Dear all,
It is my pleasure to announce the recognition of a new Wikimedia User
Group in the United States: Kentucky Wikimedians [1]
Their efforts are focused on providing support to those in Kentucky who
are interested in creating and expanding content in the different
Wikimedia projects. They have already organized some meetups and plan to
expand their activities in the state.
Welcome!

Congrats all, and thank you Patricio. I'll observe that it is interesting
that the Board chose Christophe as Chair on his first day as a member, I
think that is unprecedented in the short history of the WMF Board.

Hi Wikimaniacs!
Wikimania is just around the corner and many people looking forward to the
wide range of topics. Following the general idea of sharing knowledge about
best practices, the Volunteer Support Department of Wikimedia Deutschland
warmly invites you to the pre-conference workshops “Engaging local
Wikipedians” and “German Wikipedia”.
*“Engaging local Wikipedians” workshop*
The German Chapter supports several groups with the installation, funding,
and support of local spaces where community members can sozialize, write
articles, plan projects, share knowledge, start cooperations, teach new
editors, and so one. These are places where Wikipedians have a face.
Several local groups will hold lightning talks about their activities.
Further, a study by Wikimedia Deutschland on the local spaces will be
presented. Nevertheless, getting local Wikipedians together does not only
work in actual rooms but in several other ways, fitting to the respective
needs of the communities and general conditions. One solution for example
is the Kumusha Bus that educates several communities in Africa about the
Open Movement. Of course, organizing student groups for Wikipedia in
several cities is another one.
We warmly invite you to share your experiences in this workshop. Learning
from each other is the main goal of this workshop.
Basic information for “Engaging local Wikipedians” workshop:
- Date: Thursday, 23 June
- Time: 9.30–13.00
- Place: Villa Rogo (20 min away from the center)
- Find more information on
https://wikimania2016.wikimedia.org/wiki/Workshop:_Engaging_local_Wikipedia…
*“German Wikipedia” workshop*
The community of the German-language Wikipedia is one of the most active
ones in the Wikiverse. Several volunteers will attend Wikimania this year
and prepared presentations on a broad variety of topics they are interested
in, from a presentation of the Young Wikipedians group to a photography
workshop focused on flashes.
They warmly invite you into the German house, the Villa Rogo, to the
“German Wikipedia” workshop that follows the previous “Engaging local
Wikipedians” workshop (we plan to serve Italian pasta for you in our
kitchen ;-)).
If you ever wanted to know what the German community is doing, or when you
are curious what their affairs of the heart are, join this workshop and be
excited!
Basic information for “German Wikipedia” workshop:
- Date: Thursday, 23 June
- Time: 14.00–18.00
- Place: Villa Rogo (20 min away from the center)
- Find more information on

Hey All
We are having a medical day at Wikimania tomorrow Jun 23rd. Buses leave
from Esino Lario at 8:40 pm. This event is open to everyone. We will be
discussing some of the major initiatives we have worked on since the last
Wikimania. The location is on the lake and from what I understand is
beautiful :-)

Last month you'll remember I told you about an experiment where we used
related banner content for fundraising, an idea suggest by User:Wittylama
[1], and in that case taking the pop culture line with Game of Thrones. [2]
Unfortunately the content specific large banner saw a drop in performance
of 30% compared with the control. This adds to the additional downside in
which generating content specific banners is more intensive than the more
generic banners we use and when targeting a much much smaller audience
(>0.5% of traffic in the US), as you'd expect it results in an added lower
relative return for the resources put in.
There is still potentially merit in the idea so we're running a second
experiment, focused around the upcoming 4th July celebrations in the United
State and playing on the themes of independence. Advantages with this sort
of topic is we can test in a more free way without fear of potential
appearance of advertising or overt endorsement (Unless you happen to be the
United Kingdom in the middle of their own cessation debate).
We are going for a bolder take than our previous attempt which gives a very
different feel to the banners, I would like to think more celebratory (even
if I am myself a Brit). Here are a couple of the ideas we are working with
(please be aware these banners are desktop specific):
* Fireworks -
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Independence_Day_%28United_States%29?force=1&…
* US Flags -
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Independence_Day_%28United_States%29?force=1&…
These *won't *be appearing across the website and will *only* be showing on
on pages specific relating to the 4th July holiday and the American
Deceleration of Independence [3] and *only* in the United States. All the
images being tested were all sourced from Commons and are attributed within
the banners. We expect these banners to be going up from the 30th June -
4th July over the holiday weekend.
Again, if you have any ideas you would like to suggest about either our
process or banner ideas feel free to contribute on our fundraising ideas
page. [4]

Hello everyone!
The Wikimedia Brazilian Group of Education and Research[1] will host on October 13th and 14th in Rio de Janeiro the "1st Brazilian Wikipedia Science Conference"
This event aims to bring together students, teachers and researchers with projects and publications about Wikipedia, other Wikimedia projects and their dynamics.
We are almost done and soon we will announce our official website and call for papers. Articles and poster will be accepted.
The Wikimedia Foundation has validated our logo [2] and the use of the Wikipedia brand in the event name.
We are using as inspiration the events organized by Wikimedia UK[3] and OpenSym[4].
We are trying to bring to Brazil some important keynotes from our movement. If someone from this list is interested in coming to visit us, let's keep in touch!
That event is under organization in a very organic and experimental way, with no funding from WMF to see the impact and interest from the local academic community. Based on the results and impacts we will try to do something bigger in 2017.
All the content produced during the event will be published in CC licenses (photos, videos, interviews, publications).
Soon we will have more news! You can check our planning page here[5]

Congratulations to both WMF and Delphine, this is a very good move.
Just curious: Will Delphine and family now be moving to SF or will you be
working from remote mostly?
Greetings
Ting
