Subject: Just say no to TPP
Creative Commons
After five years of secret negotiations between governments and corporate
lobbyists, the public has finally seen the text of the Trans-Pacific
Partnership (TPP), and the details are bad.
The provisions covering intellectual property directly threaten the public
interest and the commons. We believe the TPP should be rejected, and we need
everyone opposed to this attack on the commons to stand with us.
Add your name to oppose the TPP!
<https://donate.creativecommons.org/sites/all/modules/civicrm/extern/url.php…>
The TPP increases the term of copyright an additional 20 years for half of the
participating countries. This makes no sense. Copyright already lasts far
longer than is necessary—life of the author plus 50 years in most parts of the
world.
And extending copyright has real costs. New Zealand estimates that lengthening
copyright will cost the public $55 million per year. In Canada, it could exceed
$100 million per year.
The public is losing out when millions of creative works are kept locked up
under copyright instead of rising into the public domain, where they can be
used freely by anyone.
It’s not too late to make your voice heard. The participating governments now
have to decide whether to ratify it.
We think the TPP should be rejected. Do you agree?
Only a groundswell of opposition can stop the TPP, and it starts with your
signature and comments against the harmful TPP. Sign today!

Subject: [Wikimedia Announcements] FDC recommendations for 2015-2016 Round
1 APG grant requests
To: wikimediaannounce-l(a)lists.wikimedia.org
Hello Wikimedians,
tl;dr: The FDC’s recommendations for this round of the APG grant requests
have now been published at:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:APG/FDC_portal/FDC_recommendations/2…
The Funds Dissemination Committee (FDC) meets twice a year to help make
decisions about how to effectively allocate movement funds to achieve the
Wikimedia movement's mission, vision, and strategy. [1] We met for four
days last week in San Francisco to review 11 proposals submitted for this
round of funding. [2]
The committee has now posted our Round 1 2015-2016 recommendations on the
annual plan grants (APG) to the Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees. [3]
The WMF Board representatives to the FDC (Denny Vrandecic, Jan-Bart de
Vreede and Dariusz Jemielniak) will lead the Board in its review of these
recommendations. The WMF Board will review the recommendations and then
make their decision on them before 1 January 2016.
This round, the eleven proposals came from ten chapters and one thematic
organisation, totaling requests of approximately $3.8 million USD. Ten
affiliates were returning to the APG program, and one was a new applicant.
This round, one organisation requested a restricted grant to support one
particular program. All other grant requests were for general funding.
Before we met for our face-to-face deliberations, the FDC carefully
reviewed all proposals and supporting documentation (e.g., budgets, plans,
strategies) in detail, aided by staff assessments and analysis on impact,
finances, and programs, as well as community comments on the proposals. The
committee had long and intense conversations about the proposals submitted
this round. By listening and carefully considering all available data, the
committee achieved consensus on all proposal deliberations.
In addition to the above, the FDC has also included a recommendation about
the WMF itself to improve its own level of planning transparency and budget
detail. The WMF staff were not involved in the conception or writing of
this additional recommendation.
For your reference, there is a formal process to submit appeals about these
recommendations or complaints about the FDC process. The processes for both
are outlined below.
Any applicant that wants to appeal the FDC’s recommendation about their
proposal this round should submit it by 23:59 UTC on 8 December 2015 in
accordance with the appeal process outlined in the FDC Framework. A formal
appeal to challenge the FDC’s recommendation should be in the form of a
500-or-fewer word summary. The appeal should be submitted on-wiki, [4] and
must be submitted by the Board Chair of a funding-seeking applicant.
Complaints about the process can be filed by anyone with the Ombudsperson,
and can be made any time. The complaint should be submitted on wiki, as
well. [5] The ombudsperson will publicly document the complaint, and
investigate as needed.
Please take a look at the upcoming calendar [6] to learn about other
upcoming milestones in the APG program.
Again, we offer our sincere thanks to the 11 organisations who submitted
annual plan grant proposals to the FDC this round.
On behalf of the FDC,
Matanya Moses (FDC chair), User:Matanya

This is such a sad news. I have been following news about him and i can't believe this. This is a black day in the history of Human Civilization. We can indeed do little things like sharing posts about him and writing about him because that is all we can do perhaps.

