Hello everyone,
As you may already know, the Wikipedia store has been relaunched with new
merchandise and designs. This May, we will be running a short campaign
spreading the word about the store to those who have not had an opportunity
to check it out. We are scheduled to run 2 sets of pre-test (2 hours each)
in May and then run a longer campaign at the end of May, beginning of
June. This will result in the display of a small banner at the top of
English Wikipedia pages just as a casual reminder that we’ve got 10% off at
the Wikipedia store with the code NEWSTORE.
While the promotion will only be displayed for anonymous users in the US
and Canada, all international and logged-in users are welcome to order
through the store and reap the benefits of the discount. After we work out
the kinks in this campaign, we’ll investigate the possibility of similar
international campaigns in the future. The banner is set to show up to each
user only two times. And remember, if you get tired of seeing the
notification, just click the “X” on the banner and it will disappear.
As always, the proceeds from our online store go toward community
engagement and our

helping us to recognize fabulous editors and contributors who have played
an instrumental role in making Wikipedia and its sister projects what they
are today.
If you have any questions about the online store or would like to provide
feedback, feel free to email us at merchandise(a)wikimedia.org.

Hello my friends,
Yesterday we have updated the tool developed by our team for the WIki Loves
Earth 2014.
So, from now you can see the numbers and statistics of the WLE 2015 through
the link https://tools.wmflabs.org/ptwikis/WLE2015
In general, the numbers are increasing very well based on the current
average.
The WLE Brasil 2015 is going very well too, with the new users engagement
near 96% of the total of participants(bringing 554 new users to Commons)
and more than 3.000 photos.
Contributions and suggestions are welcome.

Hello, Wikimedians,
As part of the proposal review for the annual plan grants program, the staff
proposal assessments have now been posted on Meta for all proposals in
2014-2015 Round 2. The proposal assessments are each linked to from the
"Proposals" page for this round. [1]
As background, the Funds Dissemination Committee (FDC) makes recommendations
to the Board of Trustees about how to allocate Wikimedia movement funds in the
form of annual plan grants to support organizations overall annual plan to
achieve mission objectives. Visit the Annual Plan Grants (APG) portal on
Meta for more information about the committee and the process. [2]
These staff proposal assessments are an input into the FDC's decision-making
process. With this round's assessments, the FDC staff have included a more
detailed explanation of our methodology. The form was refined after the
first two years of the FDC process, consists of three parts: (1) Overview,
including a financial summary and a summary of strengths and concerns; (2)
Staff proposal assessment narrative, including a nuanced analysis of the
programs, context, and the feasibility of each plan; and (3) Staff proposal
assessment rubric, assessing each proposal across three dimensions by
identifying areas of strength and concern. More about the rubric is here.
[3]
The assessments reflect the work of FDC staff who read the proposals, review
past and current reports, receive internal input from WMF finance,
education, learning and evaluation, legal, and community resources teams,
and consider a portfolio view across all proposals in this round. These
assessments do not reflect the analysis or views of the FDC or any of its
individual members.
What's next: The FDC will meet from 12 May to 14 May in Berlin to deliberate
on these proposals, and will consider these staff proposal assessments along
with other inputs into the FDC process. For more information about the
purpose of these assessments and how they fit into the FDC process overall,
see the FDC's Framework. [4] They will make their recommendations to the
Board of Trustees of the WMF on 1 June 2015, and the Board will make its
decision about these recommendations by 1 July 2015. For more about the
upcoming milestones, please visit the APG calendar. [5]
We welcome discussion about individual assessments on the discussion page
of each assessment, or discussion about the process overall on
the portal. [6] We also thank all the organizations who have applied for
funding this round, for their proposals and annual plans.
Warmly,
Katy Love

Dear Wikimedia friends,
I am delighted to share the recommendations from our recent Governance
Review with you.
WMDE board and executive level staff initiated this process in spring
2014. Admitting that some organizational structures and processes had
not evolved along with the size and scope of Wikimedia Deutschland in
the first place was a crucial step for us. Getting an external
consulting firm to support us on the way towards shaping these
structures for the next decade was the other essential component. We
felt that sharing our experiences and these recommendations can be quite
valuable for other organizations as well. Therefore, we gladly follow
the example of WMUK to share our organizational knowledge for the
benefit of the movement.
The whole report was released last month. We have presented the main
insights at our General Assembly and are currently collecting feedback
on our members’ wiki.[1] A translated version of the essential part of
the report, the recommendations, is now available on Meta in English.[2]
At the moment, we are outlining ways to proceed with the
recommendations. While we share most of them, some need further
assessment. We have already implemented a few of them (like two year
board terms, restructuring of the board committees), some are processed
by different board committees and stakeholders and prepared for the next
general assembly and some need to go through a more thorough and
long-term approach (like revising our bylaws and internal regulations).
I will provide further updates on the process. In the meantime, all your
comments and questions are more than welcome, either on Meta or via
email. Those of you who attend the Wikimedia Conference will also have
the chance to discuss this in person with me and my colleagues in Berlin
this week.
Best regards,
Tim Moritz Hector

