassment?" [2] As a
victim of several of the harassing behaviors mentioned as examples - "
name calling, threats, discrimination, stalking, and impersonation" - I
was encouraged to see that this problem was (hopefully) being taken
seriously by the Foundation, and submitted a proposal.
Looking at the other proposals submitted, I soon noticed that the most
popular "ideas" on the list included complaints of "political
correctness" and suggesting we shouldn't be so sensitive [3], and that
we should just get some sleep and exercise and reconsider why we're so
offended. [4] (That first "idea" has since been recategorized by a WMF
staffer to remove it from the current campaign.)
It really bothers me that a campaign specifically designed to combat
harassment - which is a very serious and real problem for people of
marginalized identities like myself [5]- is being co-opted by people
saying things like " Harassment doesn't cause actual damage," " The
existence of harassment is an opportunity to improve ourselves further
through self-discipline," and " Harassment on Wikimedia has been
exaggerated." I suggest that people who honestly believe this, but are
willing to accept that they might be wrong, read a recent essay about
online harassment by Anil Dash: "The Immortal Myths About Online Abuse." [6]
I'm not "looking to be offended," and I'm not trying to "censor" people
who simply disagree with me. I'm trying to help build an encyclopedia,
without being harassed by block-evading stalkers hurling hate speech my
way. The existing tools and policies are *not* sufficient to deal with
this. That's (what I thought was) the point of this Inspire campaign,
not complaining about censorship and " crybullying."
I've posted a much shorter version of this concern on the Inspire
Campaign talk page [7], so feel free to weigh in there instead of here
on the list if that's more appropriate. Thank you for reading.

Subject: Looking for a great person to do the community communication
around Wikidata
To: Discussion list for the Wikidata project. <wikidata(a)lists.wikimedia.org>
Hey everyone :)
Over the past 4 years - since the beginning of the development - I have
been doing the community communications around Wikidata. The main
objectives being that there is good communication between the editors, the
development team and everyone else around Wikidata and that the project is
a healthy and welcoming place. Since then Wikidata has grown massively and
I have also taken on the product management for Wikidata. Both tasks are
getting too big to be handled by one person while still giving editors and
the development team the attention they deserve. Because of this I am now
looking to hire someone who takes over the community communications part. I
hope we can find an enthusiastic and knowledgeable person who can support
you all.
The job add is here:
https://wikimedia.de/wiki/Project_Manager_(m/f)_Community_Communication_Wik…
If
you have any questions feel free to reach out to me. If you know someone
who would be a good fit please do reach out to them and encourage them to
apply.
Cheers
Lydia
PS: Don't worry. I'll still be around and available to you all but focusing
more on the product management. Wikidata and you all are still very
precious to me.

----------
Dear Wikimedia friends,
In April, Wikimedia Deutschland hosted the Wikimedia Conference 2016 in
Berlin.[1] y job as the Program and Engagement Coordinator is – besides
creating the program – to make this conference more sustainable and secure
continuous participation of everyone involved.[2] My primary assignment is
to support the participants and speakers. But it’s more than that: My task
is to ensure and monitor that essential conference topics are constantly
being worked on and further developed.
The first step for your further engagement is the documentation of the
sessions. I’m happy to announce that I just have published it on Meta:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Conference_2016/Documentation and
Follow-Up
Based on the notes of the volunteer notetakers, I have summarised the
conversations and discussions of most of the sessions. Many sessions have a
“How to move forward” box where you can see the next steps agreed upon at
the conference and contact persons to reach out to. The documentation is
not only a valuable resource for participants, but should also provide
those who did not attend with insights and inspiration.
During the pre-conference Thursday of Wikimania 2016, Nicole and I will
host a “WMCON Follow-Up Day” where will work further on the main topics of
the Wikimedia Conference. I’ll publish more details about this day in the
upcoming days.
Additionally, our Evaluation team has published the WMCON evaluation based
on the post-survey we asked participants to fill out.[3] Thanks to all
participants who have rated the Wikimedia Conference extraordinary well:
67% of the participants said the conference was ‘excellent’, 32% rated it
as ‘good’. Wow! You can find further details and opinions in the evaluation
report.[3]
An overall report of the Wikimedia Conference including the Program and
Engagement Coordination as well as lessons learned will be published by the
end of July.
If you have any remarks, comments or feedback, please don’t hesitate to get
in touch with me.
Best regards from Berlin,
Cornelius

Hi folks,
I'm working on an essay about good finance practices for WMF and Wikimedia
affiliates. I'm also working on some further questions regarding WMF
finances. I imagine that the essay and the collection of questions will be
ready in 1 to 3 weeks. In the meantime, if people would like to provide
comments or questions anonymously, I'm happy to consider including them in
my future posts. I am doing this entirely in my personal capacity and no
one is obligated to get involved; I just thought that people might like to
know about work that's happening off-list and that there are opportunities
to be involved anonymously.