> ********************************************
Hi all,
We are just a few weeks away from the launch of the December English
fundraiser. The end of the year is the most critical time of the year for
Wikimedia’s fundraising: The goal this year is $25 million. The campaign
will launch in the US, UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and Ireland on Giving
Tuesday <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Giving_Tuesday>, December 1st.
In these past months of preparation, we have relied on feedback from the
volunteer community, readers, and staff through discussion pages, feedback
sessions, phone calls, interviews, user testing, surveys and A/B tests.
Thank you to everyone for participating! It has truly been a helpful
experience and wonderful to hear from so many voices from all different
parts of the movement.
In just the last two weeks, an independent research firm conducted a new
survey of Wikipedia readers. (You may remember that we did a similar survey
last February.) We heard from you last spring that there were some
additional concerns that you would like us to explore with readers. We
tried to look into those concerns in this survey. We have uploaded the survey
report on Commons
<https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/2/25/Wikimedia_Reader_Survey…>
for anyone who is interested in reading it. We have also setup a section on
the Fundraising Meta page
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Talk:Fundraising#Reader_Survey_November_2015>
to discuss the survey.
The feedback from readers, the volunteer community and staff has been
critical to shape the campaign. Several improvements have been made so far
as a direct result of this input. We have changed a few specific sentences
of the message that were discussed heavily on meta pages and also tried a
variety of design ideas based on comments.
We also have some fresh banner ideas that came about through a recent
workshop with staff. We will be testing those new banner ideas in small
runs throughout the campaign as well. And we’re still gathering ideas! To
see the latest version of the message and submit your ideas, please visit
the fundraising ideas meta page
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Fundraising/2015-16_Fundraising_ideas>.
Since last year, we have made improvements to our banner targeting and
analytics systems with the goal of raising the budget, while limiting the
number of banners and disruption for our readers. We aim to run the
campaign for roughly two weeks at a high traffic level and then at a much
reduced level for the rest of December.
The fundraising team faces a great challenge this year: the highest revenue
target in WMF history along with a decline in page views – particularly in
desktop pageviews where readers are more likely to donate. The team has and
will continue to work hard to make improvements needed to reach this goal.
We cannot do this alone. Thank you to everyone who has offered input,
expertise, time and energy into helping make this fundraiser a success.
We look forward to your ideas and questions. Since the team experiences an
incredibly high volume of seasonal work, we will not be able to respond
immediately to questions or feedback. We will review feedback and bug
reports regularly and we have dedicated time to post an update by
mid-December and again at the end of the campaign. Here’s how to get
involved:
-
To file a bug report or technical issue, please create a phabricator
ticket
<https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/maniphest/task/create/?template=118862>
or email problemsdonating(a)wikimedia.org
-
To see the latest news from the team, see the fundraising meta page
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Fundraising>
-
To suggest a banner idea, visit the test ideas meta page
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Fundraising/2015-16_Fundraising_ideas>
-
To read the latest reader survey, see the
<https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/2/25/Wikimedia_Reader_Survey…>full
report on commons

-
To learn more about the fundraising program and last year’s campaign,
see the 2014-15 fundraising report
<https://wikimediafoundation.org/wiki/2014-2015_Fundraising_Report>
Thank you to everyone who has contributed to the campaign preparations.
More importantly, thank you to the entire Wikimedia community for building
this incredible project that readers love and support with their
donations. None of this would be possible without you.

OpenSym 2016 General Call for Submissions (Papers)
----------------------------------------------
OpenSym 2016, the 12th International Symposium on Open Collaboration
August 17-19, 2016 | Berlin, Germany
http://opensym.org/os2016
ABOUT THE CONFERENCE
----------------------------------------------
The 12th International Symposium on Open Collaboration (OpenSym 2016) is the
premier conference on open collaboration research and practice, including open
source, open data, open education, wikis and related social media, Wikipedia,
and IT-driven open innovation research.
OpenSym is the first conference series to bring together the different strands
of open collaboration research and practice, seeking to create synergies and
inspire new collaborations between computer scientists, social scientists,
legal scholars, and everyone interested in understanding open collaboration
and how it is changing the world.
OpenSym 2016 will be held in Berlin, Germany, on August 17-19, 2016.
OpenSym is held in-cooperation with ACM SIGWEB and ACM SIGSOFT and the
conference proceedings will be archived in the ACM digital library like all
prior editions.
The research paper submission deadline is March 25th, 2016.
RESEARCH TRACK CALLS FOR SUBMISSIONS
----------------------------------------------
The conference provides peer-reviewed research tracks on
- Free, libre, and open source software research, chaired by Stephan Koch,
Boğaziçi Üniversitesi, and Daniel German, University of Victoria. For more
information see
http://www.opensym.org/os2016/call-for-papers/free-libre-and-open-source-so…
- Open data research, chaired by Dirk Riehle, Friedrich-Alexander University
Erlangen-Nürnberg, and Ina Schieferdecker, Fraunhofer FOKUS and TU Berlin. For
more information see

