It will be a lot easier to import from YouTube once Timed media handler adds support for webm to commons. If you check out the wikivideo-l and commons lists for some recent example YouTube to commons scripts. I know this is not super useful info right this second, but there is hope on the horizon.

Subject: [Foundation-l] Tragedy: videos and slides from presentations Wikimanias (lately 2011 in Haifa)
Date: Sat, Sep 3, 2011 2:40 pm
Hi,
As I said before - all Wikimania sessions had been recorded (in HD format!).
As everyone who work with video know, to produce 120 hours of HD videos, is
not an easy thing at all.
We had to finish a lot of administrative work which related to Wikimania,
and we just back to take care for this issue - to edit, decode and upload.
Videos are already on their way online to Youtube and we hope to upload all
of them until the end of the month. After we will finish that, we will need
to find more time again to decode them and compress them so we can upload to
Commons (every decode file who been uploads right now to youtube is about
3-4GB).
All the footage are backup on two hard drive, one that belong to Wikimedia
Israel and one which will be sent to WMF for archive. So we have all the
data, and it is only matter of time. Be patients please.

This is wonderful Lodewijk. Seriously great work from everybody: it's
impressive. And it's a good quote from you :-)
(Also, I am testing the reply auto-forward to foundation-l, which has
never yet worked for me the way I understood it wanted to work.
Historically, I've made several unsuccessful attempts to reply to
announce-l, which only you have seen, because you are its moderator.
So worst case scenario, at least you will see this note :-)
Thanks,
Sue

Dear All,
I am delighted to announce that the Polish Wikipedia community,
supported by Wikimedia Polska, is going to celebrate the 10th
anniversary of the project (founded on September 26, 2001) with a
conference to be held on September 24-25, in Poznan, Poland.
We will start with a great exhibition of the winning POTY (Picture of
the Year) pictures which will be showcased for two weeks, starting
next Saturday, September 12, in one of the most prestigious shopping
and art centres in Poland, the [[Stary Browar]]. 16 pictures, best of
the best of the Wikimedia movement, will be shown on an exhibition
open for the public, with descriptions in Polish, English and German.
The conference itself is not going to be any worse; we're going to
have about 15 presentations and talks about Wikipedia, discussing the
place of Wikipedia in court judgements, Wikipedia's role as a source
of information, the now-hot topic of women in Wikipedia community and
many, many more. There will be a public screening of the documentary
film "Truth in Numbers?" about Wikipedia; there will also be cookies,
balloons, talks into the wee hours, and finally, a massive Wikipedia
birthday cake!
We're going to meet in the very heart of the very best location there
is in Poznan; the conference will be open for the public, as we want
to involve people from outside the Wikimedia movement. All talks will
be streamed live on a special Internet radio and after the conference,
all talks, audio and video, will be released under the CC-BY-SA 3.0
licence and made available on-line.
For a quick look at the conference, please visit the website
<http://10lat.wikipedia.pl>. If you have any questions, feel free to
approach the organising team at <10urodziny(a)wikimedia.pl>; we're also
there for you on the #wikimedia-pl IRC channel on Freenode.
On behalf of the organising team,

The Brazilian community is offering WMF a letter of agreement, which was
collaboratively written.
After the Brazilian participants shared their experience on what
happened in Haifa, the whole community had one week to discuss and edit
the content, which is now available on Meta.[1]

