Very interesting read (via Brandon Harris):
http://recode.net/2015/07/07/doing-something-about-the-impossible-problem-o…
"the vast majority of negative behavior ... did not originate from the
persistently negative online citizens; in fact, 87 percent of online
toxicity came from the neutral and positive citizens just having a bad day
here or there."
"... incidences of homophobia, sexism and racism ... have fallen to a
combined 2 percent of all games. Verbal abuse has dropped by more than 40
percent, and 91.6 percent of negative players change their act and never
commit another offense after just one reported penalty."
I have plenty of ideas how to apply this to Wikipedia, but I am sure Dario
and his team as well :) - and some opportunity for the communities to use
such results.
Cheers,
Denny
Thanks Nicole! Very glad to see a further increase in the level of focus of
the Wikimedia Conference and in the streamlining of the planning process

[x-posted announcement]
Hello,
The next office hour of the Wikimedia Language Engineering team is
scheduled for next Wednesday, November 25th 2015 at 13:00 UTC. Similar to
our recent office hours, this is also going to be an online discussion over
Hangout/Youtube with a simultaneous IRC conversation. Due to the limitation
of Google Hangouts, only a limited number of slots are available. Hence, do
please let us know (on the event page) if you would like to participate on
the Hangout. The IRC channel #wikimedia-office and the Q&A channel for the
youtube broadcast will be open for interactions during the session.
Our last online round-table session was held in September 2015. You can
watch the recording here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nW5l7fNeMQg
Please read below for the event details and do let us know if you have any
questions.
Thank you
Runa

Wikimedia Conference 2016 in Berlin
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Conference_2016
Date: April 21-24, 2016
Registration: December 1–January 15, 2016
Dear Wikimedians,
It is my pleasure to invite Wikimedia affiliates, the WMF Board of Trustees
and staff, the Affiliations Committee, and the Funds Dissemination
Committee to join us in Berlin for the Wikimedia Conference 2016, hosted by
Wikimedia Deutschland, from April 21-24, 2016. WMDE and WMF staff are
working together closely to make this event fun, inspiring, and productive.
WMCON16 is made possible by the financial support of WMF.
You are invited to join us for three days of working, thinking, and
learning. Bringing all movement organizations together will give us the
opportunity to incorporate diverse perspectives and experiences into the
program.
For the first time, the Wikimedia Conference will focus on one core
theme: “Movement
Impact”. Our movement is striving for the biggest possible impact on Free
Knowledge, seeking to create impactful programs, processes, and support
structures aligned with our shared mission. At the same time, “impact” is a
term that we struggle with, and for which we lack a common definition. In
Berlin, we would like to unlock the potential for better collaboration,
learning, and development in our movement – and more impact of our
movement. The thematic strands and outcomes of our 2015 conference will
feed into the new program.
You will hear more about the program design process from the curator of the
Wikimedia Conference, Nicole Ebber, and the Program and Engagement
Coordinator, Cornelius Kibelka, in the coming days. Together with Wenke
Storn and Daniela Genter from our event management team they will keep you
updated about all things program and logistics in the coming weeks and
months.
On behalf of Wikimedia Deutschland, I am looking forward to welcoming you
in Berlin in April.
Kind regards,
Christian Rickerts

Dear all,
On behalf of the Affiliations Committee, I am honoured to announce the
recognition of Punjabi Wikimedians [1] as a Wikimedia User Group.
They are a group of wikimedians who are working together in different
projects related to the Punjabi language and culture. They have already
organized a few events and activities, like the edit-a-thon on occasion
of the 13th anniversary of the Punjabi Wikipedia, another on the
International Women's day and several Wikipedia Workshops and meetups.
Welcome!!!

Hello all,
Community Advocacy at the WMF is running a month-long discussion on the
topic of harassment on our projects. This will be the first in a series -
as it is the initial discussion, we are keeping it open and broad to
encourage brainstorming and creativity.
It is currently live on Meta, and will be open until at least Dec. 16:
We encourage all to participate, share ideas, and provide feedback on the
ideas of others. Online harassment is a complex, pervasive issue, and we
can't make progress without exploring the best ways forward.
Thanks,

From time to time I see references to the 'design team' on lists and on
phabricator. But what does this really mean now? As I understood it, the
previous monolithic Design Team was essentially disbanded toward the
beginning of the year, with the designers themselves distributed amongst
the other WMF teams in order to more directly integrate their services
into the development workflow (which sounds like a pretty good idea to
me, at least, since design is such an integral part of most
development). Did this happen? According to
https://wikimediafoundation.org/wiki/Staff_and_contractors, there seem
to still be two teams now with the word 'design' in their names, Reading
Design and Design Research, though these both seem to have somewhat more
specialised functions than just general design, namely Reading (sounds
like front-end non-interactive mw stuff, the visuals perhaps?) and Research.
So what is the 'design team'? Is it one of these, though the teams only
have 5 and 4 people on them, respectively? Is it just WMF designers in
general?
As much as this is also just a plea to please be more specific, if you
have an actual answer, or if you have been saying this, please, speak
up, share your experience and where you're coming from. As confusing as
it is, I suspect a discussion of what and why this has been going on
could also clear up quite a bit.
Thanks.
