I must have missed the announcement in the Signpost. I think of Signpost as an ENWP publication, not a Meta publication. Do we have an equivalent list of announcements for Meta somewhere? I would have at least expected to see something posted in https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Goings-on, and I don’t see a reason *not* to make a separate post to this list, given the importance of these changes for WMF and the interest of many subscribers of this list.
Thanks,
Pine
Hi folks,
I'm pleased to announced that the next WMF metrics and activities
meeting is going to be the first one that'll be live-streamed on
YouTube with an open IRC backchannel.
The meeting will take place November 1, 2012 at 5:30 PM UTC. The IRC
channel is #wikimedia-metrics-meetings [1] on irc.freenode.net.
The current structure of the meeting is:
* Review of key metrics including the monthly report card, but also
specialized reports and analytics
* Review of financials
* Welcoming recent hires
* Brief presentations on recent projects, with a focus on highest
priority initiatives
* Update and Q&A with the Executive Director, if available
Please review https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Metrics_and_activities_meetings
for further information about how to participate.
We'll post IRC logs and the video recording publicly after the meeting.
All best,
Erik
[1] I'm open to just using #wikimedia or another channel if folks
would prefer that, but didn't want to assume that it's OK to hog the
channel :)

In the meanwhile there are other drafts to review. ;-)

I have created a Wikivoyage section on that page and linked our draft policy
(using the full URL since we're still waiting on the interwiki prefix), but
I'm not a member of wikimedia-l at the moment. If anyone wants to drop a
note there I'd appreciate it.
Thanks for your help!
I appreciate the comprehensiveness of this report.
I have a few questions about the finance section. Some are more basic than
others.
Does WMF use the calendar year for its fiscal year?
Is the financial plan for WMF to run a YTD deficit until the annual
fundraiser?
Why were recruiting expenses higher for the July-August timeframe? I thought
that WMF eliminated a recruiting contractor recently, so I would have
expected recruiting expenses to be lower rather than higher.
Was August an unusually expensive month? If the total YTD expenses were
$5.2MM and August alone cost $2.6MM, I would be interested in knowing why
August was such an expensive month.
If in the July-August time period WMF "Completed our report to the Stanton
Foundation and received our second grant installment of $1.8 million", why
is there only $1.75 million of revenue shown in the table which includes
$1.0MM from the Sloan Foundation? These numbers don't seem to add up
correctly. I would have expected the revenue total to be at least $2.8MM
when including both of the grants.
Thanks,
Your finance and metrics enthusiast,
Pine

I appreciate the comments of Jan-Bart and DeltaQuad regarding process and
openness, although I feel that we're veering off topic a little from the
subject of COIs.
Since we're veering anyway, I would like to make a distinction between
providing openness and providing notice. To the best of my ability to see,
Sue's deliberations weren't announced here on Wikimedia-l by anyone from
WMF. I appreciate Sue having the discussion in the open, but I think the
notice to the community that these deliberations were happening was little
to none from what I can tell. Notice to Wikimedia-l and Research-l was
provided by me (not anyone from WMF) when I found the proposal's pages a
mere two days before Sue's stated wrap-up date of October 14. From my point
of view, the absence of notice to the community via this list was a
communications shortcoming that I feel is worrisome. I informed a staffer of
this on his talk page but he didn't acknowledge my comment, which further
heightens my concern about communications gaps, so if someone at WMF could
tell me to whom I should address my concern about these communications
issues, I would appreciate it.
Thanks,
Pine
Hi folks - I'm happy to report that there's been a beneficial turn of
events from the original announcement a few weeks ago. Apologies for the
delay in getting back you.
After some reflection and conversations I've decided to change course from
my original plans and stay on with the Foundation. I spent a lot of time
reviewing succession plans, looking at future communications projects, and
chatting with me team and realised that some awesome and important work was
still ahead of me.
You really only get one chance to work at an extraordinary place like the
Wikimedia Foundation. We impact millions of lives every day, and the tens
of thousands of people like you - our amazing volunteers - have high
expectations of us. I am energized by the opportunity to protect our
projects and move the platform forward. It's tough work, but it's
incredible to see how it all comes together.
I heard and read some really wonderful comments since Geoff sent out this
notice, and I want to thank everyone for your kind words. It definitely
helped me think about the work we've done together, and the incredible work
that's not yet done.
Looking forward to pressing ahead with you all.
Jay
