Forum Building Digital Commons and Collaborative Communities
29th - 30th October 2011, Barcelona, Catalonia & Online *
http://www.digital-commons.net* <http://www.digital-commons.net/>
Building Digital Commons and Collaborative Communities is a new initiative
aiming to bring together individuals, collective and organizations from
different Free and Open Collaborative Communities, Digital Commons
Initiatives and Researchers in the area to identify ways to support and
learn from each other and collaborate in order to promote together digital
commons.
Why?
The new technologies offered a big opportunity to create, innovate and
collaborate to share and build information and knowledge resources. However,
we are living challenging times, with an ongoing growth of the enclosure of
the commons.
i) We want to promote the “makers” and “ doers” approach: To increase the
visibility of the initiatives that are based on building digital commons.
ii) Systematize experiences & learn from each other (at the legal,
infrastructural, sustainable, participation and governance levels).
ii) Map the digital public spaces and promote common actions
iv) Create public procommons references: To underline the distinction
between the governance of digital commons and other forms of
corporate-providers not based on free and open infrastructure.
v) Build bridges between action and research on commons as a form of
governance, production and horizon for social transformation.
What?
We will address collaboratively and critically a series of working lines:
1. Participation and engagement in communities
2. Sustainability formulas and dialogue between social digital economy and
cooperativism
3. Mapping a variety of digital commons initiatives and to define a common
strategy
A "How to manual on digital commons: participation engagement,
sustainability formulas and over all digital commons networking" and a
"Digital commons alliance/network" will be the resulting outcomes of the
event.

i col·laborar en l'intercanvi i creació de recursos d'informació i
coneixements.
-
Sistematitzar les experiències i aprendre mútuament (a nivell legal,
d'infraestructura, sostenible, de participació i d'auto-govern).
-
Traçar un plànol del procomú digital i promoure accions comunes.
-
entre la infraestructura online lliure i oberta i sota governança comuna i
altres formes de provisió d'infraestructura online corporativa.
-
-
Participació en comunitats
-
Sostenibilitat: Dialogue entre la economia social digital i noves formes
de cooperativisme
-
*Quan i on?*
29 i 30 d'octubre de 2011 presencialment a Barcelona (CCCB - Montalegre, 5 –

I'm sure those on this list are familiar with the de.wikipedia poll on the
proposed image filter with its strong outcome on a particular side of the
debate. I am quite concerned about the precedent that it.wikipedia is being
allowed to set. Should I expect that de.wikipedia would be allowed to stage
a similar "blackout" should the image filter be implemented against their
wishes, with the goal of protesting perceived or potential censorship?
Dear all,
Here is our activity report for September 2011.
== IDF Spokesperson releases images under CC-BY-SA license ==
The spokesperson unit of the Israel Defense Forces began publishing its
photographs online (on its Flickr account) under a free Creative Commons
license. This move follows a long and protracted process of legislation
promoted by WMIL in discussions in the Science and Technology Committee of
the Knesset, the Israeli parliament. While legislation meant to free any
work created by the Israeli government of copyright has not yet been
accepted, the move by the IDF is certainly motivated by it. Hundreds of IDF
Spokesperson images are now in use on Wikimedia projects. WMIL released a
widely circulated press release condoning the move by the IDF spokesperson.

== Wikimedian-in-Residence in Israel Museum, Jerusalem ==
On September 18th, Yair Talmor became the first ever Wikimedian-in-Residence
in the Israel Museum and in Israel in general. Talmor, an art teacher with
academic background in art, will be employed for a two months period at the
museum, concentrating on tutoring museum staff on wiki editing, organizing
events of public outreach such as editathons and backstage tours, uploading
material from the museum's library and enhancing Wikipedia articles about
prominent Israeli artists. His employment is funded in part by WMIL.
While the focus of the project is in Hebrew, there's also some work on
material in English.

