jHi all,
a reminder to chapters and volunteers around the world -- if you're
planning a hackathon, please let us know beforehand by adding it to
this page:
https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/MediaWiki_developer_meetings
Consistent with Sue's recommendations to the Board, Wikimedia
Foundation will spend less time organizing events on its own, and will
more frequently send smaller groups to events organized around the
world by the movement at large. But to do so we need to know what's
coming up. :)
Hackathons/DevCamps are a great way to help the movement. They can
engage the existing volunteer developer commmunity, help expand it,
bring together engineers with other Wikimedia practitioners, and
create a focused space. We hope more folks around the world will take
a role in hosting such developer events. If you would like WMF's
thoughts and input, please feel free to ping Sumana (sumanah at
wikimedia.org).
All the best,
Erik

Hello,
Somewhere, there came up the question about how many offices of
Wikimedia organizations there are. I have recently updated Wikimedia
Commons categories on Wikimedia Nederland, and now I found
http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_offices
It would be really useful to have more information of this kind, to
have a better picture of the movement. Could you have a look at that
page and update it?
Kind regards
Ziko

Found this site recently: http://augmentwikipedia.org/
It allows uploading 3D models about the subjects of wikipedia articles, and
one can get a 3D, augmented-reality view of the models with a smartphone
(when accessing Wikipedia through some special app, presumably? The site is
not clear about that.)
This seems very useful for a number of things (molecules, buildings, 3D
animations etc) and a good way to connect Wikipedia with the "free
modeling" movement which has been picking up steam recently, with 3D
printing getting cheaper and with the free software ecosystem aroung 3D
animation getting more and more evolved.
Should Wikipedia try to support this (or, 3D models in general)? If so,
what is needed? If I understand it correctly, the main reason they had to
create a separate site is that 3D models are not allowed on Commons; that
would be easy to fix.
Re: http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Chapters_Association/Resolutions/P…
Dear Wikimedians and Chapter enthusiasts,
This weekend I am planning to put forward the above drafted resolution
for the WCA Council on the location for legal registration. (Closing
date Sunday 11 November as voting opens on Monday.)
There have been only a few proposals discussed for location, and I and
the other Council Members would welcome wider engagement on proposed
locations. Please see the above resolution page and its discussion
page for more information.
If you are disappointed not to see a location you think would be
ideal, please raise a question on the resolution talk page on the
:meta wiki, or directly approach and discuss the proposal with a
Council Member (see the list at
<http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Chapters_Association/Membership>)
as locations should be "sponsored" by at least one Council Member;
they do not have to be part of the chapter in the location country.
There is not much time to add a proposal, however the process is
relatively simple:
1. Ensure one or more Council Members will "sponsor" the location.
2. Address the questions listed for locations in the resolution in a
page on :meta with some simple answers.
If you are having trouble contacting a friendly Council Member, please
contact me personally and I'll try to help out.
If you would like to review the proposals for locations and raise
questions or suggest improvements, that would be great too. :-)
Cheers,
Fae

Hi all,
I've put the Board Govenance Committe's agenda for the next months on
http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/WMF_Board_Governance_Committee and would be
glad to see you joining discussions there and on the subpages which will be
created with the tasks we start.
There is one thing with some special urgency: we need to find a new board
member to fill one of the appointed seats. That's not easy and we will
reach out to the Advisory Committee, the community and externals to collect
nominations. But what needs to be first is to create a set of requirements,
skills and characteristics the Board needs. With the appointed Trustees the
Board has the opportunity to identify which of these are necessary in the
current composition to amend the Board's skills at a certain stage. Can we
find ways to get more overlapping in what is needed and what is wanted? I
Think in general it's important to find out more about expectations and
ideas of an "ideal Trustee". Help us get a broader picture, share your
thoughts on
http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/WMF_Board_Governance_Committee/Agenda_2012-2…
Regards, Alice.

The purpose of functional groupings is to ensure that there is
coordination and communication among people who share a function (e.g.
all designers), and that they have management support, ideally from
someone who understands their function and purpose in the
organization, and is able to help them grow in their career and as an
individual contributor. It creates escalation points in case of
conflicts, and can help to remove blockers.
The purpose of team groupings is to ensure that a team is assembled
cross-functionally, from all the required skills, and fully focused on
delivering its objectives.
The two organizational models are complementary; the singular focus on
one or the other tends to lead to silos. Achieving a healthy balance
between intra-functional team development and growth and
cross-functional delivery is one of the key challenges of management.
