The Library of Alexandria (and Moushira and Abdel Rahman in particular)
helped organize and host an Arabic Wikipedia day yesterday... if I read
correctly, people contributed roughly 685 new articles in a day, and 4200
this month (increasing the project size by almost 1% in a day! and 6% this
month). I looked at a selection from today, and nothing seemed scripted,
/many/ contributors added new articles, including a number of anons. And
it's good to see that the obligations imposed by the heavier volume is being
taken seriously:

I think Khaled Hosny and EGLUG in Cairo helped put on their own Wikipedia
day(s?) earlier in August. There was certainly discussion of
Arabic-language editing drives at Wikimania in Alexandria, but it's pretty
awesome to see it taking place -- barnraisings are a good spectator sport
(and motivation to practice a new language :-). Congrats to everyone
involved, browsing the results made my night.

the sitenotice when browsing ar:wp for something quite different...)
I posted a proposition regarding the Wikimedia Mouvement here:
http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Talk:Www.wikimedia.org_template
The general idea is to create a website which would report on our global
mouvement. Main benefits would be
* to present ourselves as a loose but nevertheless coordinated body of
some sort (public face)
* share practices and experiences between chapters and wmf
Situation right now is not satisfactory and I believe it likely to
create either more tension or more separation in the future. Generally,
information regarding wikimedia mouvement is hosted on
* internalwiki (private wiki shared between some chapters members and wmf),
* on meta (access to information is very confusing since it is mostly a
work-wiki and a wiki shared by many),
* on Foundationwiki (eg
http://wikimediafoundation.org/wiki/Press_room/Media_Contact_2008)
* on each association website (eg http://wikimedia.de/)
Can we discuss that ? If you are supportive, please mention it on the
wiki page
Thanks
Ant

Just a question (srry this is not strictly foundation related, but
it's the only true meta lsit I've found)
Has anyone worked on an extension for timelines like the ones on the
simile project? Was anyone aware of that project?
Example:
http://matmor.unam.mx/~drini/timelines.php
They're much more appealing than the ones we currently use. Code is
BSD licensed and I've linked a JSON data file on the example.
Many more examples on the homepage:

I know I know "what about those using lynx"!!!
Yet we have embedded video and sound players, we use foldable divs
tricks, etc, use an ajax search box etc.
A similar interesting one and with a great potential is also the Timeplot one.
Good idea? Bad idea?
Lets try this one last time. :)
On behalf of the UK community I would like to thank the support and patience
from the board and foundation with regards to the UK community being successful
in forming a working chapter. I believe that the chapter's member base is stronger
now than it has ever been before. We all hope to learn from the mistakes and
challenges from the previous incarnation, and that we can build upon the successes
they had.
The UK is one of the largest contributors to the Wikimedia projects and we hope
that the chapter can better that in its accomplishments in representing the Foundation
with in the United Kingdom. We will ensure that we work closely and communicate with
the the Chapters committee, the Foundation office and board and also our sibling chapters
across the globe.
We will hopefully receive pro bono legal advice from within the UK and we will ensure that
the board is in the best position possible, but if the foundation has any advice to offer, we
would welcome it. Milestones have been set in place to ensure that the momentum we
have to kept going. It is hoped that incorporation, a bank account, and tax exemption could
be achieved within 6 months if all goes well. We look forward to working with you in the near
future, and even more so to our success.
Many thanks again from the UK

Note that the deadline for short list of potential candidates for
expert seats is September 15th. This means that we (NomCom) will have
to start to work on long list at Monday. So, if you are willing to
propose a member for one of four expert seats, please do it now by
sending to me or to any other NomCom member [1] a private email.

Dear wikimedians from around the world,
We're pleased to share with you that there is already a group of more than
45 wikimedians discussing and supporting the creation of a local chapter of
the Wikimedia Foundation in Brazil.
(You'll find more details at the following page:
http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Brasil) Please join and share with
us all your comments and advices)
In November of this year we'll have the opportunity to welcome Jimmy Wales
in São Paulo (he is a keynote speaker of a business conference) and a group
of volunteers is deeply committed to establish the local chapter beforehand.
They are working hard to follow all the steps recommended by the Chapters
Committee.
(You'll find both the Portuguese and the English version of the bylaws here:
http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Brasil/Bylaws)
The Wikimedia Foundation's staff, particularly Jay Walsh, Kul Wadhwa and
Delphine Menard, is also helping a lot with the press, business and
chapter's strategies for the establishment of the organization in Brazil.
*We are sincerely thankful for all the support and we welcome everybody
receiving this message to join the discussion and to help launch the
Brazilian Chapter.*
Looking forward hearing from you

It would appear that the company is facing bankruptcy and has been having problems with the authorities. Does she have the authority to dissolve it?

Alison Wheeler announced today the impending dissolution of Wiki Educational
Resources Ltd (Wikimedia UK). It isn't clear from her message why she
determined to fold it instead of pass on leadership to those interested. [1]
All other considerations aside, the Wikimedia community owes Alison and the
other members of the WMUK board of directors a debt of thanks for their
efforts over the last two years. More than anything else, its clear that
creating and managing a charity as a volunteer in the United Kingdom is a
difficult undertaking.

Does anyone know where old database dumps are kept? (all revisions
preferable). I asked in #wikimedia-tech but was told that that
Wikimedia does not keep that kind of thing.
Anyone have any ideas? It's for a project to develop a new grammar
checker that needs to see how articles are created and deleted over
time - thus just the old revisions wouldn't work.
I thought this quote was a good one, and would be an acceptable solution.

stuff on ftp, and let the rest of the world mirror it ;)"
