Dear Ido.
I share your concern about these problems and thanks for exercising your right to voice your concerns. I'm a bit worried about the potentially devastating effects of these problems on the Wikimedia Projects. Personally, I don't want to have any reason to lose confidence in the BoT but I think the community deserves clarity on certain issues. Volunteers and affiliates are major backbones of the Wikimedia Foundation and they need to understand why certain decision is taken by the WMF. I probably do not understand why the BoT decided to remain silent on pertinent issues raised here over a month now. This is worrisome and heartbreaking.
Best,
Olatunde Isaac

Hi Ido,
your email is interesting and reveals an important issue: the governance of
a no for profit organization is a little bit different from that of a
"commercial" company.
In my opinion there is an unclear definition of the stakeholders and the
definition of the importance of these stakeholders and the relations they
have.
Missing a clear definition of these entities and how they are related and
what kind of potential conflicts can be generated by them, it can only
drive to the current picture.
Kind regards

Thanks Ido.
For what is worth, and in my personal capacity (I'm not affiliated with
Wikimedia Italia any more) I completely second your concern,
Discussions are ongoing from months now and BoT seems frozen in silence.
People really don't understand why.
I would also like to thank you for expressing it in such a delicate, polite
but clear tone.

Thanks Ido for your thoughtful email, which I wholeheartedly support.
I like very much your email because it voices what I think many
Wikimedians are feeling but may not be keen on expressing themselves
publicly.

I share this concern completely.
The only thing I would add to what Ido said is: is there a way that we
- as a community - could help?
Remember that the community is not only a shareholder but also the
greatest asset we have.

Hi all,
Earlier this week Amy Elder -- our head of recruiting -- has shared a
preview of the CTO role with the staff and I would like to share it with
you early as well, before the job description is posted and the process
starts. I am very grateful to our technical staff and leaders here at the
WMF for collaborating on both the description and the process.
If you have any nominations or recommendations, which I hope you will
please email Amy directly.
Thank you all for engaging.

Hi Everyone,
We are excited to announce the launch of our search for a Chief Technology
Officer, and proud to confirm this search is being handled internally by
our very own WMF Recruiting Department.
As we greatly value and respect your opinion, we are contacting you for
your candidate nominations/referrals. We are also open to hearing any
related suggestions or comments in general on the job description as minor
changes can still happen (this is not a call for mass edits).
Please see the below link for a preview of the job description. The entire
technical team has been deeply focused on collaborating and contributing to
this (nearly finished) draft.
If you have nominations please let me over the next few days.
With appreciation,
Amy

Dear colleagues,
These are difficult and confusing times. Many of you are puzzled or
receiving partial and possibly contradictory bits and pieces of news.
As a service to the community, I feel I must point out that significantly
more conversation is taking place -- for whatever reason -- on the (public)
Wikipedia Weekly facebook group[1].
Without endorsing that choice of venue (the issues with Facebook are fairly
well-known), it does appear that if you want significantly more
information, you should head on over there and read through the last couple
of weeks' posts. (much information is in the comments)
(if you are inspired to collect and preserve useful information from there
on Meta, that would be best.)
In solidarity,
Asaf

It is not only people who speak English as a second language who are likely
confused. The confusion comes partly from the fact that we have an ED and
some board members saying one thing and official documents submitted to a
funder saying something different. These two sources of information about
"Wikipedia search" do not appear to be reconcilable.
We then have the partly related issue of low moral among WMF staff. This
has led to some people leaving and others taking time off. Many within the
foundation do not feel they can speak freely due to potential retaliation
from the ED. Many people are therefore being cautious with their words.
I agree we need to speak clearly, simply, and openly. We should also invite
the Knight Foundation to join this conversation. We need to get a few more
perspectives on the issues in front of us.

I may have an unpopular view here, but when an author has been murdered, especially one so young, I find it distasteful to try to make that a test case re copyright. If Anne Frank hadn't been murdered she might well still be alive today, and presumably her work would still be in copyright.
By all means we should be encouraging people to freely license things openly, and arguing for open licensing against those who claim copyright on faithful copies of out of copyright work, and for freedom of panorama in countries less open about such things than Armenia or the UK.
I'm sort of OK about as Michael Maggs put it using it to "increase awareness of the excessive length (95 years) of some US copyright terms." Though I'd hope there are other examples where we don't look like taking advantage of the murder of a child. I'm also OK with using this as an example of us taking copyright seriously.
But though it is an important work, is it really one we should be trying to force into the open against the wishes of a charity set up by her relatives?

Jonathan/WereSpielChequers
Just copying part of Andreas's comment from another thread:
"...can the board now please come to a decision on whether the Knight
Foundation grant letter and grant application documents will be posted on
Meta, and if not, provide an explanation to the community why they cannot
be made public?
"To recap, Jimmy Wales said over two weeks ago on his talk page[1] that in
his opinion the documentation should be posted on Meta, to clear the air
around this issue. However, nothing appears to have happened since then."

Dear friends and colleagues,
I’ve had the amazing privilege of serving this movement in a staff capacity
for the past 4 ½ years, but I’ve now decided to move on from my role at the
Wikimedia Foundation.
Transparency, integrity, community and free knowledge remain deeply
important to me, and I believe I will be better placed to represent those
values in a volunteer capacity at this time. I am and will always remain a
Wikimedian, so you'll still see me around the projects (User:Seeeko),
hopefully with renewed energy and joy in volunteering.
This movement has become my home in so many unexpected ways, and I’m truly
honored to have learned from so many of you. It was an amazing experience
to have partnered with smart, bold, and dedicated community folks to
experiment with projects like Teahouse, IdeaLab, Inspire, Individual
Engagement Grants, and Reimagining Grants. I’ve seen you create some really
incredible content, ideas, tools, programs, processes, committees and
organizations, all in the service of free knowledge.
I expect my last day to be Thursday, February 25th. I have full confidence
in Maggie Dennis's abilities to lead the Community Engagement Department,
and I trust that my team will remain available to support the community’s
needs for grants and other resources throughout this time of transition.
Much love,
Siko
