@ Pine: I am looking for someone to lead / coordinate this effort, thus me
putting up the funding offer. Yes it may require a number of developers. I
do not know where these people hang out or how to convince them to do the
work. The coordinator be required to figure this out.
@Jane: No Corenbot just looked at new pages. This is a proposal to look at
new edits as they come in. They key is looking at "NEW EDITS" as they come
in. Not 10 minutes later. Not 2 days later. This will deal with the false
positives you mention. You need to get them before other sites copy from
Wikipedia. Also Turnitin is updated a little slower than google. We would
use their database before the new content was added.
@Nemo: Turnitin has agreed to give us free access to their API keys. No
money changing hands.
@Rupert: Please see reply to Nemo. With respect to access we would want 10
years worth anyway. One is able to access closed content through google
books and scholar right now. Have you read the "memorandum of
understanding" with Turnitin? There is no link spam allowed. Some companies
are willing to do stuff that does not cost them anything because they like
the idea. Not every for profit is evil to the core. If someone can build an
effective system another way that is even more open than this the money is
still theirs.

Come across another few thousand edits of copy and paste violations again
today. These have occurred over more than a year. It is wearing me out.
Really what is the point on collaborating on Wikipedia if it is simply a
copyright violation. We need a solution and one has been proposed here a
couple of years ago https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Turnitin
We now need programmers to carry it out. The Wiki Education Foundation has
expressed interest. We will need support from the foundation as this
software will likely need to mesh closely with edits as they come in. I am
willing to offer $5,000 dollars Canadian (almost the same as American) for
a working solution that tags potential copyright issues in near real time
with a greater than 90% accuracy. It is to function on at least all medical
and pharmacology articles but I would not complain if it worked on all of
Wikipedia. The WMF is free to apply.

*COMMUNITY: supporting and mobilising volunteers and editors*
· Wiki-Saturdays.
The WMNL office was open for community members on June 7 and 21. The event
on the 7th was visited by 10 members. The first ideas for the year plan
2015 were collected by the 12 participants on the 21st. (see below)
*WORK: content, collaboration and activity development*
- Wiki Loves Earth events
In total, the Wiki Loves Earth competition resulted in 1349 images of Dutch
nature, wildlife and landscapes uploaded to Wikimedia Commons. The
Institute for Vision and Sounds donated 500 videos of Dutch birds (see
below under content donations for more info) and launched a competition to
integrate the films in the relevant Wikipedia-articles. We also met with
Naturalis, the museum of natural history, to discuss content donations and
an editathon, and are approaching volunteer organisations working on nature
and wildlife for future cooperation.
· Education Programme
WMNL has commissioned a small consultancy firm to carry out a study into
the feasibility of starting an education programme in the Netherlands. The
consultants did desk research and interviewed relevant stakeholders. In
their report, they conclude that there is definitely potential for an
education programme focussing on higher education (universities and
colleges. They recommended carrying out three pilotprojects, exploring
improving content of articles, translating articles from other language
versions of Wikipedia and improving language and style of articles. More
information can be found on the project page.
· World War Two
Volunteers working on the World War Two project made an inventory of topics
whose content could be expanded and improved. This will serve as a
framework for content donations by the National Institute for War Research
NIOD and the Institute for Vision and Sound. We also decided to approach
local history groups and museums. More information on the project page. And
we are also still looking for more volunteers to work on this activity!
· Wikipedia workshops at libraries
Two workshop were organised: a monthly open workshop in Amersfoort (June
13) and a workshop for 9 employees of the public library in Amsterdam (OBA,
June 24). The workshop in Amersfoort attracted people that specifically
came to the library for the workshop and the director of the archive (the
archive is located in the same building).
· Music Edit-a-thon
On Saturday June 14th an Edit-a-thon was organized at the Netherlands
Institute for Sound and Vision. About 30 people showed up to write about
Dutch music from the first half of the twentieth century. There were 15
first-time editors present. About twenty articles were written (see the
course page for all the contributions of the day). Photos of the day.
· Content donations
*The Netherlands Institute for Sound and Vision: 500+ videos of birds*
The Netherlands Institute for Sound and Vision has just finished uploading
over 500 video's of bird filmed in The Netherlands by a professional film
producer. This is a donation made possible by the Foundation for Nature
Footage (Stichting Natuurbeelden) and the Netherlands Institute for Sound
and Vision. The entire collection can be found in the category
commons:Category:Stichting_Natuurbeelden_on_Open_Images Stichting
Natuurbeelden on Open Images.
*Atlas of Mutual Heritage on Commons: 2.500 old maps, prints and drawings*
2500 images related to the overseas history of The Netherlands have been
uploaded to Wikimedia Commons by Hay Kranen. More information about this
upload can be found on the project page and in Hay's email to the GLAM
mailinglist.
· Re-source fashion conference
Sebastiaan ter Burg was a panellist at the Re-source fashion conference in
Arnhem.
*WMNL*
· Newsletter
The newsletter was published on June 30. 69 people signed up for the WMNL
newsletter, mainly as a result of the Wiki Loves Earth events.
· Linux-group meeting
Board members Ad Huikeshoven and Justus de Bruijn attended the annual
summer meeting of the Netherlands Linux Usersgroup. They presented WMNL and
explored possibilities for synergy and cooperation.
*GLOBAL*
· Free Culture Weekend
Sebastiaan ter Burg attended the Culture Weekend in London (notes).
· Wikimania Scholarships
WMNL provided Wikimania scholarships to 11 members of the Dutch Wikimedia
community. In addition, several staff and boardmembers will also attend the
event in London.
*GOVERNANCE*
· Board
The WMNL Board met on June 12.
· Annual plan 2015
We started drafting of the annual plan 2015 with a brainstorming meeting on
June 21, which was attended by 12 people. The process has now moved
on-wiki. Members of the Wikimedia community can provide input on the
WMNL-wiki.
*OTHER EVENTS*
These events are relevant to the Netherlands or Dutch language
Wikimedia-projects but were not organized/supported by WMNL:
· Brazil writing weeks. The Dutch Wikipedia community organised two
writing weeks (May 31 - June 15) about Brazil. Some [1] 260 articles were
written or improved.
· 2,228 photos of objects from the Rijksmuseum Japanese art
collection were uploaded to Commons with the GLAMwiki Toolset through the
kind help of Fae.