Proposed letter of agreement between Wikimedia Foundation and
Brazilian volunteers
On August 5, 2011, during Wikimania 2011
<http://br.wikimedia.org/wiki/Brasil_no_Wikimania/2011>, on Haifa,
Israel, a meeting between Wikimedia Brasil and Wikimedia Foundation was
held. The meeting, which was also attended by representatives of
Wikimedia Portugal and Wikimedia Argentina, provided a discussion about
the ongoing Wikimedia Projects in Brazil and the interaction between the
future WMF office in the country and the local chapter.
The understanding of Brazilian members along the meeting was that:
1. Brazil is a strategic priority for Wikimedia Foundation.
2. Wikimedia Foundation will set up an office in Brazil in order to
stimulate the development of projects to increase the penetration of
Wikipedia in Brazil. This process was already launched with the
search for locations, hiring lawyers and the search for a
professional to manage it.
3. Wikimedia Foundation understands that the Brazilian community and,
thus, the chapter under formation still doesn't have the capacity to
be completely self-managed.
4. Wikimedia Foundation aims to develop the existing programs in
Brazil, like "Campus Ambassadors", though it still doesn't have a
specific development program for Brazil.
5. Wikimedia Foundation wants to conduct researches about the lusophone
community.
6. Wikimedia Foundation already has liaisons with Brazilian
organizations, like /"Positivo"/.
7. The members of the Brazilian community want to colaborate with
Wikimedia Foundation.
8. The members of the legal chapter under formation are afraid of
losing the legitimacy of the local community among society after the
establishment of the WMF office. Wikimedia Brasil has apprehension
of not having control over what was raised locally, and of the loss
of sources of revenue due to internal competition.
Based on this understanding, participant members of the Brazilian
community decided to:
1. Support the creation of Wikimedia Foundation office in Brazil which,
as explained at the meeting, will have the goal of fostering the
realization of partnerships and events with the community and the
external audiences, provisionally and until the local chapter have
enough structure to develop such activities directly.
2. Suggest that the office maintains goals to work for the development
of the local community and not only fundraising or the realization
of business agreements.
3. Recommend to Wikimedia Foundation that its activites in Brazil are
achieved with maximum transparency and envolvement of Wikimedia
Brasil, allowing the local volunteers to participate at the various
stages of ongoing projects and also in those that will be launched
at the country.
4. Recommend to Wikimedia Foundation that its goals and existing plans
to Brazil are shared with Wikimedia Brasil.
5. Recommend to Wikimedia Foundation to orientate its projects,
partnerships and possible proposals of interested sponsors to the
local chapter, giving some opportunity to Wikimedia Brasil.
6. Propose the creation of a tatical planning for Brazil, based on
Wikimedia's strategic planning, with the participation of WMF office
and Wikimedia Brasil for the construction of a development program
to Brazil.
7. Propose to Wikimedia Foundation to make room available in its WMF
office directorship, provided by statue, for a chosen Wikimedia
Brasil representative, consequently, chosen by the local community.
Or, that the Wikimedia Foundation enjoy the legal chapter structure
of Wikimedia Brasil to seek its goals; We want to offer the position
of one director on our legal chapter, provided by statue, to
Wikimedia Foundation.
8. Assist the establishment of the office with the volunteer
participation of Wikimedia Brasil in activities of organization and
achievement of knowledge inherent to local peculiarities, such as:
contracting services, choice of location and understanding of the
legislation.
9. Assist in the construction of a portfolio of activities and in the
resources search to achieve the same.
10. Suggest to Wikimedia Foundation to stimulate the existing activites
of Wikimedia Brasil and possibly the model of /"Mutirões"/.

*Wikimedians team up to make European Cultural Heritage Accessible to the
World *
*Volunteers from 16 European Countries Have Uploaded 15,000 Images and
Counting*
Amsterdam, September 6, 2011--- Wikimedians from 16 European countries
announced the first-ever Pan-European Wiki Loves Monuments contest, a
photography contest, running throughout the month of September, focused on
capturing and sharing images of important monuments and buildings in Europe.
Since its September 1st launch, more than 1000 images have been uploaded
from a few of the most active countries: France, Germany, the Netherlands,
Poland and Spain.
Europe has hundreds of thousands of historically and culturally significant
monuments and buildings, most of which still have no freely-available images
on the Internet. These important structures are often damaged or destroyed
overtime, endangering the opportunity for people all over the world to
access and learn about them. Although some prominent cultural artifacts are
protected and documented by various international organizations and
agencies, a majority of them are not. Wikipedia is one of the only
freely-accessible shared places on the Internet offering a digital home to
these artifacts, however, most of the culturally significant buildings and
monuments in Europe are missing. This contest aims to make sure that they
are represented in the form of images so that everyone, European or not, has
access to Europe's cultural heritage.
“Wikimeda’s ultimate goal is to make all information freely available to
everyone in the world, and images of Europe’s important cultural structures
are needed to complete this mission. All over Europe, important monuments
are tucked away from the rest of the world--they haven't been documented or
shared on a website like Wikipedia," said Lodewijk Gelauff, one of the lead
organizers of the European contest. "There are hundreds of thousands of
monuments that people walk past every day and they have no idea these
structures are culturally significant and should be shared."
The contest is inspired by the successful 2010 pilot contest conducted in
the Netherlands, which resulted in 12,500 freely-licensed images of
monuments and buildings now freely-available to be used on Wikipedia and by
anybody in the world. Wiki Loves Monuments runs throughout the entire month
of September and is organized in independent national contests. Winning
images from regional contests will then be submitted to the pan-European
Jury. Participating partner countries include: Andorra, Austria, Belgium,
Denmark, Estonia, France, Germany, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Poland,
Portugal, Romania, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland.
The contest is supported by international organizations including the
Council of Europe, the European Commission, Europeana and Europa Nostra. The
month of September was selected as it coincides with European Heritage Days
organized throughout Europe. Prizes, including a full scholarship to
Wikimania in Washington, DC, will be awarded to winners medio December. More
information about the contest and how to enter can be found at:
www.wikilovesmonuments.eu
“Europe's cultural artifacts have universal significance. And it’s not just
about the documentation of these artifacts, it's about making sure they’re
accessible to people no matter who you are or where you live in the world,”
says Gelauff.