Greetings, Wikimedia colleagues!
In November 2014, we launched a pilot self-assessment tool for Wikimedia
organizations to help us identify areas where we as Wikimedia organizations
might leverage our strengths and address our challenges to achieve better
results. We have some aggregate data available from organizations that took
the questionnaire.
To learn more about organizational effectiveness:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Organizational_effectiveness
Review the benchmarking research here:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Organizational_effectiveness/Benchmarking
Read the case studies here:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Organizational_effectiveness/Case_studies
Review the results from the tool here:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Organizational_effectiveness/Tool/Results/2…
*A little background on organizational effectiveness*
We are looking at how organizations are achieving impact in the Wikimedia
movement. Organizational effectiveness includes all the things that make an
organization good at what it does, from strong leadership and systems, to
how an organization chooses and does programs that lead to results. Through
this lens, we are looking specifically at groups and organizations, so we
can understand how volunteers and staff work together when they are part of
a group or organization.
*Why we care*
Improving organizational effectiveness is a way for Wikimedia organizations
to achieve results, in ways that make sense in their local contexts.
*The tool and the results, in brief*
We are exploring this topic of organizational effectiveness in order to
launch a broader conversation among Wikimedia organizations (e.g. Chapters,
User Groups) to explore areas for building capacity. We have started by
doing some initial benchmarking research and case studies to understand how
effectiveness is understood within Wikimedia and similar movements, and we
launched a pilot organizational effectiveness self-assessment tool, to help
organizations identify their strengths and challenges in November 2014.
This tool includes a questionnaire that is part of a self-assessment.
While individual and organization results are kept confidential, our
partners at the TCC Group provided us with some aggregate data based on the
first round of answers to the questionnaire that is a part of the tool. The
primary purpose of the questionnaire is to aid organizations in their
self-assessments, and not to gather data about organizations; however, the
data the TCC Group collected may be useful in launching further
conversations because it highlights where Wikimedia organizations see their
own strengths and challenges.
*Next steps for organizational effectiveness for Wikimedia organizations*
We are hosting a discussion about the organizational effectiveness tool for
Wikimedia organizations at the upcoming Wikimedia Conference in Berlin, and
will also continue a discussion there about the future of organizational
effectiveness for Wikimedia organizations. Topics to explore within
organizational effectiveness might include areas like volunteer engagement,
raising funds and other resources, supporting online contributors, media
relations, financial management, governance, etc.
*Key questions:*
*What future work are we interested in doing together around organizational
effectiveness?
*Is a self-assessment tool useful for organizations? Should we gather
feedback and work toward improving the tool, or try another approach? Does
the tool need to remain confidential?
*Are there specific topics in the area of organizational effectiveness that
need more exploration? Are there areas where we need more resources?
*Is there anything important revealed by this research or the results of
the questionnaire that we can use to better understand how we can grow?
*Call to action:*
Please offer your feedback, thoughts, and questions on Meta, or participate
in the upcoming discussions at the Wikimedia Conference. If you are
interested in discussing this work, or becoming more involved, but are
unable to attend the session at the conference, we are happy to convene a
hangout or an IRC office hours. Please also feel welcome to contact me
directly if you have ideas about this work, or add your ideas to Meta.
Many thanks to our colleagues Marieke Spence, Rika Gorn, and Deepti Sood,
at the TCC Group (a consulting firm that specializes in organizational
assessments), who created the tool and analyzed the results. Many thanks to
the volunteers and staff who participated, and have provided feedback so
far. Thanks especially to those organizations participating in the pilot
group, the case studies, and in the ongoing conversations about
organizational development and effectiveness at Wikimania and other
movement events.
We look forward to more work together in this area!
Best regards,
Winifred Olliff

The Wikimedia Nederland chapter report on March and April is available on
meta:

