Since 2008 I wonder, why the logo of Wikimedia projects are under copyright? I
see it as something contradictory.

I thought this was interesting so I’m passing it along. This sentence particularly caught my attention: “The answer, I think, is to take the best of what both experts and markets have to offer, realizing that the combination of the two offers a better window onto the future than either alone.” Substitute the word “crowds” for “markets”, and perhaps there is something here that could be applied to Wikipedia in our quest for quality, mixing the best of expertise and crowdsourcing. I’d be very interested in hearing comments from other Wikipedians.

Hi all,
The second IRC office hours with the Foundation's editor engagement
experiments team will be on Saturday July 7th at 18:00 UTC. We've just
completed our first feature experiment on English Wikipedia, and others are
set for deployment in the next couple weeks, so there's lots to discuss!
As usual, docs about office hours are on Meta.[1] There is also material
documenting our experimental work there,[2] and on English Wikipedia at
WP:E3.
Talk to you then,

Hi Steven,
Could you explain the distinctions between
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Global_locks,
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Global_blocks, and
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Global_bans? These look to me like they have
some redundancy and some areas where they diverge. A chart which compares
these three side-by-side would be helpful.
Also, if Global Bans are decided by an RFC on Meta, that gives me pause. I
can envision sockpuppets and meatpuppets attempting to sabotage the process
and giving Meta checkusers more work to do, potentially much more work,
especially if WP:DUCK behaviors need to be evaluated on multiple projects in
multiple languages and/or coordination is needed with checkusers from
projects in other languages. I'm a bit more supportive of the process at
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Global_locks which seems to involve Stewards
making the decision to take a global action based on multiple local projects
taking local actions, rather than because there was a global community RFC
at Meta. I agree with AFBorchert's comment at the RFC, "Meta is working
great for non-controversial project coordination, requests to stewards etc.
But Meta is in no way prepared to serve as a battleground for a large-scale
global ban discussion which would tend to revive previous debates at other
projects."
Maybe I'm missing something here, but I'm thinking that global locks and
global blocks would be the best two of the three options to deal with a user
who is problematic enough to be unwelcome on all wikis.
Thanks,
Pine
Hi everyone,
This is a long email, so the less TL;DR version is: there is a request
for comment on Meta about a community policy for global bans.[1] This
is vitally important, and I hope you will both comment and help spread
the word in your community. The background on why we're doing this
follows...
One of the most important elements of the new Terms of Use,[2] at
least from my perspective, is the fact that it clearly and
unequivocally states that if you engage in harassment, threats,
stalking, or other kinds of behavior that harm other people you are
not welcome on any Wikimedia project.
The Terms state that we do not tolerate harassment etc., and on the
individual project level, I think we deal with that with a stunning
degree of effectiveness for a volunteer movement. However, there is an
area of weakness: someone banned or indefinitely blocked on multiple
projects can simply go to a new project and start up all over again,
even when a large number of community members from different projects
agree that this person poses a danger to others.
Now, the traditional way other big, participatory sites enforce these
kinds of requirements to simply hire a team of people to moderate
these requests. That's the way Facebook, YouTube, et. al. do it today.
While the ToU does say that the Foundation may have some prerogative
to remove people's access when required, we all know that in reality,
having the WMF handle any global banning requests by default is not in
line with our values. That's not us. The volunteer community is at the
core of our movement, and the Terms state this over and over again.
The lack of a policy and process for Wikimedians from different
communities to collectively agree that someone should be globally
banned allows bad actors to exploit our instinct to Assume Good Faith
in all situations, and use smaller projects as a safe harbor for
continuing to harass others. Even if the new Terms empower Wikimedia
overall to deal more strongly with harmful behavior, to do this in a
volunteer-led way, we need a global bans policy.
A framework for how to reach a consensus decision on global bans has
been put forth,[3] so we need to make a decision about whether it's
the right approach. The RFC has been translated into some of the most
important languages other than English, but anything you can do to
forward this on to the community you're a part of would be most
appreciated.
Thanks for reading,

P.S. On a personal note, I wanted to say that though I'm writing this
with my staff accout during working hours, this is not really a part
of my core job description now that I've joined Engineering and
Product Development. I've spent my time authoring this policy and
proposing it because I think it's really important, not merely because
I was assigned to do so.
P.P.S. If you'll be at Wikimania next week and want to talk about
this, please don't be shy. :)