Hi,
I am Akshit (Co-Founder of Wibe), we have made a Chrome Extension by which
anyone will be able to watch relevant YouTube videos corresponding to the
Wiki Article they are reading.
It is the deadly combination of Wikipedia and YouTube, it can really become
a great new feature of Wikipedia. We developed it to solve our problem of
switching to YouTube from Wiki to understand a particular thing.
I would be very thankful if you guys please try and review it. Then if you
like Wibe, consider it to integrate as a functionality in Wikipedia for
some days so that user can use and review this new feature.
*Website*: http://www.letswibe.com
*Extension*: http://goo.gl/EiFG9t
*Demo Video*: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=98uDPo7ZjVI
Install the Extension and then try out "
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:About" page to see how it changes
the original wiki page by integrating relevant videos from YouTube.
Cheers,
Akshit Agarwal (Co-Founder, Wibe)

For the last month or so I want to share with you the initial success
of the Microgrants 2014 project of Wikimedia Serbia. However, there
are a number of stories and it was too much to me to write about all
of them at once. So, I am splitting it, which means that you can
expect more stories during the next days.
Inside of this email, first a bit about the project Microgrants, then
about the particular project.
* * *
In brief, the goals of WMRS Microgrants project is to build capacities
of Wikimedia Serbia and to make WMRS more visible. Projects themselves
are of secondary importance. The idea is to engage individuals and
organizations in creation free content, as well as to find active
volunteers inside of that pool.
Although there are many possible cool ideas, I didn't want to base the
project on something unpredictable, but on more or less predictable
parameters. For example, if we get ~10 more active Wikimedians thanks
to that project, it would be success.
However, it turns out that some of my wet dreams have become reality
:D My unexpressed idea was that if we reach relevant population, we'll
get some very cool projects.
The initial budget for all projects was 2500 EUR. Thanks to WMRS Board
and staff, that budget raised for, AFAIK, ~2000 EUR, so all relevant
projects got funding (which was between 400 and 500 per project).
* * *
This email is about the coolest project which we got. (However, there
are other projects, even more significant than this one. This one is
just the coolest :D ) It's about recording underwater world of Drina
River [1]. So, yes, we'll get photos and videos of underwater species.
Two persons who are doing that are called "Liquid Art" [2]. Please,
take a look at their materials.
One of very important conclusions about the work with them is that one
of my premises turns out to be true.
They are artists. They are living of making artistic movies about
underwater worlds. They needed just co-funding (500 EUR) and they will
give us all materials relevant to us, for educational purposes. They
will create movies, make other steps to compile them into artistic
experience, and that material is their, proprietary. However,
educational materials will be copylefted.
But, that's not the end of the story...
We were actually lucky to start this project with them. They are in
Serbia (in Novi Sad) just because their ship is docked in Caribbean to
be repaired. Oh, and they didn't want to go to make underwater photos
of Caribbean, but underwater photos and videos of the Southern Ocean,
Antarctica.
They have other materials, as well as they are making underwater
photos all over the world. Their destinations for the next year are
Thailand and Antarctica.
After they come back from their Drina expedition, we are going to talk
about liberating their older materials.
Basically, those people are living from their work, but they have
enough space to contribute to the free content corpus, as well as they
are willing to do so. And I am sure that there are many such people
all over the world.
* * *
Obviously, I'd like to see other affiliate organizations doing similar
things. At some point of time I'll write a know-how for making that
kind of projects. In the meantime, feel free to approach me via email
or ask the questions here, so everybody would be able to read and
participate.

[1] http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Drina
[2] https://liquid-art.net/ (some of their material is locked, as they
didn't publish those videos yet; narration of their movies is in
Serbian, but I am sure that we can convince them to make English
versions, as well :) )
An IRC-based office discussion will begin on VisualEditor in about half an
hour. James Forrester, the product manager, will be there to answer your
questions about VisualEditor.

requirements or the process for determining eligibility in this round. Of
the fifteen organizations submitting a Letter of Intent, three are already
considered eligible provided they continue to meet eligibility requirements
throughout the duration of the FDC process, one is not eligible to
participate in this round, and eleven could be considered eligible if all
eligibility gaps listed in this table are met by the 15 September 2014
deadline. During the next two months, the FDC staff will work with all
potential applicants to make sure eligibility requirements are clear and to
form plans together to meet these requirements. Once applicants are
confirmed by WMF staff as eligible, they must continue to meet these
requirements throughout the duration of the Annual Plan Grants / FDC
process.
Please expect another update once eligibility is finally confirmed on 15
September 2014, leading up to the 1 October 2014 proposal deadline.