It is also included in this message as plain text.
COMMUNITY AND PARTICIPATION
*Mediatraining
Seven volunteers took part in a one-day training organized by WMNL on
working with the media. They learned about framing messages, dealing with
tricky questions and practiced being interviewed on camera. We were
particularly happy that two volunteers from our sister chapter Wikimedia
Belgie could join us.
CONTENT
*Education program
The first trainee from ITV - College for translators and interpreters
started work in April. At the request of the Wikipedia-community she will
translate Wikipedia articles from German into Dutch. A second trainee will
start soon, translating articles from the Russian Wikipedia.
*World War II
WMNL partner NIOD Institute for War, Holocaust and Genocide Studies, has
integrated cooperating with and contributing to the Wikimedia projects in
their regular workprogramme for 2015. They are starting on a programme
World War II on Wikipedia, which will aim to release content of monographs
and reference works for the Wikimedia projects, and stimulate its use via
editathons and online activities. A programme start-up meeting was held on
April 24. A second meeting was held on April 29 to locate contents in the
NIOD archives that are suitable for release on Wikimedia projects, and that
are within the scope of World War II. The NIOD expects this program to run
until November 2015 and to include an editathon. The results will be
evaluated at that time, and any follow-up for 2016 will be based on the
evaluation outcome.
*Project Nature
De Vlinderstichting (Butterfly Foundation) released its information on
dragonflies and damsels under a Creative Commons license. It is being used
to improve content on these species on Wikipedia. This proJect is a test
for other content and data donations concerning bigger species groups.
The national museum for natural history Naturalis appointed Hans Muller as
Wikipedian in Residence. He will work for Naturalis for six months,
cooperating closely with the WMNL Project Nature group.
*Gendergap
The Netherlands actively participated in the worldwide Art+Feminism
campaign on 7 and 8 March. We held three edit-a-thons (one at Stedelijk
Museum Amsterdam, one at Bonnefantenmuseum Maastricht, one at Lloyd Hotel
in Amsterdam). On the Dutch Wikipedia, 53 articles on women were added.
There were also many Wikidata items added in the case of new articles not
previously existing in any other language. On March 8 there was an
editathon at the editorial offices of Dutch feminist magazine Opzij. The
aim there was to write articles about the 1001 historically important women
listed in the Vrouwenlexikon (Lexicon of Women) by Els Kloek.
*GLAM-WIKI 2015
On 10, 11, + 12 April 145 participants from 32 countries came to The Hague
for GLAMWIKI 2015 conference. The National Library and the National
Archives provided the venue for this event. Aim: to exchange ideas and
experiences, give and get inspiration and send out the message that
cooperation between GLAMs and Wikimedia is important. The atmosphere was
lively and creative: already during the conference new ideas were born.
*Wikipedia in the Museum: Wikipedia-touch screen information for museums
WMNL developed an app that makes it easy for museums to provide extra
information for their visitors. Via a tablet, visitors can access a number
of pre-selected relevant Wikipedia articles - in different languages. The
app is designed to present the Wikipedia articles in an attractive way,
with a lot of attention for images. The app is integrated in a column which
clearly indicated that this information comes from Wikipedia. Two of these
columns are now being tried out in the Catharijne Convent Museum for
religious art and the Textile Museum in Tilburg. The code will of course be
made available for the Wikimedia community, and other interested parties.
*Writing event following content donation Museum Catharijne Convent
March 12 we organised a writing event around the content donation of 2500
images of religious art by the Museum Catharijne Convent.
*Writing events Textile Museum
Hay Kranen gave a workshop on (editing) Wikipedia at the Textile Museum in
Tilburg on 2 April. Around a dozen employees of the museum and other GLAM
institutions located in Tilburg were present. Apart from a general
introduction to the various Wikimedia projects, there was room for actual
editing. The Wikipedia in the Museum app (see above) was tested as well.
*Startup meetings
In April 2015, WMNL has held several meetings to prepare new GLAM projects.
-On 23 April, a meeting was held at the collection department of
Rijksmuseum Amsterdam, to discuss possible collaboration projects. A
programme proposal will be written in the upcoming months, which first
needs to be reviewed and approved by the Rijksmuseum's directors.
-Stadsarchief Rotterdam, the public library of Rotterdam, and Museum
Rotterdam are interested in a collaboration project about Rotterdam's
history on Wikimedia projects. After a first meeting in April, the three
institutions have agreed to work on an internal project proposal.
-Stedelijk Museum Schiedam is the city museum of Schiedam, near Rotterdam,
NL. The museum is interested in doing a small image donation and an
edit-a-thon related to its collections, which will be organised in the
upcoming months.
-The Tropenmuseum, a long-time partner of the Wikimedia movement, has
merged with two other Dutch museums that deal with global cultures (Museum
Volkenkunde and Afrika Museum). As the new Nationaal Museum van
Wereldculturen, the three institutions are interested to continue working
with Wikimedia projects. The Tropenmuseum project page on Wikimedia Commons
is being updated while strategic negotiations between the museum's
management and Wikimedia Nederland are planned for the upcoming months.
COMMUNICATION AND PUBLICITY
*Campaign
During February and March Wikimedia Nederland ran a ad-campaign on social
media to draw attention to the fact that Wikipedia is a non-commercial,
volunteer-led project. The ads can be viewed here. A specially designed
landing page was visited 13,800 times during the campaign. The ads were
displayed on the Google Display Network, Facebook and Twitter. On Facebook
this yielded 172 836 views and 2,733 clicks. The Google Display Network
provided the most clicks to the landing page but proved inferior than the
traffic from Facebook and Twitter. This campaign was a first experiment
targetting the wider public via social media. We will share our learning
experiences with the Wikimedia community later in May.
*Newsletter
The WMNL newsletter for March and April were sent out to the subscribers.
*Survey among editing community and Wikipedia users
We have started preparations for a survey which will give insight in the
experiences and opinions of the Wikipedia community, especially regarding
workload, working climate, conflictresolution and other aspects of
community health. This will be a follow-up to the survey we did in 2013. We
are planning to run the survey late May or early June.
GOVERNANCE AND ORGANIZATION
*New staff
April 1, Arne Wossink started work as project coordinator at WMNL.
*General assembly
The General Assembly of Wikimedia Nederland took place on April 18. The
members approved the annual report and audited accounts. Also a new Board
was elected: Board Members Marlon The, André Engels and Ronn Boef were
replaced by Bart Nieuwenhuis, Marike van Roon and Harriet de Man.