Diaz, Universidad del Pais Vasco, and Dirk Riehle, Friedrich-Alexander
University Erlangen-Nürnberg. For more information see
http://www.opensym.org/os2016/call-for-papers/open-collaboration-research-t…
Research papers present integrative reviews or original reports of substantive
new work: theoretical, empirical, and/or in the design, development and/or
deployment of novel concepts, systems, and mechanisms. Research papers will be
reviewed by a research track program committee to meet rigorous academic
standards of publication. Papers will be reviewed for relevance, conceptual
quality, innovation and clarity of presentation.
Each track has its own call for papers, which you can find at
http://www.opensym.org/os2016/call-for-papers/. Submission deadline is March
25th, 2016.
Authors, whose submitted papers have been accepted for presentation at the
conference have a choice of
- having their paper become part of the official proceedings, archived in the
ACM Digital Library,
- having no publication record at all but only the presentation at the conference.
OpenSym seeks to accommodate the needs of the different research disciplines
it draws on.
DOCTORAL SYMPOSIUM CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS
----------------------------------------------
OpenSym seeks to explore the synergies between all strands of open
collaboration research. Thus, we will have a doctoral symposium, in which
Ph.D. students from different disciplines can present their work and receive
feedback from senior faculty and their peers.
The doctoral symposium is lead by Lutz Prechelt, Freie Universität of Berlin.
The call for papers for the doctoral symposium can be found at
http://www.opensym.org/os2016/call-for-papers/doctoral-symposium-at-opensym/.
Submission deadline is May 6th, 2016.
INDUSTRY AND COMMUNITY TRACK CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS
----------------------------------------------
OpenSym is also seeking submissions for experience reports (long and short),
tutorials, workshops, panels, industry and community posters, and demos. Such
work accepted for presentation or performance at the conference is considered
part of the community track. It will be put into the proceedings in a
community track section; authors can opt-out of the publication, as with
research papers.
The industry and community track is lead by Simon Dückert of Cogneon GmbH and
Lorraine Morgan of Maynooth University.
The call for submissions to the community track can be found at
http://www.opensym.org/os2016/call-for-papers/industry-and-community-track/.
The first submission deadline is April 22nd, 2016. A second submission
deadline for late-comers (at the risk of not getting a seat) is June 2nd, 2016.
THE OPENSYM CONFERENCE EXPERIENCE
----------------------------------------------
OpenSym 2016 will be held in Berlin on August 17-19, 2016. Research and
community presentations and performances will be accompanied by keynotes,
invited speakers, and a social program in one of the most vibrant cities on
this planet.
The open space track is a key ingredient of the event that distinguishes
OpenSym from other conferences. It is an integral part of the program that
makes it easy to talk to other researchers and practitioners and to stretch
your imagination and conversations beyond the limits of your own
subdiscipline, exposing you to the full breadth of open collaboration
research. The open space track is entirely participant-organized, is open for
everyone, and requires no submission or review.
CONFERENCE ORGANIZATION
----------------------------------------------
The general chair of the conference is Anthony "Tony" Wasserman, CMU Silicon
Valley.
Feel free to contact us with any questions you might have at info(a)opensym.org.
The conference committee can be found at

Hi all,
This is a personal note to clarify a some questions that recently came up,
specifically in the context of my role as the incoming ED.
My partner Wil and I are partners in our private lives. We have always both
been extremely independent, and we respect that in each other. That said we
have different roles: I am the Executive Director with responsibilities
towards the Foundation and the movement, and he is an independent community
member with his own voice.
I make my decisions using my own professional judgement in conjunction with
input from the community and staff. I don’t consult Wil on these matters,
ask him to do anything on my behalf or monitor his engagements with the
community. When I speak here, it is in my capacity as an ED.
Wil, on the other hand, has a very strong personal interest in the
community and agreat deal of curiosity about how the Wikimedia
projectswork. It is very important to him that he remains an
independent individual
able to speak with his own voice and ask his own questions. He does not
take direction from me. He will not work for the WMF or engage with the WMF
employees.
I hope this addresses some of the questions and draws distinction between
my role as ED and Wil’s participation as an independent member. If you have
any questions for Wil you can reach him directly. If you have any questions
for me or the WMF, you can get a hold of me by email or on my talk page.
Thanks,
Lila
Hi everyone,
There's just a few more days to add proposals on the Community Tech team's
Wishlist Survey. We're looking for the most important features and fixes
that our team can work on to help the core contributors on Wikimedia
projects.
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/2015_Community_Wishlist_Survey
We've got about 140 proposals so far, which is clearly not enough, because
there's a very good chance that we don't have yours yet. You can submit
your proposal on the survey page, and you can discuss and endorse other
people's proposals too.
The proposal phase ends on Monday, and then we'll open voting on the
proposals a week later, on November 30th.
Thanks for checking it out; I'm looking forward to seeing your ideas.