About Wikimedia
Wikimedia is the movement behind Wikipedia, supporting the same goals on
realizing a world where all knowledge is freely available for every human
being. This is possible through the US-based Wikimedia Foundation and a
network of national associations which co-operate closely with the
volunteers on the Wikimedia projects, such as Wikipedia.
About Wikipedia
Wikipedia and the other projects operated by the Wikimedia Foundation
receive more than 390 million unique visitors per month, making them the 5th
most popular web property world-wide (July 2011). Available in more than 270
languages, Wikipedia contains more than 18 million articles contributed by
hundreds of thousands of people all over the world.
=== Q & A ===
*How are Wikimedia and the European Partners working together on this?*
Wiki Loves Monuments is lucky to be supported by a wide contingent of
European organizations - including the Council of Europe, the European
Commission, Europeana and Europa Nostra.
These organizations support Wikimedia through their extensive networks with
their national partner organizations and through their communications. Some
partners such as Europeana provide besides that also direct support by
making awards available.
*When will you announce the regional winners*
The regional winners will be announced by their national organizations by
the end of October or the beginning of November. They will submit their
nominations for the European jury by October 31.
*When will you announce the final winners*
The European jury will deliberate in November about the nominees by the
national juries and decide which photo will win the fully funded trip to
Wikimania in Washington DC in 2012. The winners will be announced at the
DISH conference in Rotterdam on 6-9 December.
*How can I track the images being submitted?*
All eligible images submitted are available through Wikimedia Commons:
http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Images_from_Wiki_Loves_Monuments…
You can always see the last few submissions on the main page of
www.wikilovesmonuments.eu .
yes! and the rating of articles would then allow to drop all other quality
gates in place ....

Here is WMF's mission statement:
"The mission of the Wikimedia Foundation is to empower and engage people
around the world to collect and develop educational content under a free
license or in the public domain, and to disseminate it effectively and
globally.
In collaboration with a network of chapters, the Foundation provides the
essential infrastructure and an organizational framework for the support and
development of multilingual wiki projects and other endeavors which serve
this mission. The Foundation will make and keep useful information from its
projects available on the Internet free of charge, in perpetuity."
Here is the vision statement:
"Imagine a world in which every single human being can freely share in the
sum of all knowledge. That's our commitment. "
Just thought I'd remind people of the actual Foundation mission and vision,
since technically Wikipedia itself does not have a mission statement (and
perhaps someone will correct me if I'm wrong). Wikipedia however does have
the purpose to be the world's largest free encyclopedia.
Commons also only
> hosts actual free (as in speech) images. Because -hey- that's
their mission.

As I have always understood it Commons scope is: "Wikimedia Commons is a
media file repository making available public domain and freely-licensed
educational media content to all. It acts as a common repository for the
various projects of the Wikimedia Foundation."
However, I am beginning to think that Commons might have to change it's
scope since "educational media" has evolved to encompass what everyone
believes is every free image on earth.