== Haifa University Faculty of the Humanities ==
On September 22nd, a large meeting was held at Haifa University between
members of staff from the Faculty of the Humanities and volunteers from
Wikimedia Israel. This was a preparatory session for a large-scale project
in which students in various courses will write Wikipedia articles as part
of their academic assignments.
== Training of Haifa Linux club ==
On September 12th, Tomer Ashur gave a hands-on training session on Wikipedia
editing to members of Haifa Linux club (Haifux). Eight people took part and
five articles were written during the training session.
== Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs ==
WMIL representatives met with a Deputy Director of the Israeli Ministry of
Foreign Affairs. They are very interested in releasing some of their
material under free licenses and in receiving further training from WMIL
about Wikipedia editing. A training session is planned for October 5th.
== Israeli Ministry of Education ==
Tomer Ashur, Deror Lin and Amir Aharoni met with the people responsible for
Internet ethics and safety education in the Ministry of Education to start
planning one-time experimental classes for elementary school pupils that
will teach them to understand Wikipedia's background, to read it correctly
and to understand the right conduct on talk pages. The lessons are scheduled
for November and chapter members are preparing the detailed lesson plans.
== Photoshooting excursion in Haifa ==
As part of the "Elef Milim" project about 20 Wikimedians took part in an
educational excursion in Haifa.

== Thank-you event for Wikimania volunteers ==
A thank-you picnic was held for the many volunteers that helped us make
Wikimania 2011 succssful. The event was attended by about 50 volunteers.
== Board Meeting ==
The WMIL board met on September 13th in Ramat Gan. The Board approved and
signed the Chapter's Agreement with the Foundation and decided to raise a
few more questions about the Grants Agreement. The Board also approved the
2012 workplan with a couple of minor items on the plan reserved for future
discussion. The workplan will be posted shortly on Meta.
Sincerely,
Harel Cain
Secretary, Wikimedia Israel

Where would I go for a feature request for Wikimedia websites? I'm
interested in a cross-wiki watchlist-- a watchlist that combines the
watchlists from all my globally linked accounts.

Thanks for the reply. I'm aware that the sidebar links can be changed,
it just seems a little disappointing that, of all the pages available,
the Wikipedia one was chosen by default globally.

One of the side points about the recent image filter survey* was a
discussion of the idea of a "switch" for readers to turn ALL multimedia off
- primarily to reduce the bandwidth required to load a page if you want to.
Then, by chance, I was reading a WP article on my phone this weekend and
noted that there is now a link at the bottom of the mobile gateway
http://en.m.wikipedia.org/ that says "Disable images on mobile
site<http://en.m.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Main_Page&useformat=mobile&disa…>"
(and the inverse, "enable images on the mobile site", is shown if you click
it).
Is that a new feature or was it always there and I just didn't notice it?
If it's a new feature, was it enabled as a result these recent discussions
or was it just by chance?
Is there any stats (or plans to collect stats) on how many people chose this
option and what kind of mobile device they are browsing from?
Since the "disable images" function is already working, would it be useful
to trial a subtle link to that function on the normal (non-mobile) site for
a couple of weeks? Place it right down the bottom next to the tiny "privacy
policy, about, disclaimers, mobile view" links? This would not be intrusive
and we could see, through this most-subtle of links, whether anyone takes us
up on the offer. If we find that more people click on the feature than
expected then that would potentially justify making the feature more
prominent (either in the toolbox, integrated into the "filter" software, as
a user-preference etc.)?
Just a suggestion.

* Yes, it was a survey not a referendum. A referendum is where, according to
our favourite website "...an entire electorate is asked to either accept or
reject a particular proposal." Personally I'm generally in favour of the
proposed personal image-hiding concept but please let's stop calling it a
referendum.

Greetings all,
I've noticed that the "Donate" link in all English Wikimedia projects' sidebars
goes to the following page:
http://wikimediafoundation.org/wiki/Donate
This is a fine landing page for Wikipedia readers, but if someone from
Wikibooks,
Wiktionary, etc, sees this, he could become confused where donations will go to,
because there is no mention of the local project, or even the
Wikimedia Foundation (!).
I understand that Wikipedia is the WMF's most popular and successful project,
and should be publicised the most in fundraising. But this current
approach is not fair to
sister projects, many of which are struggling to develop their own identity from
the encyclopedia.
I'd like to suggest that each sister project have its own dedicated
donation page,
with an explanation that donations will go to the Foundation, which
also runs Wikipedia,
etc. That isn't explained in the current appeal.
Best regards,
-Tempodivalse