Subject: Zedler Prize for Free Knowledge
To: Communications Committee <wmfcc-l(a)lists.wikimedia.org>
Hello everybody,
this past Sunday, 1 July, Wikimedia Deutschland awarded the first German
prize for free knowledge achievements. The award is called Zedler-Preis für
Freies Wissen (Zedler Prize for Free Knowledge). It's named after Johann
Heinrich Zedler and his 18th century encyclopedia[1], which was composed by
various anonymous authors. Sounds familiar, doesn't it?
The Zedler Prize was awarded in three categories: Wikipedia article of the
year, community project of the year, external project of the year. There
was an accompanying award show, hosted by our CEO Pavel Richter at a venue
in Berlin. The ceremony finished off the scientifc conference Wikipedia
Academy[2].
The award is about honoring extraordinary achievements in Wikipedia and
beyond. Including a category for external free knowledge projects
underlines Wikimedia Deutschland's vision of the awards: The Zedler Prize
is all about creating awareness for the volunteer efforts behind Wikipedia,
demonstrating two things: First, anybody can contribute to sharing free
knowledge, be it in Wikipedia or elsewhere. Secondly, amazing things may
result from making a first step.
We hope to build on this initial experience and establish the award.
Here are the winners, picked by three separate volunteer jurys (community,
journalists, researchers):
Wikipedia Article of the Year
http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nuklearkatastrophe_von_Fukushima
(English article:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fukushima_Daiichi_nuclear_disaster)
Community Project of the Year
http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Portal:%C3%96sterreich/Denkmallisten
(Portal devoted to listing and documenting every monument in Austria. Yes,
every monument! The group of volunteers was reached out to the Austrian
Federal Monuments Office[3] with their project. The collaboration
eventually led to an official representer of the office attending the award
show and thanking the Wikipedians for their fantastic work.)
External Project of the Year
http://de.vroniplag.wikia.com/wiki/Home
(Vroniplag is a Wikia-based open platform for detecting plagiarism in
scientific work. The project rose to prominence in 2011 when volunteers
proved the then-German Minister of Defence to have plagiarized most of his
PHD thesis.)
The Juries were free to award special recognition among the runners-up. All
in all there were 17 final nominees[4]. The winners of the special
recognitions are:
The Wikipedia article "Pizzakarton" (Pizza box)[5] and a user initiative
that expresses gratitude to other users for their hard Wikipedia work by
leaving a thank you note and image of a flower on talk pages. The latter is
called "The Flower of the Week"[6].
We counted an audience of approx. 150 people. WMDE released a press
statement in time with live twitter news about the winners. Press coverage
includes a German public radio broadcaster (national), regional and
national newspapers. There also was substantial Austrian coverage, due to
the Austrian Wikipedia portal winning. Short list in German:

Hi Jane,
I am happy that you think that it sounds interesting!
The idea is to have similar rules and structure as WLM, e.g. that the artworks should have a unique ID to be part of the contest. I think that we should not limit ourselves more right now until we know
what type of data we can get our hands on in the different countries.
I personally feel rather hesitant to create a specific definition for
the contest that would differ from the official ones, that feel a lot
like original research to me and also it could make it harder to use
the data later on, as we then might have to sort out certain categories of artworks. That however mean that what exactly are considered public art then most likely will differ a bit between different countries, and perhaps between different regions. To get in contact with relevant parties that have the needed data is therefor a first step and if you are interested in contacting people/institutions in your country that would be very helpful!
Also, I think that events focusing on connecting the pictures to Wikipedia would be fantastic and perhaps one could organize them to take place either at the same time or during the summer. If you have any cool ideas that you would like to work on please let me know!
All the best,
John

Subject: Re: [Wiki Loves Monuments] Wiki Loves Public Art (WLPA) needs your help
JohnGreat initiative! Thanks for the tip, and good point about May vs. September regarding WLM, but these can easily be linked together, meaning Wiki(p/m)edians can take pictures of statues and other public art whilst working from a list of monument numbers...
To be clear, are you going to keep your Public art idea like WLM's, in the sense that "only photos with a unique id taken during the competition month will be eligible for a prize"? WLM is basically just a Wikimedia Commons project, and the fruits of that project can be used by Wikipedia, but there is no Wikipedia part of the competition as it is today.
Right off the top of my head I can think of lots of other ways to track public art, such as historical artworks commissioned by a governing body that once were on Square X and were replaced by artwork Y for reason Z, etc. This kind of tracking would require various references and would need to be integrated somehow with Wikipedia, I think, as pictures alone don't tell the whole story, the way pictures of physical monuments taken for WLM do.
In other words, what is your precise, identifiable and verifiable definition of "public art", rather than "sculptures, mosaics, mural paintings, memorials and place specific installments in the public space"?
Jane
2012/7/2 John Andersson <johnandersson86(a)hotmail.com>
Hallo everybody,
We have just started working with the Wiki Loves Public Art (WLPA)[1]
contest that will focus on getting pictures on sculptures, mosaics,
mural paintings, memorials and place
specific installments in the public space. If
you are interested in public art, enjoy organizing events, think that it
is cool and interesting to work with projects that increase cooperation
between the Chapters, or would like to work towards GLAM in your
country, well then this would be something for you! We are looking for
all kinds of volunteers and especially for national coordinators that
can help us get things going in the countries and coordinate the
volunteer efforts!
As
we don't want to intrude upon the fantastic Wiki Loves Monument contest we are thinking about holding WLPA during the
month of May in 2013. However, May will hopefully give us enough time to work on this and provide good enough weather
so that the pictures look nice and people think that it is fun to go out
and find the art works.
We are of course aware of the tricky copyright legislations in
different countries but thanks to the fact that this is organized
together with Europeana (www.europeana.eu) we have the
possibility to use Europeana's team of judicial experts in finding out
answers on some of the questions. So if you have a question that is not
answered on Commons:Freedom of Panorama[2] please write up your
questions on relevant judicial matters on our list and we will forward
it to Europeana.[3]
Both me and the project leader, Lennart Guldbrandsson, will be at
Wikimania and we would love to met and talk to you about this in person!
I hope to hear from you soon!
All the best,
John
